Two Years Later: Waiters or Barnes

Post#1 » by gordito » Sat Apr 18, 2015 8:01 pm

This was probably one of the more intense debates (relative to their actual talent) I've ever seen or taken part of on RealGM.

Now that Waiters has been traded from the Cavs, and the guy responsible for drafting Waiters has been fired from the Cavs, I'm interested in who you guys think is the better player now.

Not surprisingly, back then, most Cavs fans on this board preferred Waiters over Barnes (and strangely enough, over Irving at times).

I don't know who the better player is, both are disappointments, Draymond Green is the better player, actually that whole draft was pretty terrible, the redraft would look ugly... it'd go AD, Drummond, Lillard... Green???

Beal isn't looking too good either...

MKG is one of the best wing defenders in the league. AD, MKG and Beal were all off the board by the time the Cavs drafted. There was no way the Cavs were taking Lillard with Kyrie already on the roster. Maybe I'm crazy, but I think that if Dion ends up in the right situation (meaning not playing next to Kyrie or Westbrook), his ceiling is still higher than Barnes.

Barnes all day... At the very least he has a skill in the sense he can stand in a corner and hit 3's...

Waiters brings absolutely nothing to the table... Terrible finisher, transition player, shooter, ball handler, defender, and does so as a 6'3" shooting guard..

The Waiters hate is just irrational. He's a fine ball handler and good on-the-ball defender. There is a reason he got so much PT in OKC despite the fact they have a bunch of SGs. There's a reason he got his starting job back at the end of last year. He's 23 years old and he's played under four coaches in three years. He's only played next to Kyrie and Westbrook as his PGs. The biggest legitimate criticism is that he's consistently inconsistent. But I'm not convinced that he can't land in the right setting and play very well.

It's no hate on Waiters... He is one of the least efficient players in the game...

Terrible shot selection (deep step back 2's)
His handles are not all that great... Goes left every single time..

The guy is a 6th man, (Ben Gordon type) if that.. I don't see him getting as streaky hot

Inconsistent defended, not a good one...

Well.. I say Barnes just because he's much better chemistry.. more efficient. With Waiters you have to tell him...don't be a chucker. With Barnes.. it's the opposite.. you prod him to be more aggressive. Upside? Barnes has a bunch but has to decide to become a STAR... not just a good role guy. Waiters... has to become a TEAM guy.. commit to defense. It says a lot when JR Smith replaces Waiters and it's a big +. Smith had a rep as a chucker/no D, yet he's adapted okay.
CENSORED... No comment.
