Sources: Jake Layman Considering NBA Draft

Maryland junior forward Jake Layman is currently in the process of gathering information and weighing his options for the NBA Draft, sources close to the situation told InsideMDSports.com

Per the source, Layman is not leaning in either direction currently and he's still in the process of receiving feedback. A decision isn't expected to be made this week. The deadline for NCAA players to pull their name out of NBA Draft consideration is April 26th this year.

The 6-foot-9, 205 pound Massachusetts native averaged 12.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game for the Terps this past season and was named a third-team all-Big Ten choice by the media. He’s ranked No. 37 overall in DraftExpress’s Top-100 board and No. 50 overall by ESPN’s Chad Ford. Both currently project him to be drafted in the second round.

Layman is expected to transition back to small forward in his senior season at Maryland due to the additions of McDonald’s All-American center Diamond Stone and former Georgia Tech big man Robert Carter if he returns. Layman played power forward almost exclusively last season for the Terps after beginning his career on the wing, his projected NBA position.

Layman started off the 2014-15 season strong, scoring in double-figures in his first 13 games leading up to conference play in January. He shot above 50 percent from the field in eight of those games. But once conference play rolled around, which coincided with the return of Dez Wells, Layman’s numbers dipped dramatically. He averaged just 10.9 points on 41.7 percent shooting in 20 games against Big Ten foes.

Scouts love Layman’s length, athleticism and shooting ability but his slender frame, ball handling ability and questionable toughness raise concerns. Layman could return next year to address those weaknesses, and possibly help the Terps make a deep NCAA Tournament run.

Nice! Quite frankly, it's inconceivable to me that Layman would get picked ahead of Trimble If they both came out. I don't blame Layman for doing his due diligence, but if he does go pro, I won't root for him. He'd basically have to hate school to go pro at this point.

Higga wrote:Yeah UMD will be a pre season top 10, maybe top 5, and favorite to win the B10. Probably gonna be the best MD team since the 01-02 team that won it all(although no Juan Dixons on this team).

Next season they may win less games. This season they won a ton of close ones.

They will be much more talented.

Trimble is a good player, and if he learns to be a better distributor he could have a good NBA career.

Maryland football: Caleb Rowe, 4 other expected starters receive medical redshirts

Eight Maryland football players, including quarterback Caleb Rowe, received NCAA medical hardship waivers, Randy Edsall announced Wednesday (per the Post). Quarterback Caleb Rowe, defensive lineman Quinton Jefferson, tight end Andrew Isaacs, outside linebacker Cavon Walker, wide receiver Taivon Jacobs, running back Albert Reid, defensive back Alvin Hill and defensive back Daniel Ezeagwu will all receive an extra year of eligibility.

Rowe has played in parts of three seasons while with Maryland, throwing 12 touchdowns against 10 interceptions in 13 games while completing 53.7 percent of his passes for 7.7 yards per attempt. He is expected to start at quarterback for the Terrapins this fall, and will now have two years of eligibility remaining.

All of this is good news, but this one's the best for Maryland -- if Rowe graduated after 2015, the quarterback picture in 2016 would have frankly been terrifying. Now with an extra year of Rowe as a cushion, there's less pressure on incoming freshmen (like four-star target Dwayne Haskins) or long-term projects (like Shane Cockerille or Gage Shaffer) to put it together immediately.

Maryland's POTENTIAL lineup:

PG: Romelo Trimble/Jaylen Brantley
SG: Damion Lee   /Dion Wiley/Jared Nickens
C: Diamond Stone/Michal Cekovsky/Damonte Dodd
SF: Jake Layman/Jared Nickens
PF: Robert Carter Jr/Ivan Bender

That team is ridiculous.

Gonna be a fun year next year in College Park.

Turgeon Plans to Spend "A Lot of Time" With Calipari This Summer

]Mark Turgeon wouldn’t mind seeing Wisconsin or Michigan State win the NCAA Tournament this weekend, which would help the Big Ten conference as a whole, especially on the recruiting trail, but he’s pulling for an old friend, John Calipari, to make history and complete the first undefeated season college basketball has seen since 1977.

“I’m a big Cal fan,” Turgeon said earlier this week on ESPN980’s The Man Cave. “I’m rooting hard for him, I hope he can do it. You know what’s crazy, [the last time] they won it, he said, ‘The next goal is 40-0.’ He kind of called it.”

Calipari began his college coaching career as an assistant at Kansas, a year before Turgeon arrived to the university as a player. His respect for him has only grown since being an 18-year old kid, watching him in recent years manage egos of future NBA players and get them to all play together as a team. This year the Wildcats are two wins away from running the table and are doing it with nine McDonald’s All-Americans on their roster.

Now, in anticipation of having a loaded roster himself next year, although not quite on Kentucky’s level, Turgeon plans to pick his former coach’s brain this offseason in order get an idea of how to create similar chemistry with a lineup expected to include Melo Trimble, Robert Carter Jr., Diamond Stone, Jake Layman and possibly another new addition. Calipari and Turgeon have remained in touch over the years, often seeing each other at AAU events in the offseason, and have stayed friends even during some heated recruiting battles (see: Harrison twins).
