A friend of mine has a son who is having heart surgery tomorrow. His son is very young. Please keep him in your thoughts or prayers if you believe in that.

Some interesting ideas for college basketball (and possibly NBA too) in this piece - College Basketball is Unwatchable

But, forget about complaining, how do we fix things?! Two rules changes, in particular, would eradicate this ridiculousness.

First, allow no timeouts in the last three minutes of the game. Okay, fine, maybe allow one timeout in the last three minutes. Imagine how the game would move along! Also imagine how exciting it would be to watch the players just … play — with spontaneity, skill, nerve, and their sense of the moment. Don’t the players work hard enough in practice to understand what they should try to do as a close game winds down? Do we really need coaches micromanaging every little thing down the stretch? I’m sure we don’t, and if the turnovers, missed shots and other misadventures that often follow timeouts are any indication, the coaches would be well advised to stop interrupting the flow of the game, anyway.

Players play, so let them play.

Second, if there is at least a 10-point spread between the teams as the game enters the last two minutes, then for the duration of regulation, either: (a) any non-shooting foul by the trailing team should result in two free throws and the ball out of bounds to the leading team; or (b) clock stoppages should be abolished when the trailing team commits non-shooting fouls. Not only would either of such rules obviously speed things up, but they would also prevent a team that has been outclassed for nearly the entire game from potentially manipulating the game’s outcome with repeated intentional fouls.

But shouldn’t a trailing team have a chance to come back, you protest?

To that, I say play better in the first 38 minutes and don’t fall so far behind. Or, if you do, try this novel approach: play defense and steal the ball a few times! Work on a 1–3–1 full court trap or other defense that will pressure the leading team into turnovers. Earn the comeback. Earn the result — and do it in three or four minutes of real time, not 15.

But isn’t making free throws under pressure part of the game, you cry? Yes, but only to a point, a point that these endless games grossly exceed.

And what about a genuinely unintentional non-shooting foul by the trailing team? Wouldn’t possession to the shooting team, or running time, be too harsh? Perhaps; but again, I say that is the price to pay for falling so far behind, and it is a price that is preferable to continuing the mind-numbing endurance test that watching the end of games has become.

I actually quite like the idea of the penalty for non-shooting fouls, but that's going to lead to a ton of flopping.

Looks like the Saints are tearing it apart. Looking like the Panthers could dominate the south for years now

Hey folks,

Thanks again for the suggestions. I had a great time in Charlotte. Hit up Queen City BBQ after the game on Friday (which was terrible and I'm glad you won) and kept it simple with Fitzgerald's. It was a very interesting experience down there, and it looks like after all that construction is done downtown, the area is going to be even bigger and brighter.

My only regret is that I forgot to by a Hugo doll from the game. Pretty pissed at myself for that.
