Why can't we use him the Wright way?

Post#1 » by JTrain » Thu Mar 5, 2015 7:04 am

Among centers and forwards 6'8 or taller:

The Dallas version of Brandan Wright this season ranks 3rd in the league in PER, behind Whiteside and Durant. The Phoenix Wright is tied for 33rd with Tiago Splitter

Mav Wright is 1st in the league in WS/48. Sun Wright is 10th.

Mav Wright's 76.2 TS% is #1, by a long shot. Sun Wright's 61.3% is good enought for 12th.

Mav Wright's Box Plus/Minus is tied for 1st (with KD) at 6.8. Sun Wright's is 1.8, tied for 30th.

In simpler statistical terms, Mav Wright scores significantly more, blocks significantly more shots and gets to the free throw line more per possession than Sun Wright.

Are we doomed to misuse Wright or is there hope we can figure it out?

It's not just Wright. It's Len as well. It's this gimmick basketball style of play we are running that we don't utilize our big men properly. We need a different system, or a different philosophy. Something.

Umm... really?

Look at those Mavs Wright numbers, I think its safe to say they were unsustainable. I'm not going to worry about a guy who is currently putting up Wright's very very good per minute stats just because he is not equalizing his virtually impossible to equal stats he had with the Mavs.

Furthermore, his job with the Mavs was much simpler. He almost always shared the court with Dirk, who's spacing empties the lane for his fellow big, or Chandler who can do all the interior heavy lifting.

Seriously, this is a guy shooting 57%, getting a decent rebound rate, decent block rate, virtually never turning the ball over... the OP seems to be making a case that this is all some sort of failing on the team because Wright is not, literally, putting up stats that are equal or better than the best players in the entire league.

I don't know if Carlisle ever ran specific plays for Wright but he put Wright in position to be successful.

I know Hornacek tried that Barron-Wright lineup a couple times, hope he never goes back to that. Either Tucker or a Morris brother has to be the PF when Barron or Wright are at C.

He needs a good PnR guard, Bled isn't that guy.

Knight should be good at it but for some reason they just don't run it.

Wright is so underused on a team using EARL BARRON. I thought we might be able to keep him long-term but he's going to sign elsewhere for sure if this is the minutes he's getting.

He plays with guys who can not and never will utilize him the right way. Isolation plays are nothing he can count on.

I don't know. Bledsoe did PnRs just fine with Plumlee when Frye was there to create the spacing needed.

Like another poster said, its Len as well. This is 100% Hornacek fault. We actually have pretty good bugs now with great length so let's take advantage. We need some better off ball movement to open up the inside more, and actually feed them.

Im really worried that Hornacek is going to keep this garbage style up for a long time. I guess the good news is he is going to make Len and Wright very cheap for us to sign.

Actually he sustained very high numbers in all the major categories over three plus seasons at Dallas, placing him in the top five bigs statistically in almost every category every year during that span. So to call it unsustainable is empirically false.

It's funny, in your first paragraph you basically imply that his numbers with the Mavs this year were a fluke ("unsustainable", "virtually impossible"). Then, in the next paragraph, you go on to give reasons for why his numbers were good ("Dirk...spacing", "Chandler... interior heavy lifting"). Just keep that second paragraph and we're on the way to a discussion.

Carlisle is basically a god, right?
He can make basically anyone in a solid player.

About what we're doing wrong with Wright... he's basically a PNR machine but our guards dont play the 'roll', so often he gets the ball in awkwards positions and try to post up (not his game at all)

Let him screening like crazy and diving to the rim ALL THE TIME, even if he doesnt gets the ball, he'll be in a good position for a possible 2nd chance (of course, put a reliable 3pt shooter in weakside to make this play even harder to defend.)

This should be our bread and butter with Wright on the floor.
