Drummond?

Post#1 » by GooseDiddy » Sun Mar 15, 2015 3:54 pm

Would Andre Drummond and Brandon Jennings be enough to get the Lakers and Rockets 1st rd. picks?

Would taking back Swaggy's salary help or hurt?

Would throwing in Caron Butler help or hurt?

The real question is why should either team do that? I think the Lakers are better off keeping our picks.

Okay, let's say for the sake of conversation then, that the trade is Drummond and Jennings for Swaggy, Lakers 1st and Rockets 1st.

Let's also assume that the Pistons are able to re-sign Monroe since they have his bird rights and can offer him an extra year.

Lakers do it because Kobe only has 1 year left on his deal, so this very well may be his last championship or bust season. Lakers brass will want to put as much around him as possible without sacrificing 2016 cap space. Hill, Sacre, and Clarkson are all team options for 15/16, so I'll let Lakers fans decide if they stay. Davis is a player option and he might try to test free agency, but I'll let you make whatever assumption you like there too. Lakers become

Jennings/(Clarkson)
Kobe
??
Randle/Kelly/(Davis)
Drummond/(Hill)/(Sacre)

Granted, the Lakers will have a lot of roster spots to fill, but that's a nice start to a last run roster, that would only have Randle's team option on the books going into 16/17. Without looking too far into the future Drummond and KD would look nice in the purple and gold on max deals once the Kobe era is over...

Detroit does it because while Drummond is a better athlete, Monroe is the better passer out of the paint and fits Stan Van's inside-out offense better. The twin towers look hasn't worked and it's time to make a choice. Plus Detroit get's the honor of paying Josh Smith $14M/yr in 15/16 and 16/17, and Reggie Jackson will need to get paid this summer.

Pistons become
Jackson/Dinwiddie
KCP/Meeks
Young/Butler
Tolliver/C Mart
Monroe

Not a very intimidating roster, but add 3 1st rd. picks to the mix and you might end up with a competitor. The young cheap talent helps fans ignore the fact that our highest paid player plays PF for the Rockets...

Because you don't have a point guard, because he's an expiring deal, because he grew up in Compton, because he's in love with Kobe, because you were calling the Pistons about him 2 months ago...

Having him isn't going to make a bit of difference in our need for a point guard. Not at all interested in having a Nick Young player at PG.

So essentially you'd rather have Emannuel Mudiay and Trey Lyles then Drummond and Jennings. That's fine if it's what you prefer. I just think if Kobe is going to take one last shot at it, he'll want proven players with him.

He's also coming off and injury that will sap whatever speed he once had and those calls were before he got injured. Him being a hometown kid is irrelevant. Secondly why would the Lakers be fools and trade their 1st and the Rocket 1st to Detroit ? How in the hell does this help the Lakers ? Do you realize this is a flat out stupid idea to even think or ask this fan base ?

Did you ask yourself these questions before posting this idea ? My guess is no, because when these types of questions are asked it clearly shows you're only thinking in terms of improving your teams situation and have no regard to the other. The team you propose is no better than what they're running out on the floor now. A Drummond and Jennings and the scraps we have now ISN'T going to improve the team.

Well, that's why the original post was a question. That's how questions work. The first answer I got was "yes" by the way.

Yes, I'd rather have two cheap players on rookie contracts with promise than two overpaid players demanding near max money and destroying our cap space and any possibility of competing for a championship during the duration of their stay. As for what Kobe wants? Well he'll be a 37 year old player coming off three season ending injuries commanding 25 million for his last year on the team. He's hardly the person i'd be looking to for advice on how to build a championship team around him which would be an impossible feat to begin with.

The Pistons do not have Monroe's Bird rights (nor RFA rights) They will have cap room (asome) I seriously doubt the Pistons deal Drummond for just a pick.. assuming it's not top 2. Lakers still need to HAVE their pick. Jennings? Hard to say. A pick in the 20's .. is decent. Jennings is okay.. not your dream PG. I suspect Lakers use the picks they haver.. use cap $ to get FA's.. see what that becomes while looking to have some cap$ a year later to really try to rise. Going after Monroe as a FA is more likely an agenda.

Nothing short of KD is getting those picks. And assuming LBJ is out of the question, nothing short of KD is giving Kobe even a remote shot at a 6th ring. We'll likely put a good offer on the table for Monroe this summer, though.

The Lakers are going to be offering full max to just about every decent FA this off season, including Restricted FAs...

Now's the time for that. They won't all say no either. Not sure if it'll be Monroe, but just to set the table for what will be happening, so other teams can accurately evaluate their ability to keep some of these guys.

The Lakers aren't winning Bryant one last ring with those two. They are young and immature. I wouldn't tell you not to do it, just think that it's fit your future, but your present. The Kobe era is over.
