MKG's mid-range game

Post#1 » by yosemiteben » Fri Mar 6, 2015 7:22 pm

MKG has a FG% of 43% from 15 - 19 feet on 2.3 attempts per game, which is higher than the following players:

Kevin Durant
Blake Griffin
LaMarcus Aldridge
Jimmy Butler
Anthony Davis
John Wall
Dwyane Wade
Marc Gasol
Avery Bradley
Carlos Boozer
Luis Scola

He also has a FG% of 57.9% from 10 - 14 feet, though it's on a very low number of attempts (0.4 per game).

Now obviously MKG is getting left alone a lot which is helping his percentages, but he is light years better than he was last season, thanks to this man:

Huge props to MKG for the work that has gone in to reworking his shot. Two years down of a three year project with Price, here's hoping he can extend that range next offseason.

If he starts hitting off the dribble jumpers at that rate, he will vault into one of the top ten sfs in the league.

New poster (but not new to the site). If he can somehow start attempting (and hitting) three's with at least a 30% clip, the league will have a problem on it's hands.

I'm surprised when he misses.

What a transformation.

I wish Clifford would look for opportunities to play MKG at PF. When teams go small he puts Marvin in to "defend" the perimeter. We could run lineups like Kemba, Mo, Hend/Lance, MKG, and Cody/Biz. I think this would be way more effective than what we normally do against small ball. He's been quoted saying he wants to give MKG minutes at PF, but it never happens.

You think you could play him as a small ball 4 if he gets his shooting stroke down pat this year?

I think by now we can all agree MKG is not a bad offensive player, and that the more he plays, the better for our team. I think we should now put him in position offensively where he is a viable scoring option, that position to me is in the high post or on the left side of the court (where Al always posts up) that way, he can attack with his strong hand toward the paint which is his strength.

There are still too many periods where the guys play keep away from MKG, mostly in the second half of games, I dont know why we still do this, but we stop the team movement in the second half really only because we still dont have faith in MKG as a offensive threat. This is why we've struggled late in so many games cause we only use half of the court offensively by avoiding swinging the ball on the right side of the court where MKG is set at. This is why Cliff would bench MKG late before cause you had complete ball movement when he was benched since all the players had outside shooting abilities and there's no apprehension to swing the ball to that side with someone who is a set up shooter as opposed to MKG who is not.

So put MKG in position where we will be able to confidently swing him the ball (midrange, around the high post or left elbow area) and we'll see a better player in him and more team production offensively.

Also, MKG isnt a dumb player, he usually makes the right pass or the right play in games, instead of putting him in the shame corner and then we play a 4 man weave on the opposite side of the court with MKG standing there watching, we should have him take Mcbob's role where he can swing the ball to both sides of the court so that way we still have good ball movement and we utilise the entire court as opposed to just weaving around Al. This is more difficult to defend and gives us more options offensively.

Honestly when that awful second unit steps out there MKG is usually the best offensive weapon.
