Hawes???

Post#1 » by devinbrady » Thu Mar 19, 2015 9:04 pm

I have to admit going into the season I thought Hawes was a steel. So far it has been a disaster, and I am not sure if it is his fault. In last nights game he got the ball in the post against a non shot blocker and he got off a great shot that went in. That was the first and last touch he got in the paint. He has a great feel around the basket. With the bench as bad as it is why dont they get him the ball more down low against poor defensive players? Makes me crazy to see Rivers, Davis, or Robinson take terrible desperation shots at the end of the clock when they have a distinct advantage down low.

i agree with trying to get him the ball in the post more, but he was brought in to stretch the floor and has done a terrible job at that.

His defense is what really hurts. He is so so bad on defense.

it pains me to watch him play. I had great hopes when he was signed. I had not watched him play much and thought he would be a big help however he has been a big disappointment. i would also like to add that Austin rivers is a bigger problem. unless they improve a great deal we will not go to the second round. our bench is unacceptable.

The difference between last year and this year has been night and day. I watched alot of 76ers games last year and he was a completely different player.

Hawes might have just been really hot last season.

07-08 to 12-13:
31.5% 3PT / 0.9 3PA

13-14:
41.6% 3PT / 3.9 3PA

14-15:
31.6% 3PT / 2.6 3PA

Maybe Hawes was never really a high 30's / low 40's 3PT shooting big man like last year would have had us believe. It really was only a one year sample, but with 308 attempts last season compared to 359 attempts his first 6 seasons, it seemed like a progression in shooting ability especially couple with being a high 70% FT shooter for the last 3 seasons.

It's definitely quite weird. Defensively the system is also a chore for him because it requires a lot more mobility than he is capable of.

I thought the Clips should have gone after Kaman in the off season. He is an effective big man off the bench and would have signed for a cheaper contract than Hawes too. What a big mistake on Doc's part.

In hindsight, Kaman would have been a better option, but he signed for a similar amount. That said, Kaman has his flaws also as a highly turnover prone and not very efficient offensive big man. I'm assuming the FO was a little worried about the spacing. Kaman can shoot short mid-range jumpers, but doesn't really space the defense out. I'm assuming they also didn't believe they could play Kaman and DJ together while they felt they could do so with Hawes. Kaman wasn't very too happy with the Clippers after his departure anyways, so I'm not sure if that was even a real option.

Portland doesn't play a defense that extends out and makes their big men have to move. Their bigs stay back on the pick and roll and they are content giving up open to decently contested mid-range shots to prevent drives and corner three's. Kaman might not look so hot in Doc's defensive system, similar to Hawes because it won't really be suited to his physical abilities.

Ed Davis would have been good based on how this team plays defense, but specifically after the Hawes signing, the Lakers option for minutes was more attractive.

Again in hindsight, something like Shaun Livingston + Ed Davis, two guys many of us wanted would have been nice. Actually even just Pierce and then Ed Davis with the BAE (got minimum from Lakers) would have been good.

Yup, he was considered a bargain at the contract he got. A guy at his size shooting 40%+ 3PT on good volume and also averaging about 9 rebs/36 is not a common thing. We just didn't all expect there to be zero sustainability of that shooting efficiency.

The part the FO should have been more in tune with though was how they planned on using him defensively. Using him like Blake and DJ defensively has also magnified his faults as a player on defense. I'm still quite mind boggled as to how they thought Hawes was going to be able to effectively hedge all the way out beyond the three point line and recover effectively over and over again.

I do not blame doc on this one. hawes has just not got the job done. his defense has been the biggest problem. my concern now is jamal. we need him so Austin will be on the bench.

Yes, Hawes put up good numbers last season on bad teams. I know this is very subjective, but he never passed the "eye ball test" when I watched him in years past. I'm not just saying this now because it hasn't panned out, but I questioned the signing at the time.

With Hawes being essentially useless, is it time to *gulp*, rethink the Javale McGee situation?

huge red flag to me that he doesnt have a job.

talented enough to be on anybody's radar but no job.
Maybe one of these insiders will lettuce know what the word on him is around the league. Cant be good if a big that athletic can't get picked up.

It does make you wonder because otherwise it would be a no brainer to sign him. Also, maybe people are worried that he hasn't recovered fully from the injuries he had earlier this season.

It's not like Hawes would have a job right now if he wasn't currently wasting one of our roster spots. Same goes for Austin, really.

Yup, definitely. He did have the thing with Boston, but he doesn't want anything longer than this season. It's definitely a red flag, but hey. Nate didn't have anything either before we signed him.

This doesn't make sense though, Miami, Portland, there were teams looking to sign Hawes, and some for even more than the Clippers gave him. He wasn't almost out of the league or something lol.

the real question is what are we going to do in the playoffs with hawes, Austin, and nate as the back ups. I see a disaster waiting to happen. I hope I am wrong.
