Ellis: Jackson trade sacrificed present for future
http://www.freep.com/story/sports/nba/p ... /24565361/
Having trouble pasting the article, but is basically says SVG knew he destabilizing the team and possibly hurting the playoff run when he made the Jackson trade and the follow up deal with Boston. Augustine was accustomed to the team and playing well, and it hurt our floor spacing.
Bottom line, it was about the future and the team isn't panicking about the rocky start with Reggie. They are committed to him as the point of the future and very much want to resign him for next season.

Here's another article about SVG's commitment to Jackson. Basically, current struggles won't deter them from resigning him.

Re: Ellis: Jackson trade sacrficed present for future
I'm very excited to see what Stan does in the offseason. I would re sign Reggie, draft either Stanley Johnson, Mario Hezonja or Kelly Oubre unless we win the lottery then I would draft Karl-Anthony-Towns who imo would be the perfect fit next to Drummond. If we don't draft a sf we can sign one in free agency and if Monroe leaves we can hopefully get a decent stretch 4 to replace him. Please basketball gods just once can you let the pistons win the draft lottery lol.

Re: Ellis: Jackson trade sacrficed present for future
Every indication I've read is that Detroit plans to retain Jackson this summer. Regardless of whether we like it or not.
SVG has even spoken about bringing in a shooting coach this summer. This could possibly help RJ's stroke as well as Drummond's free throw ailment.
I'm perfectly fine being in the lottery again. Making the playoffs was a really exciting possibility, but I'm past that notion now. Grab one of the small forward prospects in the 8-10 range, re-configure the team in free agency and come back as a legit playoff team in the east.

Re: Ellis: Jackson trade sacrficed present for future
Sacrificed what present? A faint shot at squeaking into the playoffs and getting smoked in the first round? Yeah, I'll take building for the future over that.

I'm starved for Piston playoff basketball, but I have to agree with the upshot of your post.

Well, that pretty much means Monroe leaves and we have a little more money to play with in the off-season (Not a whole lot mind you) and hopefully, we start losing enough to draft Mario or even Kristap.

Re: Ellis: Jackson trade sacrficed present for future
I questioned the move at first and didn't want it to happen, but after seeing the price we paid.. I really did not care about the damage to the present. Getting a building block of Jackson's quality for that price is a win, regardless if we lost out the rest of the season
. I'm still hoping we see him and Jennings together next year.

Eh, this is the narrative that has to be applied to keep fans optimistic. You obviously wont hear SVG say that the trade was a mistake.

Re: Ellis: Jackson trade sacrficed present for future
The "make the playoffs now vs build for the future" narrative in the article is an oversimplification. The impact that making the playoffs team can have on a young team's culture, and desirability as an FA destination is tremendous. In the stretch where we were playing good basketball the camaraderie, body language and effort looked like that of a contender, not a lottery team. Getting bounced in the first round certainly didn't hurt Atlanta who has more or less the same core of players it had last year, but with a healthy Horford, and they've carried that confidence into this year. Or Indiana several years ago who built on their playoff run and eventually went to the ECF twice after after really only adding David West to their core. That doesn't mean that we should sacrifice the present for the future, but playoff experience and winning in general is every bit as crucial as it's cracked up to be imo.
Give me the option of making the playoffs with DJ at the helm versus getting one of Oubre/Johnson/Hezonja/Winslow and Reggie meeting the expectations he has set for himself as PGOTF, and I'll take the second option every time. But obviously, that remains to be seen. And if in fact he does not pan out, this trade will have been a failure because it probably ended out playoff chances and killed our spacing. A low risk high reward failure, but a failure nonetheless. Time will tell.

SVG really believes in Jackson, Monroe & Drummond as the 3 cornerstones it appears.

And that's an oversimplification of the Pistons' current situation. No one knows what Jennings will be when he returns from a season-ending injury. While the Pistons appeared headed for the playoffs the way they were going with Jennings, the fact remains that without him they were not playing as well and the playoffs looked like a weaker possibility. Hence a low risk, potentially high return for the future trade being made. This is not the same as Atlanta's situation.

Re: Ellis: Jackson trade sacrficed present for future
^^^ apparently Jennings is like three weeks ahead of his rehab schedule, but I know what you mean about his uncertainty.
in general, why does trading for Jackson have to be about 'tanking' this year? why can't it simply be about acquiring a talented young player for a pretty minimal cost? any non-contending team would be smart to do that, even if it sacrifices short-term chemistry.

RJ is not tanking us this year. Yes, it was disruptive, but it's not really the main problem. Our defense has been poor all year and our starting wing players have been 5-33 from distance in the last 5. If we are going to play with 2 post bigs and a slashing pg, we need wing players knocking down jumpers or the spacing is going to be horrible. Add in your stretch 4 off the bench going 5-24 and off course the paint is going to be packed.
As was abundantly obvious to the start the year, this team is going to look bad without some high volume 3 point shooters on the wing and bench. Monroe and Dre look like all-stars against a spread floor, but both turn the ball over and miss close shots in heavy traffic.

Re: Ellis: Jackson trade sacrficed present for future
Stan knew it was gonna hurt the floor spacing. I think our woes are more directed towards Prince than Jackson. Because Jackson plays great P&R basketball and can take it inside at any point, he's not a threat to our floor spacing. However, there NEEDS to be a shooting SF in the starting lineup. What you have instead is Prince slowing the ball movement and not taking the shots that need to be taken after the catch. He like to hold it to the side and post up and pass it when there's nothing else available. He plays smart basketball but that type of play only works when you have a PF that can shoot from mid and long range. Prince doesn't compliment the team and he's walking away after this season. I see a bright future with Jackson, he's working hard and you can see it. Just a matter of getting more talent in. With the draft and free agency, I see more improvement next season. I really wanted them to go to the Playoffs and I think they had a GREAT shot at it with Augustine. But you can't knock Stan for making that trade. It was a smart move and I support it. He sold Augustine high and I would've done the exact same.

I'm not sure how committed he is to Monroe. He played chicken with him to the point of his taking the QO. Not sure he's sold on him playing with Dre.

I'm not a fan of Reggie but we weren't much better if at all with DJ. Remember guys we got blew out by the Twolves and Philly, imo we weren't a playoff team after Jennings got hurt.

Re: Ellis: Jackson trade sacrficed present for future
I guess it depends how the team approaches the next two season. I felt the current team was built to contend for the ECF. You got size, outside shooting, a pg/backup pg that can score, slash, a pretty good bench. Maybe not this year but all the momentum in this year was something to carry over for next season.
