Mark Turgeon achieved something neither Gary Williams nor Lefty Driesell ever did at UMCP.

Lincoln , Neb. (AP) -- Maryland coach Mark Turgeon told his players early in the week that they would impress the NCAA Tournament selection committee if they could win their last two road games.

On Saturday he told them that if they beat Nebraska on Sunday night, they would set the school record for wins in a regular season.

The coach's motivational talks must have helped, because the 10th-ranked Terrapins were pushed to the limit before getting out of Lincoln with a 64-61 win.

''This team, I've always thought we could do anything. Twenty-six wins, I knew we'd get it as long as we played our game,'' Trimble said. ''Coach Turgeon told us we were on the way to breaking the school record. Once he told us that, we really wanted it.''

Regular season-ending road wins at Rutgers and Nebraska gave Maryland a 5-4 Big Ten road record, and the Terps also had a December win at Oklahoma State.

''They say we're a 3, 4 or 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament,'' Turgeon said. ''The committee likes road wins. We had two chances to get road wins this week, and our guys took advantage of it.''

This is not the most talented Terps team. It is the best in terms of winning close games that I have ever seen.

Another strong game for Dez Wells. He had18 points, 12 rebounds, and hit a clutch shot late in the game. His dunks are Sports Center highlight regularity now.

I believe Wells is a 1st round talent. Mark Turgeon says he is.

Turgeon also coached Kris Middleton.

Turge has done a great job with this team, but if they were in the ACC, they'd probably be around 5 or 6. The Big 10 is down and fortunately for Maryland, they've taken advantage. I've been a fan since the mid-seventies and enjoy watching this team, but what they do have is two closers in Wells and Trimble. They play pretty good team defense and while their big men stink offensively, at least they have length and guile.

To be honest thouogh - those last 2 wins were against teams with losing records - not just in the conference, and both were closer than I would have expected. Still every road win is a good win. And I concur with the comments that Cekovsky showed improvement. He's actually a pretty good athlete for a 7 footer. He just needs to relax and focus at the same time. Congrats Terps! Keep up the winning.

Terps Commit Cowan Leads St. John's to D.C. Title

Maryland junior point guard commit Anthony Cowan led St. John’s (DC) to the DCSAA title on Tuesday night, defeating the WCAC champions, Gonzaga, 74-66.

St. John's, who entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed, defeated Wilson and H.D. Woodson in the quarterfinals and semis before Cowan’s 22 points helped them takedown Gonzaga in the championship game.

Cowan averaged over 20 points per game in the tournament, which pitted the top 12 teams from D.C., public or private, against each other in a postseason setting.

St. John’s, which is also in the WCAC with Gonzaga, lost in the semifinals of the conference tournament to DeMatha back in February. Gonzaga then defeated the Stags, 77-68, in overtime of the championship game.

DeMatha also won a title today, as it defeated Mount Carmel, 64-51, in the Maryland Private Schools Championship. Junior guard Markelle Fultz, a top Terps target, took home MVP honors.

Cowan is rated No. 73 in the 247Sports class of 2016 rankings and seems to only be boosting his stock as of late as AAU season quickly approaches.

High school basketball, however, is not quite finished yet. St. John’s -- along with DeMatha, Gonzaga, Mount Carmel, Calvert Hall, Paul VI, John Carroll and Bishop Walsh -- will compete for the Alhambra Catholic Invitational Title beginning March 12th in Cumberland, Md.

Ulmer Getting His Shot in Spring Practice

Speed kills in college football. And it's one thing Maryland wide receiver Will Ulmer has a lot of.

Ulmer began his career at Maryland as a quarterback last year after playing under center in a run-heavy scheme at St. John’s (D.C), but willingly made the switch to receiver after fall camp ended.

“It was the the best decision for me going forward in my future,” Ulmer said after spring practice on Monday, as he recalled the move. “As camp was going on, I just thought it was a better fit for me. I can do more things at wide receiver [while] I’m limited at quarterback in college because in the NFL they’re looking for more prototypical quarterbacks, quarterbacks that will throw a lot. I think it was the best decision, me and coach sat down and made that final after camp.”

Ulmer didn’t end up playing as a freshman, so this will be his redshirt freshman year. He spent most of last fall trying to get the playbook down and studying receivers like Deon Long and Stefon Diggs, both currently in the process of preparing for the NFL.

Unlike some quarterbacks who make the transition to wide receiver, Ulmer didn’t benefit from knowing the entire playbook going in, because he was still new to the program and learned mostly zone-read plays during his first camp. So last year boiled down to a learning process for him. So far, the first week of spring practice, Ulmer has been given ample opportunity to show what he can do

Layman needs to shut up and step up. He's missing a lot of easy shots. He's clearly the 3rd guy behind Trimble and Wells in the Terps pecking order.

Smo and Layman playing together means no interior defense and no rebounding.

Ruzious, you beat me to it.

Layman disappointed the heck out of me. He and Smotryz were flat-footed on defense. They caused two or three of Dodd's fouls by failing to cover their man. Their defense was lousy. Dodd fouled trying to stop guys at the rim who Layman and Smotryz should have been checking.

One of them took a horrible 10 ft shot--neither Wells nor Trimble touched the ball, and nobody was in position to rebound. That quick shot and miss led to the break away and subsequent flagrant foul, yet another dumb play. I am glad Smotryz will graduate. He is not a good player.

Aside from that, it was a sweet first half. It's hard to beat the same team three straight.

I hope the Spartans end up in Maryland’s bracket. Despite the loss I think Maryland is the better team.

Maryland was due to lose. I don't blame it on Smot, because he sucks. He's got no talent and shouldn't be playing meaningful minutes. Turge got a lot from a team this year with no post play. Dodd is a clumsy foul machine, Cekovsky is green as grass and Graham is undersized with not great hands. Layman is really a small forward he moved to the 4 because he had no other choice. He's weak but my bigger problem with Layman is he has no game. No dribble drive. No real post up unless he plays the 3 and his jump shot has left him. He's the bigger disappointment than Smot, who has no athletic ability. At least he tries and has heart. Layman has none.

As for this team, they'll go as far as Wells can take them. As good as Trimble is, if he's not getting the calls going to the basket, he can't explode by or over people. He's more quick than fast. Love him but the more you see him, the more you see the weaknesses (defense). I've probably watched him 20 times this year. Wells has impressed me but he's not a great shooter. When teams take away the drive and Izzo is a great coach, he's not as effective.

But as a fan for 40 years, I'm hopeful that this team can get a good draw and get to the Sweet 16. That would be fine for a team with a hole in the middle. That will change next year with Robert Carter coming in from Georgia Tech. He's a beast and that will open up for Trimble, Nickens, Wiley and Layman.
