Lol. I'm honestly not convinced Stan wants him back, nothing to do with my thoughts on his game, I just sense this.

Yes, given our holding his bird rights, we essentially get a ~$15 mil player for $10 mil.
We also get the Room MLE of $2,814,000 after we exceed the salary cap to sign free agents and resign Jackson and/or Monroe

Closer to $28 mil, you'd have to add a minimum salary to replace his spot so you gain $9.7 M of cap by renouncing him.

Re: Clearing up the "How much cap space do we have this summer?" question
A few things, we aren't going to decline the team option on Tolliver unless he gets severely injured. We may get a "refund" on some of the Josh Smith money if he re-signs a deal over the minimum (most likely will re-sign with Houston for MLE).
Also, does anybody know when we have to make a decision on Caron Butler? It would be nice to be able to see what free agents we attract before declining his option. My gut says he is not worth $4.5 so if it came down to it, id decline the option to free up money.

Sham says (hover your pointer over the names) that the guarantee date for Butler's second year is June 30th. It's a shame he doesn't seem to be actively updating the salary pages anymore. The following is a another good site I've found for it though. Pincus knows his stuff.

I think Stan is liking having to bigs and will be willing to spend the money to keep him if he wants to stay. Even if it isn't a long term play, once we have him signed he would be a great trade chip later. That is something that could help us get a really good SF.

I don't think he's as coveted by other teams as you think

Re: Clearing up the "How much cap space do we have this summer?" question
I have a feeling Cartier Martin will accept his player option for fear of striking out in free agency...assuming he picks up his 1.2M option and we pick up Tollivers 3M but decline Butlers 4.5M..do we have enough to offer a max contract to a free agent? I'm not sure what the first year of a max deal would look like (the max for young players).

Thanks very helpful...one thing I noticed is Aaron Grey's salary has been stretched over three years which I don't think The Penguin is accounting for currently.

Does Monroe even have a cap hold? I thought him signing the QO removed his bird rights?
EDIT: Nevermind, he only appears to lose them if traded. Odd.

How do we get the Room MLE?
In the old CBA if you were under the cap by $28 mil there would be no exceptions for you - use your space and that's it.
Also, do we need to have 14 or 15 cap holds? I thought it was 12?

I didn't realize Gray had been stretched, that should give us another ~$800k, I'll update the OP.
Picking up Tolliver's option would take about $2 mil off the projected cap space number, ~$900K of his 3 mil is represented by the $400k guarantee and $525 K min cap hold.
Martin picking up his option would cut off ~$700 k (1.2 mil - 525k min cap hold).
The 2011 CBA gives 2 MLEs, the ~$5.5 mil above the cap MLE and the $2.85 Room for those who used cap space.
We'll surely decline Butler's option, the $4.5 mil was way above what anyone else would have offered, it was Stan doing him a favor knowing we were not going to sign anyone of significance after Augustine and Meeks got done.

12 cap spots. I accounted for 11 of them as the 12th would be made up of the highest possible contract we could offer.
