Roster Choices - Walker/Beasley 10 days - What do we do?
Henry Walker signed a 2nd 10-day contract on March 3, 2015. It ends tomorrow.
Here are Henry's numbers:
8.4 ppg in 9 games with 4 starts and 27 minutes played.
2.9/8.8 FG shooting (33%). 1.8/6.3 3PT shooting 28%. 0.9/1.1 FT shooting.
0 ORB, 3.1 DRB, 3.1 TRB
0.9 AST, 0.6 STL, 0.4 BLK, 0.9 TOV, 3.1 PF
6.2 PER, 0 WS
Michael Beasley signed a 2nd 10-day contract on March 8, 2015. It ends on Tuesday between the Cleveland and Portland games.
Here are Michael's numbers:
11 ppg in 7 games with 0 starts and 25 minutes played.
5.0/11.6 FG shooting (43%), 0.4/2 3PT shooting (21%). 0.6/0.9 FT shooting (67%)
0.7 ORB, 3.1 DRB, 3.9 TRB
0.7 AST, 0.9 STL, 0.3 BLK, 1.6 TOV, 3.1 PF
9.4 PER, -0.1 WS
Both players are on minimum contracts. It's fair to say they are playing with great force, but not producing great numbers.
We have bad depth at SF, PF, and C. Bird had a great performance tonight, but without Whiteside (which is always apparently a possibility), Bird, Beasley and Haslem are all we have in the power rotation. Before Beasley arrived, Deng was playing some PF too.
So, simple question this time. Do we keep them or let them go? Locking these players down essentially defines the team for the rest of the year. An open roster space is an important tool, however a player not on a 10-day contract that is waived from one team can no longer be signed by another and play in postseason. We could sign and play Blatche or Miller (if available) or Ray Allen, but not a waived Kyle Korver.
Other teams are engaged in the same maneuvers. Quincy Miller's 2nd 10-day contract, for example, ends on Friday.

It's going to be a tough decision for the staff. Do they spend the money on a season they can't win a championship? We could definitely use both players.

Tough choice. I think we will keep both. It's getting too late to integrate yet more players to the team. We are still struggling to get the guys we've got to gel.

Well we all should know that Beasley isn't going anywhere, since it's been mentioned that they see Beasley as apart of the future.
Walker has been more timely than consistent if anything.I still like his game though, and I'm sure the Heat love his blue collar approach to the game.
I think they end up keeping both players, but if an odd man were to be cut out it would definitely be Walker, most likely to sign a big man, like McGee.

Re: Roster Choices - Walker/Beasley 10 days - What do we do?
Beas needs a little more guidance on his shots... and he needs to do simple things like shot clock awareness and cool it on the fouls. But he is a guy who can go off, and creates mismatches
Walker has a lot of good qualities, the only thing bad is his shooting. ever since he got that eye cut he has been bad. At first I thought okay his eye is bothering him, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. But its been too long now, it should be fine... but it isnt. Now he seems to have toned down the shooting, he looks to drive. A lot of good things happen when he drives, and SOME bad...
he has had some good defensive plays, he fights out there. Takes charges too.
I dont think he's going anywhere, he is already starting and plays a ton of minutes. This team likes gritty people even if they dont shoot. He needs to make his wide open 3's though damn...

First step in making wide open 3's is taking them. Walker passes by many beautiful shots. Sometimes it hurts us. If he doesn't stay, it's because he isn't taking advantage of his chance. I do like his defense though. He's been good at the right times.

Won't be too hard to integrate if we pull someone from our D league team

Birch or Mullens would do well.
I'd really like to get Quincy Miller though. I hope Detroit slips up. This is his 3rd year in the NBA. I would choose Miller over both Birch and Mullens, even though I like them a lot.
JaVale McGee's statistics are pretty dreadful:

I know we would use him as just a backup center, but I can't see him adding much in the playoffs. In this case, maybe it would be better to bring in Mullens or Birch.

Although Beas wasn't playing much tonite, I like the fact he begins taking care of the rock. He has 1 assist and 0 turnover in 14 minutes of play.

That's true. Can't say I've ever seen our D-League team play but presuming it's gotta be Birch or Mullens because we desperately need a big if we were to make a change.

Keep them both. Walker won't be here next season imo but this season we have a shortage of useable guys due to injury and we let the DPE expire so we're better off keeping him for this season.

Keep both. Feel like we're forming an identity. I like Walkers defense and toughness. He's a key contributor, hopefully his 3 point percentage comes up.

Keep both. Beasley looks like he might turn it around and is playing really well. Walker is a tough guy, he defends, hustles and if he starts hitting his threes, he will be an amazing contributor off the bench - and keeping him will keep Beas happy.

Walker is playing smart, he's a bit more then just a shooter. He defends well, he uses the pump fake well to either go to the rim or dish out to an open guy, he's a pro that plays hard and smart.
He should stay.
He should stay.
