Your Off Season White Board

Post#1 » by Mamba Venom » Wed Apr 1, 2015 11:41 pm

I thought it would be a cool topic if we put our heads together and share our off-season white boards.

Draft
1. If we get our top 5 pick go with the best player available.
2. Best player available for late 1st Houston pick.
3. Buy another draft pick. Last year we bought Jordan Clarkson!

Free Agency
1. Sign restricted agent Kawhi Leonard to a max contract. There is a 90% chance the Spurs match the offer, however, the Spurs aren't really into max contracts. Kawhi may not want to stick around San Antonio if Duncan and Manu are leaving. If the Spurs match at least they have to pay him the max. I love Kawhi's impact on the defensive end! My fav defender.
2. If we aren't tanking - release Hill. I like him OK, however, for 10 mil we should release him and get more cap space. I think we have approx 31 mil to spend if we release him after cap hold for top 5 pick.
3. If we have the opportunity to offer Love the max we have to do it. Chances are he stays in Cleveland but we have to try. If Love were in LA he may try to recruit UCLA teammate Westbrook in 2017. Give Westbrook the money we were spending on Kobe's contract.

Move I hope we do not make.
-Rondo (I can't stand poor FT shooters, his Shaq-like performance at the line is unacceptable for PGs). I would only go after Rondo on a cheap contract. Clarkson's coming out party is a reason to sign other positions.

Hope
That we end up with 3 young future all-stars in Randle, Clarkson & top 5. Think back to Eddie Jones, Nick the Quick & Ceballos. Then we can attract a major free agent or 2 and make a great trade. The return.
Lakers are 22-3 in OT last 6 seasons:Kobe best OT closer!

If we get Love, do you think we can play Randle at 3? I do, and I think it would be a defensive nightmare for opponents. He has better handles than 90% of 3s and has as quick a first step as most of them as well. He measured at 6'7.75'' 250lbs with a 7 ft wingspan.

I want to package Hou 1st and our 2nd to move higher an get Hollis-Jefferson, i'm not an pro scout or much of talent guy but from the short viewing of the ncaa tourney, I don't see why this guy doesn't have ability to match Stanley as far as being a productive NBA SF. Needs to get better at shooting the ball but he is long and athletic. However IF we're at 4th and Mudiay doesn't impress enough in camp, I would be more than thrilled if we found a way to trade back and pickup WCS and some how one of the top 5 wings, like a Winslow or a Johnson.

I'm hoping for Towns with the 1st pick  I wish he didn't became the popular choice, he was going under the radar around 4-8 when the season started in the mocks. With the late 1st and early 2nd picks, I want 2 of Tyus Jones, Upshaw, Justin Anderson, Cliff Alexander, Tyrone Wallace.

If we can't get a good wing I would love to chase Tobias Harris too. My ideal roster after the draft and no major FAs coming would be

Towns/Davis
Randle/Hill
Johnson/Anderson
Kobe/Young
Clarkson/Vet

1. Karl Towns

1. Paul Millsap
2. Goran Dragic
3. Wesley Matthews
4. Rajon Rondo
5. Greg Monroe
6. Danny Green
7. DeMarre Carroll

9. Wilson Chandler (TO)

ROLE PLAYERS (starter caliber I'd be willing to give 4-6 mil/year)

2. Jared Dudley (PO)
3. Lou Williams
4. Marco Belinelli
5. Brandon Bass
6. Tyson Chandler

Omri Caspi
Alonzo Gee
John Jenkins
Luc Mbah a Moute
Al-Farouq Aminu
Darrell Arthur
Kendrick Perkins
Greg Smith
Jason Smith
Alexis Ajinca
Ronny Price

If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say all my restricted free agents would be out, and all my max guys would be out EXCEPT for Lopez (I think he's opting out). Therefore it wouldn't be too far-fetched to think we could acquire Brook. He was born in North Hollywood, so its kind of fitting. If we remain where we are in the draft, and get the fourth pick we'd be looking at Mudiay or Russell. Lets just say we select Mudiay. Cap wise, after we give Lopez the max, we've got room for a 3-4mil guy (Ed Davis), the mini MLE (Gerald Green?) and some minimums.

PG - Jordan Clarkson / Emmanuel Mudiay
SG - Kobe Bryant / Wayne Ellington / Jabari Brown
SF - Gerald Green / Nick Young
PF - Ed Davis / Julius Randle
C - Brook Lopez / Tarik Black

With the Houston pick, I'd like to take a chance on the young Brazilian George Lucas De Paula.

I'm pretty positive that if you're a team with cap room you don't get a MLE. Once the cap room is gone you get a room exception (2.7M) and that's it.

I really don't see us picking up Hill's option. I know there's rumors out there, but I think it's much more likely we decline the option and then re-sign him after all the big fish are gone to a long term contract at a smaller cap figure. Maybe give him a 4 year extension starting around 5-6M a season, with player options on the years.

He's still very raw. I would rather take Delon Wright who will likely be available at that spot and a more NBA ready prospect.

I think it should be a 3 yr extension at the most. 4 yrs is pushing it a bit.

The fastest way for us to get back into playoff contention in the West is not only to improve our own team but also to weaken strong WC teams in the process. That's why I think it's smartest to go after (key) players on WC powerhouses and not to try to bring talent from EC teams we're not fighting for playoff seeding with. Of course, everything depends on who our draft pick(s) land.

Guys like Marc Gasol/DeAndre Jordan/LMA/Leonard are complete pipe dreams but I think it's worth it to try to at least gauge their interest. If only one of them has a potential change of heart it would completely swing the power balance in the West. Guys like Robin Lopez or Kosta Koufos may be potential center candidates for us -- Lopez anchors Portland's defense and Koufos is kind of in the same situation Davis was in last year (but he's actually a legit center).

It also might be worth it to force the hand of teams like Phoenix/GS by making them overpay for their RFAs (Green/Knight) and handicapping their cap flexibility in the future (not as effective this summer considering the cap is increasing).

Alls I'm saying is I wouldn't be prepared to pay max money for them. AROUND 7/mil a year is what I said. Last I checked, that's what they're currently making, and what I believe they're worth under the current cap. I'd rather lowball than overvalue like some people do 8-)

$7 million might not even get you Ed Davis. Really don't see how any of those guys listed will go for that. It's really too bad Kawhi will get the max from the Spurs, i'd really love to have him on the Lakers.

Approach:

Keep the team young, avoid bringing the big names like Kevin Love, Greg Monroe, etc unless a titan like Marc Gasol is willing to leave MEM for us, really don't see that. I want us to build around our promising young core of Clarkson & Randle and balance the roster in age by bringing in vets ready to come off the bench and help our young core develop on the court.

I think we keep J. Hill to see if we can package him and a young player for some disgruntled superstar otherwise not sure why we didn't trade him at the deadline to dump his salary.

NBA Draft:

(assuming we keep our pick)

1. Towns
2. Okafor
3. Russell
4. Looney

Draft Day Trades:

- Trade Hou 1st and our 2nd, and honestly even all our picks except our top 5 and try to move up to select Looney. I'm hoping he doesn't go as high as projected and maybe we could nab him somehow. I'd love to end up with one of Towns/Okafor and Looney.

If no Draft Day Trades:

Hou 1st - T. Jones, Hollis-Jeff, Hunter, Dakari
LAL 2nd - same as above pretty much

Off-Season:

Restricted:

1. Tobias Harris

I think if we offer some insane number like 14-15m/yr, Orlando won't match. It's overpaying for sure, but with the increased cap, I'm willing to overpay for a guy that I feel will help glue our starting line-up together.

I don't see Chicago nor San Antonio letting Butler nor Kawhi go so that's the only reason why they're not on there. Considering the money the Bulls will surely commit to Kawhi I'd love to...

Darkhorse Move: Operation Mirotic

Acquire Mirotic somehow from the Bulls while keeping Clarkson, Randle and our top 5 pick. I'd love to have Mirotic on this squad but do know Bulls fans REALLY like him as part of a new core of Butler/Mirotic with Noah and Rose as supporting stars (sucks to name Rose like this but eh thats another thread)

Wishful 2015-2016 Roster:

Clarkson/ vet pg /
Kobe/Jabari/ *RJ Hunter
Harris/Young/
Randle/Boozer/Black
Towns or Okafor/Hill/*Dakari Johnson
2014: Randle / Clarkson
2015: Russell / Nance
2016: Ingram / Zubac
2017: Top 3 Pick? Fultz, Ball or Bust

Still not sure on the free agent role players to sign but I think keeping the team young isn't too bad although I think Jim and Mitch may look to speed up the rebuild process rather than let it grow completely from the draft as I want.

Agreed. But I think he's a worthwhile project. Toss him in the D-league and see what happens. The bigger the risk, the greater the reward.

My pipe dream (don't rain on my parade)

Lottery ends up going down as:
1.) LA Lakers
2.) Knicks
3.) Wolves
4.) Sixers

Lakers trade #1 to Philadelphia for #4, #11, their second round pick, and Denver's 2nd. 76ers takes PG Emannuel Mudiay, Knicks take C Jahlil Okafor, and Wolves take C Karl Anthony-Towns.
Lakers Draft SG D'Angelo Russell at #4
Lakers trade #11, #28, their 2nd round pick and LAC 2nd round pick to Orlando for #5.
Lakers draft SF Justice Winslow at #5
Lakers draft C Robert Upshaw with PHI 2nd
Lakers draft PG George Lucas with DEN 2nd

Lakers sign C Omer Asik in FA
Re-sign Ed Davis and Jeremy Lin

PG: Jordan Clarkson / Jeremy Lin
SG: Kobe Bryant / D'Angelo Russell
SF: Justice Winslow
PF: Julius Randle / Ed Davis
C: Omer Asik / Robert Upshaw
