Clarkson Proud to represent the Philippines

Despite being drafted just nine months ago, Clarkson already has plenty of that support. Born to a Filipino mother, Annette Davis, Clarkson is grateful for the people that his heritage has brought him close to, whether it’s through social media or in person.

“In Detroit, there was a big group that came to watch us play against Detroit,” he said. “They had a Filipino Heritage Night. I got to speak with them, take pictures, all that stuff. It’s crazy. I didn’t know it was going to be that much support from a fan base like that. But I’ve been learning about how basketball culture is over there. It’s great.”

For his part, Clarkson is making the most of his platform. Though he is ineligible to play for the Philippines national team due to a FIBA rule that mandates players acquire dual citizenship before they turn 16, Clarkson is looking to secure an exemption so he could play for Gilas Pilipinas.

“It definitely would mean a lot,” he said. “It’s just one of those things you want to do, like how I want to make my city proud and make that country proud as well.”
The 22-year-old also wants to make his first trip to the Philippines this summer. He hasn’t yet worked out the details for his visit, but Clarkson looks forward to seeing his mother’s home country.

“I haven’t been there yet,” Clarkson said. “But I’ve heard it’s a great place to go and experience everything — especially to see the basketball culture. I’ve heard they have outside courts that are nicer than some of the indoor courts and stuff like that. It’s going to be a blessing to go over there.”

Apparently Nate Robinson is 1/8 Filipino.

You're welcome to play at every street corner bro. Get ready to play with half naked dudes wearing flip flops.

He can still play for the Philippines national team, but it would mean as a naturalized player spot, which usually just goes to a Center (Marcus Douthit/Andray Blatche). FIBA won't make an exemption unless they change the rule completely. I think he's better off just focusing on his NBA career right now and just doing summer tours. If he were to play in this year's FIBA Asia Championship, it would overlap with next season's training camp.

As a Filipino Lakers fan, I would love him to play for the Philippines. But he should be naturalized. And I think what we need is a big man and not a guard.

Obviously a huge fan of JClark , first and foremost because he's a Laker and he reps the Asian culture as well.

But talkin to some of my flip friends alot of them wish there was a full blooded Filipino reppin in the league. Like Jeremy Lin for the Chinese/Taiwanese fan bases.
I had high hopes for 6'10 Jappeth Aguilar who was most known for dunking on Kevin Durant a couple summers ago in Kobe's Asian tour exhibitions. But he seems too comfortable stayin home in the Philippines. So that ship may have sailed already.

As for partial fillipino blooded NBA players JClark is not the first. As mentioned before Nate Robinson has 1/8th flip blood. And you guys forgot the most important and best, Scottie Pippen also has some Fillipino blood.

I think my little big homie 6'5 Kobe Paras from UCLA will be that first full blooded Flip to rep.
Look out folks we Asians are taking over. :lift: :usa: :box:

Just remember it started with yo boy KDogg24 though.
The Asian sensation revolution began with me :D

Raymond Townsend is supposedly the first NBA player with Filipino heritage.

Nate Robinson's "1/8th" came from an interview with Dime Magazine, but there have been conflicting reports if he actually has that heritage or his family just knew Filipinos that helped raised him. There are a lot more "part-Asian" players, just as there were rumors. Demarcus Cousins was once rumored to be part Filipino too. While former NBA players Rex Walters, Robert Swift, and Corey Gaines were part Japanese. Current San Antonio Spur, Kyle Anderson, is part Chinese.

Japeth Aguilar just wasn't good enough and was very raw. He only made the practice team for the Santa Cruz Warriors but never officially played in the D-League because he was waived. He also had 2 years at Western Kentucky to develop. There have been players from South Korea that played in the D-League. A 5'7" Japanese player, Yuki Togashi, is in the D-League right now.

Kobe Paras might be the first Filipino-born and raised National, but he isn't "full-blooded". His biological mother is named Jackie Forster, who has a White American father. We have to see how he does against NCAA D1 competition first before the NBA talk.
If you look at the national teams, there are plenty of players that are of mixed descent. Nonetheless, there are other players that have Filipino/Asian heritage around the world that are being recruited to college, including a top Canadian prospect Christian David.

The Philippines has given European and South American teams trouble during the last FIBA World Cup because of the Filipinos’ speed, quickness and ‘beautifully chaotic’ play with the dribble-drive offense. The problem comes during the clutch when the games slow down and their lack of size is more apparent. The coach was a brilliant strategist and game planner but needs serious help with X’s and O’s in creating plays down the stretch especially with the physical disadvantage. Most of the guards are too small to create their own shot. This is where Jordan Clarkson would come in handy. That team needs its own version of a shot creator when the game goes down the wire.

The problem would then lie in deciding which among him or bigs like Andray Blatche should the Philippines put in as their naturalized player. The only big man who has proven himself to be at the world class level is Junemar Fajardo, who outplayed Gorgui Dieng during their match against Senegal.

Lat time they almost had both Blatche and McGee.
