So Payne had a 16pt/15reb game tonight vs Clipshow ....
Had some impressive dunks as well
Last two weeks averaging 6/7 so nothing to write home about. But looked good tonight

In context, Payne did it in the losing end of a blow out against the Clips. 14 of his points came in the 2nd half when all the starters were already pulled out of the game.

Actually only one of his 2nd half baskets came with the starters out of the game.

I'm not sure where you got this information. Payne had a total of 1 point when the game was out of reach.
Here is a list of when he got his baskets and the resulting scoring margin:
2Q 3m to go, 6 --> 4
3Q 10.5m to go, 9 --> 6
3Q 8m to go, 9 --> 7
3Q 6.5m to go, 12 --> 10
3Q 4.5m to go, 11 --> 9
3Q 4m to go, 12 --> 10
3Q 2m to go, 13 --> 11
4Q 1.5m to go, 19 --> 18
15 of his 16 points were when the game was still being contested. In any case, I'm not confident he'll have long term success in the NBA, but I do hope he succeeds. The trade was good for him as Atlanta was just too talented for him to ever get an opportunity. Best of luck with your year, guys.

Yeah, that dunk he had over that backup scrub DeAndre Jordan really puts his scoring in context.

AJC's Mark Bradley:
I was less than enamored with the Adreian pick last summer, but the decision to trade a young, athletic big man mid-season is mind boggling. Especially, since we did not replace him with a rotation player.
Especially when our existing front line got destroyed by another young, athletic big man in the Conf Finals.
I've said it before: I believe Adreian could have at least helped contain Tristan Thompson in that 4 game sweep.
Payne at 6'10" - 245lbs could have at least blocked out Tristan Thompson at 6'9" 240 lbs better than Muscala and Antic who were clearly overmatched.
Payne was not the difference between winning and losing the series. But giving up on a 23 year old lottery talent after 3 months in the middle of pennant chase is crazy.
HEREWe saw as much last year. The Hawks had the 15th pick in that draft, too...They took Adreian Payne of Michigan State, a big man who could shoot. They traded him to Minnesota in February for a lottery-protected Round 1 pick. Payne had played 19 minutes for the Hawks.
Said Wilcox: “We were so deep on our front line there wasn’t going to be much opportunity for him to play.”
So deep? In the playoffs, both Mike Scott and Pero Antic had games where they weren’t deployed. Elton Brand was used only to foul somebody intentionally. The “deep” front line had been reduced to the three starters and Mike Muscala...
Come the Eastern Conference finals, the Hawks were outrebounded 208-157 in four games. Cleveland more than doubled them in offensive rebounds (55 to 27). This was shocking to see but no real shock: Over the regular season, the Hawks were 27th in a 30-team league in rebound differential.

Adreian Payne would not have made the playoff roster. I still say he was drafted with plans to move Millsap and insurance policy if Scott got a better deal.
This team wasn't supposed to be good. They were supposed to be okay and have a huge trade piece in Millsap to move midseason...it didn't work out that way.

The Payne trade will always baffle me. You can argue both ways on it, but trading him midseason really made no sense to me. Wouldnt have made the playoff roster???? Austin Daye made it, and played like 2 min.

Anyone on the roster past a certain date is eligible for the playoffs even if they are inactive as per the regular 13 man roster rules, this isn't 2001.
Can't say that I follow the logic of the team having intentions of moving Millsap either. True he was technically the only healthy PF under contract at the time of the draft necessitating the move to draft Payne but the single greatest value of an expiring contract is taking back some other team's crap contracts. That doesn't fit the MO of the front office where every deal is supposed to be a value deal, that and it additionally doesn't make sense that you draft insurance for your only available PF only to trade said only available PF.

If Ferry had his way Gasol and Deng would have signed here in the off season. So who do you think was going to get moved? If we had been a middling team midseason, Milsap would have been gone. Maybe not demaree because his deal was too good, but they would have dangled milsaps expiring for youth. And Payne fits into that youth movement. Then we became a great team and it wasn't a "give young players minutes even if it loses is games" type of situation.

Nothing I have seen demonstrates that was even remotely possible whether we were winning or not.
What youth has Bud given minutes too? Dennis Schroeder?

No, Rip, your version of history seems to not jive with reality. There is zero way the Hawks could have afforded both Gasol and Deng lest of course you are now going to tell us too that the idea all along was to move Sap in a sign and trade for them. In fact, Ferry only went after Gasol after contract talks with Deng fizzled. And again, why exactly is another team willing to give up youth for an expiring contract that they don't even hold full Bird rights to? Yea, sure if the Hawks took back an albatross contract to go along with it that would make sense. It's also a rather large stretch to pretend that after still making the playoffs and performing well despite the large amount of injuries that the Hawks had zero intention of being even just good the next season with health and a greater amount of depth.
No, Payne served as insurance for the fact Pero, Scott, and Brand were all different degrees of free agents and Al was recovering from his pec injury and if Sap happened to leave the following summer. If Ferry had his way Sap would still have 2 years left on his original deal, if Bud has his way Sap will be back for at least 2 more years..... I really don't know how we can pretend that the narrative was that Sap was just some trade fodder from the get go and Payne some sort of highly thought of successor.
And Panda has a point, the Hawks were in the midst of massive injuries and a losing season the year before yet didn't turn to a youth movement. Dennis was firmly planted on the bench and none of the vets were contemplated being moved for youth......how does Ferry's strategy go 180 over just one summer?

Re: Adreian Payne traded to Minnesota for 2017 First Round pick
I think Payne was the combination of insurance for another BIG injury (AH) , Brand/Pero all being some version of a FA same with Scott and he was probably "the best player available" at the time.
