FC: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

If you don’t like MKG, you probably leave your dog’s poop on the sidewalk, stand on the left side of escalators, and play your iPod so loudly on the subway that we can all hear the terrible music you like. That is to say, if you don’t like MKG, I question your basic human values.

He’s another Mirror Guy, only with even more in-your-jersey ferociousness. He wants to be the greatest defender in NBA history. That’s his goal — not to score 20 per game or make 10 All-Star teams, but to be the best defender ever. How can you not root for that? The Hornets saved their season by buckling down on defense in January when Al Jefferson got hurt, and MKG has kept them humming on that end since.

And he never stops competing, to the point where you almost worry for his physical health. He rebounds on both ends like a power forward, and the Hornets have used him a bit there with Al Jefferson hurt again. He is a superhuman transition defender, chasing plays on which others would quit:

He also has Hendo as a bench player on his team.

who, by the way, with his Indiana stint noted, is having a nice year in Boston. his cool off-the-dribble bounce and trickery has worked this season. there just aren't that many situations in which "a lot of Evan Turner touches" and his lack of three-point shooting will reach its ceiling.

I would have never expected to see Hendo on this list, but I am happy for him. He's had a quiet good year. Zach is right on the money talking about Hendo as the throwback 1980s guard, something we talk about all the time.

That being said, just reading about MKG and Hendo and the spacing issues they create when playing together just reinforces the notion that we have to bring in a 3pt shooter next to MKG. It has to be a top priority this summer. That might require Cho to trade off the defensive, non-shooting wings, so that Clifford isn't trying to play them - ie Hendo and Lance.

Which is a pretty lowly position for a great franchise such as Boston.

I'd say considering the expectations, trades made to clear out vers, youth in the lineup, and the treasure chest of future picks owned, that Boston is having a fantastic year.

Boston's expectations are always championships, so by their own standards this season is hardly nice.

Their rebuild is exceptional and it is an achievement to be in the PO seeds at this point but I hardly see Ainge celebrating being a low seed out east and I doubt they make it.

They made some great trades including the ballsy trade of rondo and like Detroit casting aside Josh Smith, I believe it has improved their chemistry (if not talent)

The picks have nothing to do with this season, although the amount of picks they have are extremely valuable and are indicative of Ainge being the great GM he is.

Being ahead of us in the standings is nothing of note imo.

I don't really agree with this way of thinking, It's like NBA broadcasts using all-time head-to-head stats (Team X is 79-55 against Team Y) between teams as something indicative as if there are more than two players on each team that were three years ago.

I consider the narrative of "they are only about championships" to be meant for particular spoiled fan-bases or mainstream media talking heads. Yeah, in some cases it might have an effect when judging each team's front office strategy. It certainly is relevant when talking about, let's say, what the Lakers future plans are. Or the same goes for Danny Ainge's plans.

But if we're here talking basketball as intelligent basketball fans I don't see the relevancy for it. In my opinion, the relevant factor here is that Boston entered the season with a lot of rotation players and tier B talent and they have squeezed the most out of that squad. I don't think Bill Russell's or Larry Bird's success should be taken into account when grading Boston's season.

And I understand that your view on things included the fact that Ainge is thinking about contending in 2019, not finishing 8th in 2015. But your take seemed to be too "Celtics are only about championships"-heavy. I don't think you can dismiss this season just based on it.

I loved your initial joke though.

Cheers Lamar, good post but we'll have to agree to disagree on this one, respectfully of course.

The way I see it, is that if we started the season with a bunch of rotation players and tier B players and squeezed into the playoffs then it would be a success for us.

Squeezing into the playoffs for Boston is hardly anything of note for that franchise, I cannot see that franchise celebrating being a low seed out east.

Yes they would have surpassed many fans expectations but I highly doubt they have surpassed their own.

Internally I doubt they are ahead of where they thought they would be at this point in time.

Success is a funny thing and holds a certain standard imo.

The joke is who isn't having a nice season for Boston and I answered Boston, this is true imo.
