If we truely are in asset building for elite pieces, we should trade non-top 10 picks for future picks.
The value of Warren, Ennis, Marshall, Goodwin, Morris 6 months after they were taken was basically nothing. Imagine if you could trade 8 first round picks (hypothetically those 3 last year, 2 this year if we'd kept Lakers, 3 additional futures we traded for), that value would be through the roof, as opposed to Warren, Ennis, Bogdan etc...

Draft picks are like cars, they lose 30% the second you drive them off the lot.

I guess we did get Kieff with one of those picks but still we should trade our picks and look to pick up a guy who can help our roster strait away. We could definitely do with an upgrade at any of the 3, 4 or 5 ( 3 and 4 especially) to be honest even if Len and Kieff continue to develop.
Well, I like Warren a lot and think he is likely to be better than many taken ahead of him, so that didn't end up bothering me that much. Of course I would have rather had a handful of guys over him, but I don't know that we would have gotten that much of a better player at 6 or 7.
This year it would be nice to have a pick around 6 or 7 (and I hope that Lakers pick doesn't end up 6th). I imagine we can still get a pretty good player where we are. Most of the guys outside of the top 4 that are quality are SFs, which we seem to have quite a few of. Hezonja could play SG but we are pretty loaded at SG too. But after you get past that glut of SFs that will likely go between 6 and 12, there is really not all that much difference in the PFs or Cs available, so I don't think it matters THAT much this year, unless we had a top 3 or 4 pick.
Yes, I really like Warren too I must admit. I guess the Suns have picked pretty well there considering. Kendall Marshall wasn't a total bust either but his limitations have been exposed and he didn't play much for us. I'm from New Zealand so don't follow the college scene but I get what you're saying.
It would be disappointing if the Lakers pick does fall at 6 or 7 but thats the risk they took dealing the pick.
We have a nice youngish core but we definitely still need to add to this current offer, if we could move these picks along with other assets for a proven vet on the younger side - especially if it's in a position of need - who could make an immediate impact to our current team then I for one would be all for it.

Mr Puddles wrote:So Chad Ford has us picking R.J. Hunter right now with #14, any thoughts on him? The description is that he's a shooting guard "who's not an elite athlete, still needs to add strength and who's shot hasn't been falling " doesn't sounds too promising.
I didn't think he'd go that high. He is the kid who hit that wild buzzer beater to beat Baylor after ending the game on a 13-0 run. (not sure why this video doesn't work here but it does if you click to watch it on youtube.) His dad is the coach of that team and he fell off his rolling chair after the shot he was so excited. He was only on a rolling chair because he tore is achilles celebrating win they won their conference tourney.

I don't know if Ford thinks we need a GS or if he is just ranking guys and according to his ranking, that's who we end up with.

It depends on how confident you are in your scouting. In every draft there are players picked in the mid level that turn out to be very good. Whenever the Suns have passed up on a present pick in favor of a potential better future pick, it has turned around and bit them in the butt.
Think Chicago and the Lual Deng pick.

Why is it that some players who are very good shooters in college cannot seem to shoot well in the NBA. I am thinking Stauskas, Jimmer, Casey Jacobsen, etc.

Combination of size and the fact that defenders are quicker to close out on them, so they need to have a quick release. Salim Stoudamire too, who was better than Reddick in college.

Shooting is the most overrated skill in college, tbh.
We need frontcourt help and I think we'll have a lot of options in this draft.
But maybe this is the time for a trade up, like Spurs did with Kawhi (late 1st to lottery)

Frontcourt help has to be the priority either in the draft or free agency.

Adding okafor or towns this year would have been really nice.

I wonder what it will take to trade up in this draft. If we combine our pick with players (almost anyone on this team) we should be able to get up in to the 5-9 range. Kristaps is really intriguing.
Is he the second coming of John Salley or is he Zarko 2?

I'd definitely been keen to try and trade our 13/14th or even include a 2nd plus a player. Question is, what player would it take for another team to bite on a highish lottery pick? I'm assuming it would be too difficult to acquire a top 4 pick?

That's the problem we have. We like our players. But then in the next breath we need to upgrade just about all of them.
Tell me how many of a big 3 championship team we already have. If it's 0 then our entire team should be on the table, if we have 1-2 then we can upgrade specific positions.

I'd definitely put Bledsoe in that category but not as the alpha dog. No one else(yet) has that status imo.
100% agree with needing to address the front court first and foremost......

We still have at worst a 1 in 200 chance of being able to pick either one.

Everyone should be on the table for the right piece. Obviously most of us would like to keep Len, Warren, Goodwin but if you trade guys for a massive upgrade at a position you do it.
The problem is that you don't really want to trade youth for veteran talent, as tough as the west is.
The way to win in this league, is building through the draft. You can hope you are a premier free agent destination, but unless you can get a MAJOR star or stars like Shaq to LA, or Wade/Bosh to Miami, then building through the draft is the way to do it. Rarely a young star gets traded (Harden being the only one in recent memory). The only other guys that get traded are guys that have threatened to leave for nothing, but that is after 7-9 years....Melo, Love, Paul, Howard, etc.
The one thing we need to hope for is that McD nails the draft picks. That is why trading the LA pick hurt, but in that case he must think Knight still has plenty of upside.

If you really believe a player has superstar potential, you make a trade--even if you have to trade a player you really like.
Is Okafor a superstar? Not sure. Maybe the chances look like this.
Superstar--15%
Star player--30%
Solid nba starter--30%
Bust--25% (anything less than a starter would be a bust given where he will be picked).
Its a crap shoot one way or another.
