ESPN Really screwed up their web site

I feel like I'm getting shafted because I'm not a mobile user and exclusively check ESPN out from my laptop.

I get it, but I'm really disappointed because I'm really just not feeling it. Aesthetically I feel like it's much much worse and a little harder to navigate. It's really designed for scrolling like on a tablet or phone, but on a computer it's an eye sore.

It's organized a little better I'll admit, but I feel like it's much worse for navigating, which negates the benefits from it being better organized. I don't like the twitter feed at the right and the fact that you can't just jump to box scores at the top. I also miss the links for the different major cities' pages at the top (Boston/New York/LA etc.), but I can see how that might not be an issue for most people that don't reside in those areas.

Overall I just feel like it looks half done. I hope this isn't the final iteration and there are more updates to come because it's seriously ugly at the moment and I feel like it can use a lot of work. I'm sure it's a nice update for mobile users, but I'm really getting shafted.

If I was grading the web designer's work he'd be getting a D from me.

Not matter what you do, people hate a site launch. 2 to 3 weeks later, nobody cares.

Add some freakn color.. I like how the ABC one has a pattern and its dark on the side... Its not blinding me.

I rarely go there, but I love this new layout. The one they had previously was so outdated. You guys don't like it because you're used to the old layout. Give it some time.

The problem is that they have geared the website towards their mobile users while making the desktop version garbage. They should have simply kept the mobile and desktop versions separate.

It's called "Responsive Web Design" where your "single" website is optimized for viewing and navigating on mobile or a browser with very little re-sizing or scrolling required. Maintaining two websites (one for mobile, one for browsers) is more of a hassle and time consuming for a large site like ESPN, even though they use the same data on the backend. Also, Google now is actually putting an emphasis on having your website "mobile-friendly" in order to get properly index by their crawlers. In other words, if your website is not "mobile-friendly" based on their standards, you'll drop on the search results.

I wish the site would "respond" to the fact that I'm on a proper PC with a mouse and keyboard and I don't need giant buttons and graphics that take up a third of the screen. I have a decent sized monitor and I'd like to have the content right there in front of me.

Yahoo NBA used to perfect, about 5-6 years ago they changed it to that ridiculous layout it has now that just has too much content. Now ESPN has done it...

And yes I agree this site has no colour, wth. Just looks like a bunch of text that I don't wish to read through unless i'm specifically looking for something.

Aside from box scores I go on ESPN for insider articles, and I hate the new layout. Articles are harder to find, as you no longer get a list of articles when scrolling over a sport, so you can't get there straight from the home page. And then the article itself only takes up about half the page, theres just way too much clutter.

realgm does it if you leave the page open too long.

I still don't use their website for much of anything. Hard to search the site now. I haven't used NBA.com in damn near over a year because of it's poor layout.
