Will the Rockets ever start Jones at the 4?

Post#1 » by B_BallReasons » Sun Feb 22, 2015 7:34 am

Checked out the game today and Terrence Jones looked great out there. I think he is someone that would benefit from getting starter minutes. Play Montajiunas at the 5 with Jones at the 4. Josh Smith seems to have accepted his bench role and he could be in there along with Dorsey at the 4 & 5, which frees up space for guys like McDaniels, Brewer. The Rockets look really good out there without Howard. Perhaps they can trade him for the point guard they've been looking for.

once he's 100% healthy he's gonna have to earn the starting spot since dmo is playing well enough to keep it. dmo's isnt strong enough to paly center for the whole game, no one is other than dorsey. though i dont mind it at all since we need to win games to stay out of the lower seeds. if smith can keep up his momentum then he should start at pf and dmo or jones at center depending on matchups.

dorsey starting is a good strategy for a few reasons. he's an expendable player who can give a shot or two to the opposing team's main big man to set the tone defensively. he can also take those early fouls because he'll almost always be below 20 mpg, his main use is for defensive purposes and the little things like defensive rebounding. he also gets a few guaranteed dunks due to our penetration and peoples perception that he's not an offensive player.

dmo and jones can start in situations where they match up better to their counterparts. i think mchale sees this and is why we frequently see lineups of dmo-jones, dmo-smith, and smith-jones, in order to see how each of them play with the other teammate.

We started seeing the DMO/Jones pairing and I think that lends to more success that Dorsey.

Eventually I think Motie goes back to the bench backing Howard/Jones.

I prefer Motiejunas as the starter, but I support whatever is best for the team.

I don't thnk that playing Motiejunas out of position at the 5 is a good idea.

Next year is a contract year for both Jones and Motie. So it will definitely be an intense competition and whomever starts will have the advantage of staying. I don't see Daryl signing both of them to big contracts in 2016. They will be RFA's and sure to get other offers that require matching.

c - howard/dmo
pf - tjones/jsmoove

DMo gives us more spacing and Jones gives more inside presence and rebounding. They should be used depending on what the other team throws at us. They're like a broke mans Scola/Landry.

we should just play our best 5 players on the court for that game and force other to match
so if our best 5 players for the game is harden, brewer, tjones, dmo, jsmoove we just go with that

Not really true. Motie is shooting .318 from 3pt and Jones is shooting .308. Not much of a difference.

I believe the Rockets should put their strongest 5 man unit on the floor and that's: Bev, Harden, Ariza, Jones and Howard. Motie can play small ball 5 and back up Jones once Terrence has his legs back. We're already seeing him become a more impactful player as he regains his health.

I guess McMorey does read the forums :wizard:

Unless we're playing Memphis, there's really no reason not to start DMo and TJones together while Howard is out.

D-Mo won't be happy being demoted for no reason. I hope we don't have another Asik situation.

DMOs offense fits really well at the 5. It's his defense that's the problem. He's still too weak to defend most centers. When Howard gets back, I'm not opposed to having DMO play back up 5, since most teams don't have a good starting center, let alone a back up center. He should get plenty of minutes too, since Howard needs to take it easy from now on (25-30min), especially since we play so well without him anyways.

Next season depends on Josh Smith. If he's coming back, (which I think is unlikely) then we need to trade Jones or DMO. However, if Smith leaves, we start Jones, but stagger his break with Howard so DMO comes in at back up 4/5.

he became starter because tjones got injured
if he wants to keep the starter spot
he needs to play better than tjones

point is he hasn't done anything negative to be sent to the bench
maybe Howard should be the one coming off the bench SuperSixthMan
