Re: 2014-15 Badger Basketball Game/Discussion Thread
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like the Badgers failed to score a fg for almost ten minutes in the first half. Clank, clank, clank, clank, clank. Dekker seemed to be the only Badger making his open shots. I have to believe they won't shoot that poorly again for that long a stretch.
Somebody mentioned the Badger's failure to double team a hot player like Newbill. It's one thing if some guy is hitting off balance long jump shots. If a guy is repeatedly able to get to the basket and scoring, he must be double-teamed. Everybody knew Newbill was going to drive to the basket. He got basket after basket doing so at crucial moments.
Force the ball out of his hands. Make someone else shoot. It's not like Penn St. has a lot of high scorers other than Newbill. Ryan can be awfully stubborn about these things. I don't know why.

At the end of the day, PSU scored .82 points per possession - UW's best defensive effort in conference play this year.

Re: 2014-15 Badger Basketball Game/Discussion Thread
We need a designated inbounds receiver. Maybe Showalter because of his athleticism (it could have been Hill if he didn't stay redshirted). Our starters are super-skilled but not aggressive or athletic overall. (Sam is athletic, but not very aggressive, and on that note I thought he should have took over toward the end when he was already having a career game). This could be one thing that the bench actually contributes. Once again our bench got shut out. I think most games recently they didn't even record a fg. Going back to the inbounding issue, at least use you to's when you have them. We had 3-4 and were still throwing the ball in panicked.
But yeah, good tracking d by Hayes in a lot of cases. Everybody did their job on d other than the one marking Newbill, which was usually Gasser.
Ugly game, but another one in the win column. The closing 5-game stretch is the toughest season, so hopefully we bring our A or B to most of these. Don't want to open the door for another contender who is lurking like Maryland. That's the key game because they're the only one who can reasonably still catch us. Looking at their remaining schedule, they could very conceivably win out, meaning we'd need to be victorious in 3 of other 4 to not give them a share, and 2 to not even give it to them outright.

This UNC/Duke game is a massive for the Badgers. If the Badgers are a two seed, they're likely in UK's region. Getting Duke to a #2 would be huge.

Overall, yes. My beef is during close games Bo's decision to not to double team hot players at crucial moments. Apart from missing multiple good shots, Wisconsin was the better team. But instead of putting Penn St. away, they allowed them to get back into the game and get very close. Down the stretch Newbill was scoring at will guarded by one person.

Why's that? I know they cater to geography a bit but they're not going to be dumb enough to **** the Badgers like that.
If the Badgers are the #5 or #6 team (i.e. just miss the last 1 seed), they'll give them an Omaha, Louisville, or Columbus opening game and send them out in Dook, Virginia, or Gonzaga's region.
Note: this obviously goes under the assumption that Wisconsin is sitting right on the cusp of being #4, 5, or 6 on the S-curve come Selection Sunday.
I think if the Badgers hold serve and maybe lose 1 more game that they'll get the 1-seed over the Zags.

This news came out yesterday, but Jackson is aiming for the MSU game next Sunday as his comeback.

Very good news. I hope they leave Koenig with the first team and Jackson can dominate the ball with the second unit.
Duke has the best resume in college BB. Wins @UVA, @WI, @Lou, beat ND by 30, etc. Have some inexplicable losses as well but Bucky's best win is like Ok or Georgetown or something. We aren't taking Duke's 1 seed. Gonzaga should have won @Az but lost in OT. I think WI takes "their" 1 seed.

I'm becoming a Vitto Brown fan. I think he might be able to have a breakout down the stretch and into the tournament.

I don't mind what he brings. I think next year he might do a decent job as a big man...but what are you seeing? He seems to be a guy with the size and athleticism to guard the big guys and play big and when he is right, his jumper looks smooth.
However, all I have seen is that he hurries said jumper and throws it up over defenders and misses terribly once or twice before getting yanked. He fouls and isn't in position.
I hope he steps up next year and think he will, but all I can really hope for this year is that he makes a few nice blocks and rebounds and maybe a timely dunk or something.

I'm seeing the game slow down for him... just a little bit and obviously that's a major step towards becoming more productive. I'm thinking maybe he starts giving a larger contribution into the B10 tournament and then possibly in the NCAA tournament. I agree he looks ready to step up next year as well.

Re: 2014-15 Badger Basketball Game/Discussion Thread
Next year Kaminsky will be gone and very possibly Dekker. Dujan is also a senior. So who will be in the frontcourt with Hayes, and who will be in the backcourt with Koenig? I see the Badgers signed some kid from Ohio who's rated highly, but he's not a center. I've heard good things about this Happ kid, but he's not a center either.
So the Badgers look alright at three positions, but will need to come up with another guard or two, and some big men. Depth might be a problem. Showalter may improve enough to get more minutes, but he'll really have to improve his outside shot. Interesting questions for next season.

Hayes, Happ, Brown and possibly Illikainen (but I feel he'll redshirt) or Thomas.
If they land Stone then he'll start at center.

Yeah, I know they have a good shot at Stone. He has the talent, but after seeing one his games on ESPN where Dominican got their a.. kicked, I'm not sure about his desire. He took his time getting up and down the floor on both off. and def. That won't fly with Bo Ryan. Illikainen looked good on a video clip I just watched, but I'd like to see him in a game situation. Maybe there's one on the internet.

Big game against Maryland right now. Can't afford a let up, especially if we want that 1 seed.

I'm sure you just heard Lunardi explain why the Badgers are probably in Kentucky's region. It's dumb but it'd happen.
