Always had love for Minnesota sports growing up in Manitoba. Kirby Puckett. Randy Moss. Kevin Garnett. Mike Modano. These guys were stars up there, too.
Moved to Toronto after school and honestly if Andrew couldn't have ended up here in Toronto there's no other American city I'd rather he be in than yours. I love the fit. The kid isn't afraid of the snow and his parents raised him well. He's not afraid of challenges.
Congrats, Minnesota. I really love watching your team play now and you guys are now my adopted Western conference team. Be patient with Wiggins though. He surprised this year but he still did it mostly through things we all knew he could do. As he attempts to expand his game and step out of his comfort level there will be growing pains. Decreased efficiency. Perhaps more turnovers as he works on his handles. As a fan who's watched Derozan transform himself slowly from a guy who could only score in transition to a guy who can now pass and handle the ball much better than he did at 19 I can assure you there will be some bumps in the road ahead. Wiggins is more blue chip and special obviously than Derozan (especially defensively) but the point I'm trying to make is that growth sometimes has to come from trying things out in games that aren't quite ready for prime time. So, if it seems like he's struggling next year to do too much don't panic or turn on the kid. It's all part of the process and it's often why talented players have sophomore slumps. He can only do so much in practice and in off seasons. Eventually, he needs to try new things out in games. Think long-term with that stuff. Support the kid. Argue against those who are thinking short-term with stuff like that and complaining about regression or how he's trying to do too much. It's not about where Andrew is now or even where he'll be at age 21. It's about tapping into all the potential that's there and exploring it fully so that he can be one of the top 15 players in the league when he's in his prime which is still more than half a decade away. Stay patient and enjoy the ride.
