As has previously been mentioned, SF was the bigger concern at the time. I think Stan would have pushed harder for Joe Johnson (a package of Singler + expirings). Jennings future has major questions, it seems many are expecting a full 100% recovery by the beginning of next year. He's a guy built on quickness and he might never be the same player again, Stan knows that which is a big factor in making the move for Jackson, a guy who could be the long term starter.
I'm interested to see how this plays out. Unless Jennings makes significant strides by the summer or Dinwiddie closes the season strong, I'd have to imagine we explore adding a backup PG this summer. That might not leave a spot for Jennings, who'll be the type of expiring deal to help facilitate a trade.
^ This has been way overlooked in our post-deadline-Jackson-Euphoria — the Pistons are now ridiculously set up to play "financial facilitator" this summer. We've discussed ad nauseam how SVG can go over the cap to re-sign Moose and RJ, which means our cap space (~18.5M, per Penguin's projection thread) can be spent on other FAs or in trades, but we can actually save another team a lot more money than that. Jennings is an $8.3M expiring, and Butler, Tolliver, and now Shawne Williams account for ~$9M in non-guaranteed contracts for 2015. Add them all up, and we could offer someone ~$27.5M in
IMMEDIATE cap relief and ~$36M for 2016 if we swap Jennings for a longer contract. And we can do all of that without touching any of our young core (Drummond, Monroe, RJ & KCP) or our first round draft pick. The options for us to continue building this summer are practically endless; we're set up to draft, spend in free agency, and play the third team / facilitator / "sell cap space" role in trades.
