all things fantasy for the year. i have an agenda (question) so i'll start this off:

my 15 team roto 5x5 league has two owners looking to pass a trade.

owner A proposed mike stanton for

owner B's lorenzo cain which he accepted.

i am the commish to this league and i veto'ed this trade without a vote. just straight veto'ed in order to keep the integrity of the pool as trading a player ranked 6th for a player ranked 195th is sheer lunacy.

after the fact, i put this trade up to vote. so far NO is leading 3-0.

i'd love some comments from the baseball heads in this forum. thank you.

Well Mike Stanton retired in 07 so probably good to veto that deal.

Assuming Giancarlo was who you meant, absolutely you should have vetoed that deal. Although, at present, Lorenzo Cain is the number 2 ranked player in Yahoo and Stanton is 36. On the rankings a full two weeks into the season it seems like a fair deal, but any reasonably minded person should decline that deal, no question.

Yeah that trade is idiotic. And, unless you're playing with guys who don't know a lot about baseball and are too easily swayed by 10 game sample sizes, I'd suspect some sort of collaboration between the two.

Definite veto, whoever accepted that deal should have their head examined by a medical professional or check the bank account to see how much they were paid off to do something that boneheaded.

I don't play much fantasy baseball anymore but i always had a problem with vetoes unless there's clear evidence of collusion. Its not a commissioners job to make sure one owner doesn't rip off the other. If you have stupid owners in your league then there's a problem with your recruiting. And then there's the fact that fantasy baseball isn't about winning trades, its very often defensible to make seemingly bad trades as long as it fits with a bigger strategy.

And then there's the fact that fantasy baseball isn't about winning trades, its very often defensible to make seemingly bad trades as long as it fits with a bigger strategy.

See my logic is, it isn't fair to the other members of the league to get shafted and have a player get an unfair advantage by getting a potential top 10 fantasy player for peanuts. Let's say you have a great team that you've put together and your competitor goes out and rips someone off - that is not fair. Simply having the luck to strike up a deal with someone who has no idea what they're doing shouldn't give you a potential game-breaker advantage over everyone else.

The only real advantage Cain will give you is in steals and maybe triples otherwise this is like trading your fillet mignon dinner for a can of corned beef. A good fantasy commish strives to maintain a good competitive balance for all players who are actually trying to win.

It's an awful trade for sure, but unless there's collusion involved as mentioned, there shouldn't be a veto. What you may want to do is hear the reasoning of why the trade was accepted (though you know why). Sounds like he's new to fantasy baseball, which is legit. Cain owner was just on top of things first and offered the better sell high player first.

I Have been in the same spot and came to the same conclusion. If both owners have issues with my decision I might be willing to reconsider, otherwise I just am doing my job.

thanks for all the replies, guys. i had the support of every owner that spoke up. the one owner trying to swindle stanton went uber-troll but he's quiet now making moves to keep him in 12th place. it was reassuring to hear opinions on this matter because i was only trying to keep the integrity of the league as for the most part, this is a very competitive league.

back to fantasy talk. i have both wong and travis on my team (travis was a waiver pick up) but i benched travis because of the rib.

shook my head at not starting travis, but wong had a nice day too.

gotta find a way to get both in the lineup while they hot. bogaerts off third, pedro alvarez in. travis to utility slot.

my outfield depth is crap. carter is slumping fierce and i was going to make a move for marisnick but he got snapped up today.

my starting pitching is too deep. there is an innings cap in this league so i can't just march them out there but there is NOBODY on the waiver wire so i'm loathe to let one go. it'll be hutch if anything.

I like all three of those OFs. Only starting 3 per team, though, means replacement is a lot higher for them, but all three have high upside at least.

As for the starters, use the top three every time out and spot start the others. And is that Yimi Garcia? You can probably dump him and grab a 4th OF to cover off-days. You already have 4 elite relievers. Speaking of which, maybe trade one of them for a hitter upgrade. I'd look for a team that needs saves and trade a closer for an OF, so he can be your UTIL/fill-in OF for off-days. I like Devon Travis as much as anybody else, but in a league like this, he shouldn't be your UTIL.

And which Santana is that? Johan, or Ervin? Either way it's a waste of a roster spot.

Not sure how low his value at the moment is, but what about going after someone like Yelich - I could see your team needing a little more pop, so maybe trade one of your pitchers for that bat.

I am loving me some D.Travis right now. J Know It Wont Continue at this pace but zero Complaints For now. (Grabbed him opening night)

Jays on my roster: Travis, Edwin, pillar, donaldson,castro, dickey, cecil. Very Toronto heavy but all good choices for me so far.

Travis, castro, cecil, pillar were all waiver grabs and donaldson was traded, so I only had Edwin and dickey last year.

skin blues - danny santana. i had him targeted during the draft so when he was released, i snapped him up using waiver priority. i like yimi garcia because he racks up the k's and has good ratios (era, whip). i suppose i could drop him but i've always had my rosters with these types of pitchers. last year, it was wade davis. funny, but i intended to punt saves after holland. ended up lucky with miller closing and grilli off waivers the day kimbrel was traded.

lbj - yelich would be a nice buy low player. thanks. i'll look into that trade option and see if the owner bites. yelich was a draft target so i'd be happy to acquire him. yes, this is a redraft league.

spimothy - we got some homers so i'm waiting for one of them to come asking for travis. i'd trade him gladly for some outfield depth but i'm hoping castillo or brown make my patience worth it.

Can this also be the thread where we talk about a starting pitcher we own going against the Jays, so we don't have to say things like, "Well, at least he's on my fantasy team" when everyone's in a sour mood on the series thread? I'm going to say yes.

(I own Carlos Carrasco, and need a big game from him this week).

personally, when i have a starter going up against the jays, i hope for a 1-0 jays win. with a homer from travis. that would be ideal.
