Who is Detroit's competition for Reggie Jackson?

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Sat Mar 14, 2015 7:36 pm

Here are the only teams I see as not having a point under contract for next season that would preclude them from pursuing Jackson

New York
Dallas
Houston
Miami
LA Lakers

Here are the other highest rated free agent point guards (some restricted, some not)

Dragic
Knight
Rondo
Beverly

I'm not seeing a lot of demand in relation to supply here.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I see New York, maybe Brooklyn since they were eager to trade for him, and Lakers being in on the RJ sweepstakes.

They can have him sure.

Brooklyn won't have the cap space. I'm not too sure Reggie really fits the triangle offense all that well for NY to really be interested either. Miami will keep Dragic. Rondo will go to one of LAL or Dallas, Knight is an RFA and PHX will keep him.

I think Jackson is back here, almost surely. If we wanted to play hardball, I bet he could be kept for $9-10M/season not the 12+ he wants.

Does he have the balls to play hard ball and take the QO?

^I don't think so. Doesn't seem it will get anywhere near that though either by the way both sides are talking publicly about it. But it comes down to starting jobs - if he took the QO with the intent on being a UFA the boom cap year - there is still only 30 starting PG spots across the league, unless he is promised one by Brooklyn or something while visiting teams as a free agent this off-season.

I agree, but our former GM proved you can bid against yourself.

Assuming we sign Reggie, these teams are potential trade partners for Jennings.

Currently- nobody. No team is going to trade for someone healing from an achillies injury on an expiring contract.

Probably no one seeing how Reggie Jackson is a bust as the premiere point guard role. I don't care what the stats say. THose stats need to translate into wins.

There will always be desperate GMs, hopefully one gives RJ a big contract that we don't match. I wouldn't mind him on a cheap deal to come off the bench but sadly his ego wouldn't allow that and we cant risk poisoning the locker room.

Jackson's case is like Lance Stephensons, he was vastly overrated because of the role he played on a contending team- taken out of that limited role and given an expanded one on a lesser team and he gets exposed. Same thing happens with Draymond if he leaves GSW.

At this rate I don't want him back if it's gonna cost over 10 mill a year but we do got a good backup in dinwiddie I thought Reggie was gonna be our pgotf but my view on him changed

No team is going to throw a large offer to Reggie if they've been paying attention. They will offer him low enough that Detroit will probably match without much concern.

If he's expecting to get over 11mil+ per year, then he's going to be sorely disappointed. And it'll be even sadder when we decide to match that.

He was offered 12M for a back up role on a contending team and turned it down

No chance in hell he takes anything less than 10M and some idiotic desperate GM will definitely offer more than 10M

They can have him then. Jennings is making 8.3 mil and is a better overall player than him.

He's not even worth the paper his rookie contract is printed on. I'm going to be disappointed even if we re-sign him for cheap

If SVG resigns him he will be making a big mistake. He wouldn't even accept a 6th man role on a legitimate contender, so don't think for a second he'll accept coming off the bench here. Middleton/Monroe/Draymond/Harris/Danny Green/Wes Matthews/Carroll...that's who we should be going after. Not a guy who gets outplayed and out hustled by a rookie. SVG the coach is great. SVG the executive should try to avoid saying things like "this isn't a tryout" or "you're my point guard" in reference to someone who is not proven in this league.

And this is not based solely on the last 11 games either. His play is not much different than when he started at point in OKC earlier in the year(good looking raw numbers, terrible efficiency and empty stats in a losing effort), and the past 11 games have only reinforced that.

It's a question of what he's offered, not what he'll take.
