Monroe replacement

Post#1 » by aad » Fri Mar 20, 2015 7:43 pm

Let's all be honest we know Monroe is gone there is no way he took the QO just to resign so my question is looking at all the free agents only milsap and green and Kevin love are stretch fours but neither is coming here so who will replace him and please don't say tolliver

Door A - Karl-Anthony Towns
Door B - Draymond Green
Door C - "screw it, let's just suck"

If Greg leaves, which is likely, Pistons likely have to get a PF and a backup C.

These are the realistic free agent options to replace Monroe

PF: Jeff Green (really a 3 but this board is obsessed with stretch 4s sooo....), Brandon Bass, Kevin Seraphin, Amir Johnson, Derrick Williams, Thomas Robinson, Thad Young, Ed Davis, Teletovic, Scola

C: Bargnani, Ajinca, Koufas, Aldrich, Perkins, O'Quin

The only other option I can think of is trading raw cap for Gallo- should Denver still want to rebuild- but even then- Gallo is a considerable worse defender than Monroe and is made of glass. If we are being realistic, we are in a world of hurt without Monroe.

That said, I do think that SVG and co realize that losing Greg would be a huge set back and open up their check books. Whether or not Monroe turns down a 5/80 when the closest competitor can only offer 4/64 remains to be seen. Monroe has recently been interviewed saying that he wants to be an all star and make the playoffs, but I wonder if he's willing to take a paycut to go join ADavis in his home town.

Door A looks out of reach, Door B...Hell naw. I pick door C we already suck might as well be the absolute worst and get some good picks. Isn't Thon Maker gonna play in college next season?

Yes, but he's not exactly viewed as the game changing prospect he was a couple of years ago.

Even with the cap space, it's going to be very hard replacing Monroes production at starting PF and back up C AND get a legit starting SF.
It's going to suck if (when) Monroe leaves.

You could probably build a playoff team out of the young guys we gave up on

Carroll and Middleton should be the main targets for SVG this summer. I know Middleton is ridiculously unlikely (thanks Joe), but Carroll could probably be had. Imagine if we got those three and lucked into Russell. I wouldn't even care about where Jackson and Monroe would want to go.

Russell/Jennings/Dinwiddie
KCP/Meeks
Middleton/Carroll/KCP
Carroll/Tolliver
Drummond/backup C (Koufos?)

I'd take it.

Could a S&T Monroe land us Jrue Holiday and Ryan Anderson?

It's said he's going to opt out, but if he opts in he might be able to get more money with the cap rising the following year, yeah ... :? right?

1. TOWNS
(pipe dream but could actually happen. countdown to a championship would start)
2. HARRIS
(most realistic, would pretty much be a one-to-one replacement but better shooter. I don't really see him as a 3 anyway)
3. PORZINGIS
(could happen if he wows Stan in workout. would be next best to Towns because of his length and shooting)
4. PORTIS
(would fit perfect, he can shoot, defend the perimeter, and will get better in the paint as he gets stronger)
5. LOVE
(pipe dream but more realistic than Draymond, especially if he continues to be a 5th option and they don't get a championship)
6. LOONEY (i'm high on looney but probably next year. He's not aggressive enough as a scorer yet)

Draymond Green is unrealistic, I don't think hes leaving a borderline championship team whether they win or not. Only way he's leaving is if Steph Curry breaks his leg off.

If I was the Pistons I would draft an SF (Johnson/Winslow/Oubre), then if Monroe leaves I would sign & trade for a PF rookie (Towns, Kristaps, Portis) and also go after Harris or Love. No thanks to anyone over age 26.

and Joel Anthony is fine as a backup Center
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!
