It's gotten to the point where I'm actually looking forward to Tom Cruise movies because at least his ego is big enough to keep 10 other main characters out of his star vehicle.

Agreed. I was so disappointed with Avengers. Although, I loved Spader as Ultron and Bettany as Vision. Furious 7, made me yearn for a Hobbs solo film. Lol. Check out Mad Max Slart. You'll be so pleased. Also, Daredevil on Netflix is amazing. Vincent D'norfrio as Kingpin is beyond perfectly cast.

Daredevil is fantastic, just a great series. I am routinely shocked at the violence

Gives me hope that Deadpool might reach its potential

Pacino62 wrote:As for 15th Overall. Blue Ruin was amazing. So well done for a little indie with no stars. Glad it's got some fans out there. Love revenge movies. Some of my favorites:

"I Saw the Devil"...Amazing
"The Vengeance Trilogy"...Not the Old Boy remake either. The original. Old Boy is far and away the best of the 3.
"Mother"..Not as violent as the others
"Moebius"...Be warned

I watch a lot of foreign movies and Korea, IMO, has the market cornered on revenge + crime movies. Seen all of those except Moebius, which I'll have to check out... never even bothered with the Old Boy remake as there was no way it could possibly hold up to the original.... also, F Spike Lee. Kind of fuzzy on the particulars of the "Sympathy for [X]" movies from the vengeance series at this point, but I remember thinking that Sympathy for Lady Vengeance was the worst of the bunch by a good margin, but the critics don't seem to agree.

"Amazing" is absolutely an accurate description of "I Saw the Devil." May be too crude for some, but it's a must watch for anyone that likes fast paced violent movies with a severely F'd up element. Never a dull moment.

Big fan of "Mother" too, Joon Ho-Bong's got a few good ones. "Memories of Murder" is excellent, I think I may like it better than Mother, but both do a fantastic job of injecting humor into some pretty grim scenarios without it coming off as too corny. "The Host" is entertaining, but not anywhere near the same class as Mother and Memories of a Murder... wayy more Hollywood-ish. He recently did his first English-speaking film, Snowpiercer (starring Chris Evans and Ed Harris), which I enjoyed more than I thought I would but it's absolutely wicked cheesy... a good movie to smoke a bowl to, but I don't think I'd ever seriously recommend it to anyone (especially if they don't blaze)--- somehow it got a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is absurd.

Two other Korean crime movies worthy of your time are The Yellow Sea and The Chaser. Chaser's a bit over the top, while Yellow Sea's more serious.

If you liked, Blue Ruin, I'd recommend checking out the Argentinian movie, The Aura. Not the same kind of story (although still crime-related), but I got a similar vibe from it, as far as the pace, build-up, etc.

I'm assuming you've seen the Indonesian movie, The Raid: Redemption? If not, drop whatever your doing and go watch that isht right now. IMO, it's one of the greatest action movies of all time. The sequel was pretty disappointing, too chatty and political. They're coming out with a third one soon. If you like The Raid, Merantau's worth checking out--- same director and lead actor (Iko Uwais), but with a much lower budget. Iko's a legit martial artist, so they all have A+ action scenes.

I've already written too much here, but I'm definitely interested in hearing some more foreign and indie recommendations from you (& others) at some point. TBH, I've been meaning to bring this up in the Boston Community Thread for months now.

Thanks for reminding me I need to see The Raid, downloading now.

Deadpool is going to se great. Just the way that Reynolds is already taking the promos to such extreme levels...Some real funny stuff. Not sure if you saw the one of him in costume delivering a baby...but it's gold. Looking forward to that.

American Sniper was a great movie that just came out on DVD. Po lived it in theaters. Hopefully it's available for rental soon.

I thought Chappie had a really interesting, unique premise but the movie was nothing special. Thought the ending was a little corny.

As a general comment every movie has a happy ending now which sucks because you know going into the movie that things are going to work out for the main character. I want to go into the movie not knowing what will happen to the main character. That's part of what makes Game of Thrones so popular IMO. Anybody can get killed at any point. And I haven't watched the latest thrones season so NOBODY POST SPOILERS.

Been into Bombay Bicycle Club lately based on how tight they are live.

as for rap... Childish Gambino is way better than he gets credit for. Can spit bars and make really good songs. Like this freestyle, he actually is saying something real, drops in and out of the beat coversationally that jumps back in. So good.

And this song is just a jam.

I mean dude wrote a screenplay that went with his album... who does that? Really crative, good stuff imo.

This is also good tho very different than Childish

JMR. Please don't take this the wrong way, as I mean it with all due respect, but there are plenty of films out there that break that mold. Truth be told, 75% of them never end up in AMC or National Amusements. So, if you're primary source of viewing is the big screen (larger chains), you'll be disappointed. However, if you scour some back end cinemas and dvd, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Once in a while a juicy one gets released in the cinema like Nolan's Memento or the aforementioned Ex Machina. More often than not though, you've got no shot. Check out some of those movies 15th and I were discussing. You want twists and turns? Some of those are like getting hit with a bag of rocks. Haha

Last book I read was Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman. Great metaphysical book that really makes you think about the relativity of the human concept of time.

Been really into Pink Floyd's new album, "The Endless River." Not your typical Floyd album, but a great mostly instrumental piece that has many of the bands past sounds on it from the early Saucerfull of Secrets to Dark Side to Wish You Were Here and the Division Bell. Almost like a musical anthology, minus one song with lyrics.

Also, great sports book to read is "Season of Life" by Jeffery Marx, especially if you have a son.

No offense taken. I like underground music more than main stream music so it doesn't surprise me that underground movies would be better than main stream movies. I don't watch a lot of movies anyways but I'll check out some of the ones you guys recommended the next time I'm looking for something to watch.

If you like Korean crime movie, definitely check out New World and The Man from Nowhere. New World has Choi Min Sik in it (the guy from Old Boy) and The Man From Nowhere is like the Korean version of Man on Fire.

Both are awesome movies.

Seen em both. Quality movies.

New World seems like a prime candidate to get Americanized at some point... Infernal Affairs/Departed style.

EDIT: Google says that Sony Pictures bought the rights to New World a while back, so a remake is indeed in the works. Not surprising.

*** thread suggestions - start using spoilers when posting youtube videos, my browser is really slow when I open this thread ***

Well there hasn't been much (any?) electronic music in here so I figure I'll post some. None of these videos are pure electronic music its more bands with a lot of synths and keyboards or DJ's who incorporate actual insturments. anyways here goes nothing hopefully somebody enjoys one or more of these

Lotus - a band that incorporates a lot of synths and keyboards
Song: Greet the Mind
Spoiler:

STS9 - a band that incorporates a lot of synths and keyboards
Song: The Rabble
Spoiler:

Griz - a newer DJ who incorporates a lot of actual instruments into his songs
Song: Gettin Live
Spoiler:

The Floozies - The floozies blend funk and dubstep. It's two guys, a drummer and a DJ / guitarist. When they play live they jam out
Song: Love, Sex and Fancy Things
Spoiler:

Beats Antique - A band? (not really sure haha). These guys blend instruments, time signatures and beats from around the world with electronic bass and various other sounds to make very unique music. When they perform live they have belly dancers on stage.
Song: Jumpin - this song is pure electro-swing. i also like to play air trombone during this song which is one of the worst dance moves of all time but I really couldn't care less

Yeah, there's some great Hollywood cinema, but a lot of it is something to sell popcorn.. Honestly though I got into film when I was 18, living in Boston, and it's ten times easier now if you're interested- some things you might have to order on DVD, but a lot is on youtube, netflix, hulu plus has criterion stuff. Getting into classic, indie, underground, foreign, whatever..
