Short of shocking the world and signing LeBron, I don't see any way the Lakers make the playoffs next year. Even if they managed to pull LMA or Marc Gasol, they would be way behind these other teams in terms of total talent and chemistry. Kobe won't even be a top 30 player anymore.

It is actually a Cleveland pick via Boston, so it won't likely be very good. Someone (maybe rsavaj) posted that there was protection on a pick (but I couldn't clarify if this was the one he was talking about or not from the post...it was kind of vague)...it was like protected 1-14 and 27-30 which was odd.

In any respect, I doubt the pick will be before the 20s, since it's Cleveland's next year.

So basically it's a sht pick

Archie was had with late first in what was considered at the time one of the worst drafts ever.

Our GM's strength is scouting. Any first is a great pick.

The fact that our GM's strength is scouting makes trading away a promising pick hurt even more. The Lakers will be terrible for a long time coming, basically every team in the West right now is better and with more young talent than them.

It's the Lakers, they won't be down for long. Almost every game they go to has more Laker fans than opposing team fans, having the crowd often sways the game a bit. The league loves the Lakers. Back when the league was struggling, they leaned heavily on the Lakers and the Celtics. If the league feels having the Lakers in the playoffs is better for the league in general, they will do their best to get them in, like the year we had their pick last time.

They received some of the total bull calls, phantom fouls. They even said they made a mistake on not calling the Kobe foul on Rubio in the last second shot. Did they go back and give Rubio three free throws to possibly win that game for the Wolves....nope, just an oops, we goofed. The league is a joke, and the Lakers are one of their top jesters. They won't be down for long.

Lakers sign Love and Dragic. Randle comes back from injury and plays well. They end up with a top 3 pick this year (Okafor). Good, veteran pieces decide to join the party for the minimum.

Playoffs.

Even if they go with the course and the above scenario works out they would be a fringe team vying for the 8th seed imo, unless the Spurs or Mavs significantly regress and open things up

Won't get Okafor unless they get the #1 pick. Randle is not going to be a great player right away. A 90-yr-old Kobe with two near-All-Star pieces thrown in the stew doesn't equal playoffs. There are at least nine teams with way better foundations and players.

Even if they sign Love and Dragic, Randle plays well and they get Okafor, I doubt they make the playoffs. But the pick would obviously be worse.

But what's done is done

I wonder if we could have got him if we offered the Miami picks along with maybe the Cle pick.

Nah, they wanted a top pick.
Probably aiming Mudiay+Okafor/Towns.

What do you care what the Suns are doing? I do not get it. The Suns already have two second year players in Len and Goodwin and one rookie in Warren. Plus they are going to have their own lottery pick assuming they do not make the playoffs. They also own the rights to Bogdan Bogdanovich in Europe. How many more young players do they need. Obviously the GM felt the Suns probably were not going to get the pick this year and would rather get a proven young scorer in Knight with a lot of upside to build around. What is the big deal. If the pick was unprotected then sure, hold on to it. But it was top five protected this year and top three protected the next two years after that. Chances that the Lakers are going to be in the top five this year are good and then by next season they are probably going to be a much better team. At best the pick could be the 6th pick of the 2015 draft or more likely the 10-16th pick in next years draft. The GM like Knight better than whatever player the team could have gotten with the pick this year or next year. What is wrong with wanting a 23 year old proven scoring guard who is athletic.

It's crazy huh? Like trading Bledsoe for Dudley, right?
