I guess im one of the few who regards smart as more of a dumars style combo guard than a pg. i still think we need a true shot creating pg. turner and Thomas are not bad but turner is too high usage for his efficiency and thomas is best suited to a microwave role.

Has his defense been as good as advertised from college to the pros? That was one of the main reasons I wanted the Pistons to draft him that year but things didn't quite work out that way.

The title itself can speak louder for Smart when the Boston won at Toronto recently?

Thats the one thing everyone even the Smart doubters can agree on, his defense is really good. Hustles, gets in the passing lanes without gambling, closes out very good on shooters and when asked to do can be really good on pressuring the opposing ball handler. I'm not 100% sure about this but it looks like he's also someone who talks alot on D.
The 2024 NBA Champions Boston Celtics depth chart:
Guards: Holiday, White, Pritchard
Wings: Tatum, Brown, Hauser
Bigs: Porzingis, Horford, Kornet
Guards: Holiday, White, Pritchard

The versatility is impressive too on the defensive end. He's shown an ability to guard 1s, 2s and 3s. And he puts in a pretty impressive effort when he gets caught in mismatches against 4s and 5s. His defensive prowess is what ensures that he has a very high floor, it's just the offensive question marks that make his ceiling very debatable.

I've been doing a little stat crunching for a thread I'm going to post in the next couple of days. One number that emerged from my preparation that struck me is that Smart leads the team with 47 total offensive fouls drawn this season.
Zeller and Sullinger are tied for 2nd place. With 15.
He may already have a bit of a reputation as a flopper, but it seems to be doing more good than harm so far.

Let's be honest here. If Smart can learn to get into the paint and score with a floater or get to the rim, he becomes an impossible combo guard to deal with for opponents. He is an elite defender right now, can shoot it deep and will get better, is physical and can pass.
His scoring is a bit of a struggle because he is unsure what his athleticism allows him to do. Even with that, he's a player in this league. This guy is going to be a good player.

If we're being honest. Smart can't shoot, and is a chucker. He's got balls, but that doesn't mean he can shoot.
33% from 3 point land. The defense takes that every day. 66% free throw shooter, the defense takes that all day. And well 36% from the field overall is absolutely putrid. That may be the worst among all players with the minutes he's getting. Maybe Exum is the only player that gives his company.
IF Smart can learn to get into the paint or at least get a floater. He might raise his game to be an average offensive player. And then he'll be an above average starter. Which will be great.
He's show the potential this NBA season with his 3 point shot to be a threat from there in a year or two. And player are capable of making huge jumps in year 2 or 3. So it's not out of the question. But let's not act like he's doing anything close to being a good scorer/shooter or anything offensively. He's getting a huge amount of slack due to his big balls and high draft position.
I love this kid, but that was because I thought he could drive to the basket. I'm lowering expectations for him after this year from a potential all star to a potential good starter. He's young, he could beat that. But offensively he's been a disaster this year.

He's been playing out of his comfort zone for the most part this season. In college he constantly had the ball, now he's just playing off the ball and taking what the defense gives him. I expect big things from Smartacus

I agree with this. This is just one of the few reasons I'm for holding onto Turner. I like Turner and Smart on the court together. Smart doesn't have to be a traditional type point guard as long as we have someone like Turner. However, I do see flashes of good point guard play from Smart. A lot of nifty passes, especially the long passes he makes. I think he can be a good pg for the Celtics in the future.

I would not mind drafting a young PG like Kris Dunn or Tyus Jones this year and letting them basically prep for a year, continuing to utilize the Turner/Thomas combo as an unorthodox offense. Then when Turner hits FA at the end of 2016, you shift to a more traditional setup with Dunn/Jones plus Thomsa playing the point, and Smart/Bradley playing off the ball.

Elfrid , anyone who watch's both play knows that. The rest are either homers, or just dumb. Who has made a more impact on playoff hopes this year? Yes Smart, but talent wise Elfrid is just better especially on offense, its not even close.

I like Elfrid, but anyone who thinks Elfrid is better at this point is still wanking over points and assists like it's 1995 and we've never evolved as a society.

Elfrid Payton can't shoot and will never be able to with his horrid mechanics. You can keep him and your preference.
Smart is already a dominant defender on the ball and particularly in the team concept (if he had not gotten hurt earlier in the year he could've been an all defensive team guy as a rookie). Offensively he can space the floor (something Payton will NEVER be able to do), move the ball (he's got an excellent feel for where his teammates are and doesn't "over dribble").
Honestly, I think people are just dismissing Smart's ability to drive the ball and get to the free throw line because he's struggled as a rookie in those regards. But that's foolish. You don't just dismiss who a player has been his entire life because he struggles in a certain aspect in their rookie season. Smart will become a respectable driver/finisher/FTr guy in time.
Similarly, no one should take a season for a few months of Smart hitting threes and project that he's going to become a 40% 3 pt shooter some day.

You call people dumb then go on about Elfrids vast offensive skill. The guy cant even hit a FT, cant shoot, and when he isnt hitting layups his abilities are limited to only assists on offense.
But we're dumb? dumb dumb want gum gum? Yah, ok then.

Why do you say he will never be able to do?
Stop being such a homer
Elfrid could shoot in college......and he has improved mightily in the last couple months
Sorry for your homerism, hes much better

Elfird is shooting 56% on the season from the line, Smart is shooting 65%
Elfrid is shooting 78 % from the line in the last month.
Sorry. Your argument is not going to work here.
