Bird wants to re-sign both Stuckley and Scola

Old news. It's from the year end press conference. I didn't see it posted so i figured i'd post it for anyone who may have missed it. I liked Stuckley a lot, so i am glad they are interested in bringing him back and seems like he's more then okay to returning as a reserve. As for Scola, for the right price i guess i couldn't complain but it would need to be a discounted rate.

Thoughts?

We have Bird Rights on Scola, so the mechanism to sign him is easy. Stuckey? Not so much. We have no early bird rights, or bird rights at all, so we'd have to use either cap space, or an exception (MLE or BAE). He's definitely earned more than the vet minimum, so even if we want to keep him we may not be able to.

Ultimately, I think it's kind of a thing that we either keep both, or neither. If we let Scola go, we'll likely have to use the MLE to find a new backup PF on the market, and wouldn't be able to use it for Stuckey. Now, if we can get Stuckey to take the BAE, we'd be made in the shade!

I honestly wouldn't be that shocked to see Stuckey take another small deal with a player option. He took the one year deal already and Bird's comments about guys saying they just wanted to be here could be about him. He went through a lot of crap in Detroit and seems to really value culture and winning. He got to play his game and was loved for it. He likely wants another shot with this team at full strength too. And he could hold off on a long term deal to reap the benefits of the rising cap.

Probably wishful thinking, but you never know. We'll be in pretty great shape if we can resign Stuckey, resign Scola using bird rights, use the MLE, and add a lotto pick.

For him to take a one year small deal not using the MLE, he's locked into the vet minimum salary. He's earned more. I assume he'd want a little more. He's already taken one "make good" deal. I think maybe he wouldn't take the full MLE, but he deserves, and would probably want, a good portion of it.

One year deals will be easier to negotiate with the cap soon to go up.

I think we can decide on Scola after the draft. If we draft a four, Scola could slow his development... Unless west opts out which I don't expect.

Theoretically? Sure. In reality, for us? Not really. We'll likely be over the salary cap, so we'll only have the BAE and MLE above the vet minimum. The BAE (bi-annual exception) can only be used every other year. So, we COULD offer Stuckey a one year deal under $2.139m, but then we wouldn't be able to use it the next season. We could use part of the MLE. After that, it's just vet minimum salary.

So, theoretically, yeah. However, Stuckey signed his make good contract this year, and he made good. I'm not sure he's willing to take that risk a 2nd year in a row. Maybe he wouldn't make good this time, and he'd never make more than vet minimum again? Maybe he'd want to cash in this summer, before every team spends hard on all the other free agents in 2016?

The MLE goes up too though, doesn't it? This year's free agents will want to take advantage of that.

Minimally per the last CBA. 1st year salary goes up about $100k each season, and isn't tied directly to cap, so rise won't exchange it.

Stuckey willed us to a number of key wins that kept us in it till the end. If that isnt worth the full MLE idk what is.
