I agree. Just a matter of whether Monroe is a 4 or 5. Team should not be pressured to win now just for Melo. If Melo doesn't like it too bad. He should have thought of that before he forced the trade to NY and depleted our roster. Sure other bad organizational moves have been made, but we don't have to build a team with a 3 year window, we can right the ship long-term. Otherwise, go all in and trade the pick to win now ala Boston (I dont want to-although if it brings a chip I'll get over it).
As to Monroe, if we can get him, we should get him. It is an extremely rare chance to sign a young player not a restricted FA. How many top picks are FA at 24 who are actually good players? Ok4 is not an option now. You could argue that Monroe brings the same low post scoring, passing as OK4 and while the ceiling may be lower, we know he can play in this league and has a few years under his belt. Good combination of win now and later. Ok4 could be a franchise cornerstone or a bust or somewhere in between. Monroe is on the higher side of in between.
Gasol and LA are both older players. I like them both and welcome them to the team. But, aside from thinking they won't come, I don't know if they are enough to get us over the hump and the have less productive, healthy years.
My biggest concern with Monroe is defense (same concern as with Ok4).
So the next question is, who can you pair him with?[/quote]
Josh Smith? I like the Atlanta version, maybe he can be had cheap and would offer some shotblocking next to Monroe and Melo.
