Why Does the NBA Allow Flopping?
We have a lot of smart fans on here. I just don't get why the NBA doesn't stop flopping. It would be SO easy-review games, hand out fines, then suspensions for cheating (it is a form of cheating) and it would stop within a month. I honestly can't figure out why the NBA doesn't stop it-you could say it helps stars, but a huge chunk of the league does it. Simple plan:
1-Fine-$10,000 to player that goes to an urban theater group in that city-great PR
2-Fine-$50,000 to team, same urban theater
3-1 game suspension-player's salary AND matching amount from team to theater group
It is a HUGE stain on the league to have the best players flopping around. JB and Noah do it for us, Niko too. Every team has floppers-why allow it?

Re: Why Does the NBA Allow Flopping?
The NBA will penalize floppers this season, fining players for repeated violations of an act a league official said Wednesday has "no place in our game."
Those exaggerated falls to the floor may fool the referees and fans during the game, but officials at league headquarters plan to take a look for themselves afterward.
Players will get a warning the first time, then be fined $5,000 for a second violation. The fines increase to $10,000 for a third offense, $15,000 for a fourth and $30,000 the fifth time. Six or more could lead to a suspension.
"Flops have no place in our game -they either fool referees into calling undeserved fouls or fool fans into thinking the referees missed a foul call," vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson said in a statement. "Accordingly, both the Board of Governors and the competition committee felt strongly that any player who the league determines, following video review, to have committed a flop should - after a warning - be given an automatic penalty."
Violation 1: Warning
Violation 2: $5,000 fine
Violation 3: $10,000 fine
Violation 4: $15,000 fine
Violation 5: $30,000 fine
Once a pickle, never a cucumber again.

Re: Why Does the NBA Allow Flopping?
It's hard to balance the priority of the league to protect their players against limiting flopping. If you penalize flopping too much, hard fouls would happen more often because of higher tolerance on what a foul is. I don't think we will see anymore stricter rules on this.

Re: Why Does the NBA Allow Flopping?
Flops should count as technical fouls, they have a replay center so it shouldn't be any problem to catch them during games. Still, prolly that bitch lebron wouldn't get called on them, but my is guess it would make Houston/Harden games more watchable.

Re: Why Does the NBA Allow Flopping?
The fines are there, and the best players will pay them happily if they can steal a game and advance in the playoffs. $10k fine for Lebron? Whatever.
It's like saying speeding tickets will stop billionaires from speeding in their Bentleys.
As for suspension, the board simply won't go for this. The board = the owners, the owners care about putting a good product out there which means their stars play, period.
And some will say the punishment is excessive. Flopping affects 1 possession, a suspension affects roughly 90 possessions = 1 game.

Re: Why Does the NBA Allow Flopping?
That's why I would have suspensions. The players would stop QUICKLY-flopping is cheating and it must be embarrassing for the league. The fines would also be paid by owners too-since a coach should bench a guy who flops (a guy who openly cheats).
I might just be getting old, but I HATE seeing guys flop their heads and arms around-play like men, I say (I doubt the WNBA has flopping). I would not do replays during games-too many stoppages already. But video review (former ref and former player review games-hand out fines/suspensions if they both agree) and next game fines/suspensions would work easily.

Re: Why Does the NBA Allow Flopping?
I am pretty ambivalent about this.
There is flopping where there is no contact and it is pure acting. Yeah...kind of sucks when that happens but I see it very rarely.
Then there is flopping where there is minimal contact and the player sells it by flailing their arms; or in the case of a charge falling over, sliding backward three feet, clutching their head or chest or leg, looking at their hands as if to search for blood, forcing tears to stream out of their eyes, waiting for 3 teammates to come pick them up and then hobbling down the court. As ridiculous as it is to watch, if there was contact then it is a foul and selling it is really no different than screaming "hey that was a foul". I mean, we have a guy named Gasol who does the flailing of arms thing 3 or 4 times a game. So after the game is reviewed does he miss the next 3 or 4 games?

They try to stop it, but truth is flopping is part of the game.Example is when players take a charge, most of the time its a flop. Some sneaky smarter players use that to their advantage and fool refs. Its not necessarily bad, only the ones that over do it should get punished.

Re: Why Does the NBA Allow Flopping?
Again, I argue if they really enforced some harsh penalties, it would stop right away. Players would adjust quickly. But I still don't understand why Silver doesn't take a firm stand. What are the players going to do, rebel against not allowing them to cheat? It would be a story for a few weeks, a few players with big fines, and it would stop within a season.

Re: Why Does the NBA Allow Flopping?
I like the 1st Fine- 10K idea...
I'll add that the head coach is responsible for paying double the players amount for all fines.
Bet that stops it...

I don't necessary think it is that NBA allow flopping, instead I think NBA is just be soft and disallow any physical contact toward stars which result start players take advantage of this situation.

Re: Why Does the NBA Allow Flopping?
IMO flopping should lead to an automatic suspension, including in the playoffs. If one is to flop in the playoffs and that team has no further games to be played, their suspension should count for the following regular season and their next post-season game.
Automatic suspensions would put an end to it.
First offense = one game suspension
Second offense = two game suspension
Etc

Flopping by the refs will only be taken seriously when a major player is taken out at the knees because some idiot knows the refs in the game isn't calling it. All it will take is for a Rose or LeBron to suffer a serious knee injury because a scrub flopped right into the Star player. The league fining players have taken the onus off of the refs in-game and allowed for this behavior to continue.

With the euro step being utilized more and more it's hard to determine traveling in real-time. Flopping however is real easy to determine. Since the league does the fining, refs turn a blind eye to the action on the court. I thought it was supposed to be a technical and the ball to the other team, but I guess that went out the window with hanging on the rim. Like I said, the minute a Star player is injured by a flopper, then and only then will it be taken serious by the league's and enforced in-game.

If they took flopping seriously, a guy like LeBron would miss half the season and the NBA/Networks don't want that/won't have that.

Traveling in the NBA make me feel sick, it's uncomfortable to watch, it hurts my feelings.
