Stan Van Gundy: "Rockets are using Josh Smith the right way"

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Sun Mar 8, 2015 2:52 pm

Detroit coach Stan Van Gundy has been impressed with how well Josh Smith has fit in with the Rockets.

Smith played the first part of the season with the Pistons before being waived from the team then picked up by the Rockets in late December.

Smith is averaging 11.9 points and 5.2 rebounds off the bench for the Rockets. He has been praised for bringing an offensive spark to the team.

“I think when they moved him to the bench, he has played very well in that role for them,” Van Gundy said. “Coming off the bench, he is helping them offensively and rebounding the ball. His shooting percentage has gone up.”

Van Gundy said the Rockets have figured out the best ways to use Smith and that it has helped improve their team.

“He has been a lot more efficient and initially helped them get through the Terrence Jones injury and now is helping them with the Dwight injury,” Van Gundy said. “It is a great pick up and I think he has helped them.”

Sure wish the Pistons could have used him the right way. 1st big off the bench
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

He needed to be next to a #1 scorer, we didn't and still don't have that here.

Yeah, as the 20th scoring option off the bench.

Smith never would have accepted that role in Detroit.

If only we had James Harden to cancel out Smiths inefficiency.

Yeah, good for him. I'm glad that he is fitting well into a good situation. Rockets are probably still a first round exit.

Probably the biggest pretender in the top 8 out west.

Yeah, all that money to play given by us and he cashes out the moment he realizes he ain't going to the playoffs.

That's a clown move.

His minutes haven't declined that much - 32 to 26 per game. And his field goal attempts per 36 minutes and per 100 possessions are about the same.

Did anyone in the media ask why SVG couldn't do the same thing?

why would they? I think they're smart enough to realize that we have nothing like the Rockets do to negate his negatives and he sure as hell wouldn't like coming off the bench for a rebuilding team..simple as that.

because josh smith would have become a locker room problem and made everything that much worst. As soon as smith left here, his demand was "i want to be a starter".........he wasn't going to come off the bench and be happy on a 5-23 team. On a contending team like the rockets, its a lot easier to hide his mistakes and a lot easier to convince hiim to buy in

Yep, this was what he initially demanded from teams when he was waived.

Also, I think it says a lot about his skill level that he couldn't even start for HOU when TJones and Dwight were out.

Smith looks solid for the Rockets, SVG used him horribly if we are being honest. Had no clue why Smith was able to dominate the offense and lead the team in minutes and FGA. That said, I'm glad he's gone.

On another note, both Jonas and Gigi are looking like solid role players for Boston, who are now gelling and winning games since the IT acquisition.

Return to Detroit Pistons
