Was just about to post this but it's really meaningless, only a partial guarantee for next year, basically just locks him up for our summer league squad.

Lol WTF, we haven't even played him at all yet. Not that I'm against it though because he's still young and nice to have him locked up.

Not much money, but I don't know why SVG "locks up" guys bouncing around waiver wires and the D-league. This just seems like another Martin or Gray signing.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Players 13-15 on your roster will never see much/any time anyway. So I feel those guys should always be young/cheap guys you can possibly develop in the D-League. A deal like this lets the Pistons do that while keeping other teams away from him.

If he just signed a free agent contract with Grand Rapids, any other NBA team could sign him at any time. But with this deal in place the Pistons can send him to GR and if he blows up nobody can touch him and they can bring him back to the big team.

Meh - it's only partially guaranteed. Not a big deal either way. Hopefully they give him a look, because out current rotation at the 3 has been brutal.

Well he's here to be a stretch 4, too slow to play the 3.

Kind of shocking. Was he playing well in the D-League for us or something?

^More likely Stan likes what he sees in practices with him and/or getting good reports from the development coaches in side work he does. Might as well give the kid some stability and see what he does with it. I like the partial guarantee 2-yr deal because if he puts the work in in the off-season and then shows anything in the summer league and camp than we can keep him cheaply, if he doesn't we cut him loose. No risk with potential for high reward IMO. Kid has skills, and now that Stan controls him for ROS and potentially next season we can have him focus solely on being a stretch four and maybe trying to bulk up as much as he can in the off-season rather than looking for a job and potentially trying to be both a SF and PF. Also there could be a handshake deal in the partial guarantee - since he'll be in camp with us, we can designate him straight to GR Drive if we don't pick up the option next season, since it's a partial guarantee he'll get some buyout money making his stint in the D-League and the $25K salary more reasonable to opt for D-League over Europe or whatever.

Zero risk and potential high reward.

The guy has physical tools to potentially play both positions at the 3 and 4. His length will be bothersome.

SVG learned his lesson from Covington.

SVG has been a lot more decisive since losing Covington and watching him blossom as the perfect stretch 3 we needed, for someone else
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

^Covington was never ours. He was a FA that Philly almost signed in the off-season but they couldn't reach an agreement, but Covington was eventually signed after maybe one DL game. And 10-day contracts were not available until January, and we had a 15 man roster and I don't think Stan was willing to cut Mitchell without getting some look at him in the season.

We should be doing more of these D-League tryouts anyways.

Something along the lines of "another man's trash is another's treasure" etc etc. There are some hidden gems to be had.

Hell, Whiteside bounced team after team and I think even a Euro team before landing on the Heat and he's considered untouchable by them now.

If this the plan, then cut him now. Guy makes Tay look ripped. Stretch 4's actually have to be able to guard the position.

He's about 6'10 220lbs and I believe he's still younger than Prince when he was drafted

He's listed at 6'9" 210. Prince is 6'9" 215. He's not strong enough to play 4 consistently. If he's not quick enough to guard 3's, he not going to make it.
