My opinion is probably gonna be rare, but I'll give you proof as to what I think. MKG's offense hasn't developed since he's been in the league. He was always a player who had a solid offensive game, his only flaw was range on his jumper and how ugly it was. He averaged over 25 points in high school, was one of, if not considered the best high school recruit going into college. He's cousins with Dajuan Wagner, who was the New Jersey high school star who once scored 100 points in a game and got drafted by Cleveland, so basketball is in his genes.
if you look at his game while in college, you'll see a guy who broke defenders down and could score around the rim with a wide array of moves. He could post up, he could use power, or finesse, and the thing that really got me to realize how skilled he was, was how he would consistently, whenever he chose to, get a rebound and go coast to coast and score. Dribbling around defenders with speed and complete control, you don't see the average defensive, "offensively challenged" players do this, he did it at will and was for the most part unstoppable.
What has changed, MKG did alter his shooting form, and he has more confidence in it but his range still doesn't extend to three point range at this point. He has learned how to attack the rim a little more cautiously because at times he would run over defenders who knew how to draw charges on the NBA level. Other than that, his success really has to do with more playing time, and the coaches finally realizing MKG is more than just a energy guy and a defender. That box that he was put in (by labeling him a defensive energy player) has IMO, somewhat stunted his development, cause the things he has learned, like driving to the rim without picking up fouls, would've been learned from getting the chance to shoot more in games, which he really hasn't done much of cause the coach would isolate him on the side of the floor out of the realm of the offense for fear of him shooting, something I still get on the coaches case about to this day.
Anthony Davis, who was his college teammate, has a youtube interview where he mentions MKG and how MKG always felt that he couldn't be stopped on the court when he wanted to score. Now, If you play basketball, you know guys who just hustle and defend but cant shoot, when they get the rock, they wont dribble, or look to shoot, they get the ball and immediately cuff it like a Running back running through the defensive line until a teammate comes to get it. That's not MKG, this guy gets rebounds, and without thinking would dribble up the court himself and be a one man fast break, and he still does it to this day! So again, I don't think he's done anything special or different, I don't think someone had to teach him how to play, our coaches are just starting to see how good he actually is on both sides of the court. He may never be a 2nd option, but he's definitely a play maker with high ball IQ, and he knows how to play the game.
