Is Isaiah Thomas any good?
Hi guys.
Some C's fans are confused as to why we signed Thomas. Good value contract but we've got Smart and Bradley (who primarily defensive guards at the moment).
Do you think he'll be a good fit as starting point guard on a rebuilding team? I'm reading a lot of negativity about his ball hogging and lack of assists for a PG.
We do need a PG to teach Marcus Smart how to run the pick and roll but I'm worried we just signed Captain Mediocrity.
Will he get us more wins or just empty, efficient stats?
And how would you rate his defense? I know he's a tough, gritty defender, but when you're 5'9" your hustle can only get you so far vs 6'3+ guards.
Appreciate the input.

One day Marcus Smart will be defensive player of the year, mark my words.

I don't really know if he's good or not. I didn't like him here in Phoenix but I don't think this team was the right fit. He is a bad defender but that's to be expected, he can score...he's good when he has the ball. Do with that as you will.

He is a good scorer and shooter. He looks for his shot first and foremost, he loves to dribble and dribble and dribble and then dribble some more. Big time ball stopper is what im saying. Liability on defense and dont even think about not starting him because he will eventually complain about it.

Re: Is Isaiah Thomas any good?
I actually liked watching IT play. He was all heart and passion which is good for the young guys on your team. He tends to over dribble and isn't necessarily a pass first guard but he finds the open guys when he doesn't have a shot. He's efficient and gets to the line. He's does an okay job staying in front of his defender and I was impressed at how he got a hand in shooters faces. However he is 5 9. I think Brad Stevens will whip him in shape and you'll like him.

Re: Is Isaiah Thomas any good?
Good:
Great shooter.
Can create his own shot.
Can finish at the basket.
Gets to the line A LOT. Good FT shooter.
Bad:
Ball stopper.
Chucker.
Not very good defense. Too small.
He is talented, but he is the anti-point guard.

He should do good for Boston because the Celtics don't have anyone better than him that will get in his way of scoring.
He's basically a SG in a 5'9 body.
Good guy, great teammate, coachable player.
But terrible playmaker and can hog the ball quite a bit.
Considering where Boston is right now though, I can't see him disappointing the Celtics or their fans.

Not so much. Heard rumblings in the lockerrom in Sac, where he didn't mesh with Cousins. Here he had his run-ins with Dragic.
Heck, there was one guy in Sac who was claiming he was only a good guy to the cameras, and pretty much an azz off the air.
One of our posters (FrankLee? I believe) claimed that he didn't really speak with anyone in the lockeroom in the last month of his tenure here. While these are not 100% affirmed, well, you know, smoke, fire, etc...
Plus I'm pretty sure that he will be btchg about not starting/playing enough in no time - not necessarily to the media, but random looking tweets, etc... I think your insiders will have rmrs/news about these kind of stuff in a little time...
If your coach puts him in his place, and he accepts it - scoring guard off the bench, shorter Jamal Craford type, he can be really good, as he really knows how to put the ball in the bucket. But that's a pretty big IF. Good luck with him!

My eye test does not tell me he is a bad guy. He seems cocky and the lack of communication could easily because Boogie wanted him out and he became the uncool kid.

I think I wasn't clear there. One of the Suns posters claimed that he didn't speak with anyone (or noone spoke to him) in his last month here. Boogie was a different thing. So that's 2 strikes. While I accept that neither situation was perfect for him, I think that Boston is his last chance in the league before he is labeled cancer permanently.
Too bad, he has the talent. He just can't seem to accept that he is not AI, and that mother nature fcked him with his height. If he gets this, and accepts himself, while gets to a good situation (two lead guards, who are clearly better than him, so he can't complain, and his team does a lot of winning), he could be 6th man of the yr candidate easy.

Haven't looked at the standings but in the east, he can win you guys a ton of games and make the playoffs. Selfish player but plays with heart. Actually not a bad defender just small. I think you guys will love him.

Re: Is Isaiah Thomas any good?
an undersized Jason Terry
instant offense. He can score a variety of ways and in a hurry when he is on.
Lacks defense and traditional pg guard passing/leadership capabilities.
He would be a great 6th man on a championship caliber team....but I don't think he could lead one.
His contract is salary cap friendly.
Good luck!!!

Didn't he say he is fine with coming off the bench if he is one playoff team? The Suns are borderline.

Yeah, I believe he said something like that. Along with many other things. Now Boston will find out in a year or so wether he really ment it or was just being a good sport infront of the media.

If he meant it, somebody should replace Ginobili...
I hope Boston will be tanking again so they have to get rid of him...

Re: Is Isaiah Thomas any good?
Mighty Mouse is just an off the bench volume scorer who can be a sparkplug or a tank commander if you give him the reigns of your offense because he will ruin any fluid ball movement with his hogging. But a capable closer although his heroics usually are to the detriment to the team

Re: Is Isaiah Thomas any good?
Isaiah Thomas, in my opinion, gets more unnecessary and undeserved hate from fans than any other player in the league.
He is a very good player. Great ball handler with a sick crossover and he's a great shooter too. Can get to the line whenever he wants and he knocks down his free throws.
He obviously is at a disadvantage on the defensive end because of height but it is nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. Its not like he gets posted up 5 times a game. For his height, he's a good defender.
Everyone hates IT because he is a scoring PG that likes to dribble a lot. Yes, he can over dribble at times but just like his defense it is nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be.
It is RIDICULOUS that IT recieves all this criticism yet other PGs such as Kyrie Irving and Damian Lillard are praised and considered superstars.
The difference between Kyrie and Thomas is height and where they were drafted. That's it. Kyrie is not even close to 10 million a year better than Thomas. Both are great 1 on 1 players with great handles and jumpers. I would even say that IT is a better passer and defender than Kyrie. Its an unpopular opinion but the media is the only reason why people are led to believe its not the case.

Re: Is Isaiah Thomas any good?
Isaiah Thomas is victim of circumstances. He's a nice player, but was completely unnecessary for the Suns, and his signing probably directly led to this trade deadline fiasco. Badly for him, he's a very obvious suspect, mostly because of the way he left Kings.
He's a good player, perfect for sixth man on teams who need second unit points, and on a fairly nice contract. Sadly he wasn't the best fit on the Suns, and he simply needed to go because there was way to much negativity surrounding him.
He thinks right now that he is way too good for the bench, but he is still pretty young and he will soon realize that 6th man role is the perfect fit for him, and when he embraces it he will become very, very valuable player in this league.
