Re: Atlanta Hawks 2015 Off-Season Thread
I know it's not the off-season yet but a lot of us on this board have recently been discussing ways to improve our roster after the playoffs. I figured all of that discussion should go in this thread to clean things up a bit.

Re: Atlanta Hawks 2015 Off-Season Thread
We have the coach and the system in place, now swing for the fences to bring in NBA caliber talent.
Our bench is filled with guys lucky to be in the NBA (Pero, Mack) and with guys who will never be more than just flawed role players (Bazemore, Mike Scott). Also, Elton Brand is there.
Work to bring in guys with upside, not just low talent scrubs who fit the system.
Example: Tony Wroten and Rudy Gobert can't shoot threes, but had they been drafted by us...they'd provide great production in the court and great trade value off of it.
Even Korver and Demarre are simply over achieving role players.
We need to get better players. The rest of the East won't be standing pat this summer. It would be a mistake for us to stay the course. Especially considering how underwhelming we have looked in these playoffs.

Re: Atlanta Hawks 2015 Off-Season Thread
Need some talent on the wing. JP Tokoto and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson would be some intriguing prospect to look at in the draft. That's if we don't jump up to make a move for a bigger name though. Seems like a pretty good draft to grab some quality talent out of.
Free agency, we should look for some bench bigs that can either rebound or protect the rim. Wouldn't mind seeing us stay small up front if we can acquire some quality depth, and a more versatile 2 guard.
Whats the situation on Tavares?

This would be a huuuuge mistake. Millsap is a very valuable trade asset once we resign him (dare I say if we resign him?). The game is moving towards floor spacing and every GM in the league is looking for those stretch 4's and stretch 5's.
Re-sign Millsap and package other small assets with him (like the 2017 MIN 1st) in a trade to bring in a superstar like player to Atlanta. It's the only way. We aren't bringing any superstars through free agency and we have proven we can't draft a superstar. Trade is our only option.

HMmmmm
Signing a Free Agent to a fat, long contract (what Millsap is looking for) just to trade him shortly thereafter is a super risky move.
It could also make it impossible to get even middling Free Agents to sign here long term (moving forward) knowing we could trade them to Siberia a month into their first season.
Trading Millsap (for Motiejunas?) was the thing to do LAST Summer. We sign Paul to a 3 year, $50 million contract this summer...there's a huge risk we end up with him for the duration. plus finding a player we want, at the salary we like on a team willing to trade for our PF....that's a lot that has to go right.

May as well do an offseason thread, screw it.
Where the offseason has more buzz happens.

The way I look it at it is like this..
Scenario 1:
Would you rather let go of any bird rights we have with Millsap and thus drop his cap hold. Then we let him walk this off-season and have even more cap space from Millsap's cap hold being removed. So we have a huge amount of cap space and we make our routine pitches to chase these star names in free agency and of course since we are the Hawks none of them will choose to come here. And so we are left a ton of cap space and will end up using it on middling players that will get us nowhere.
Scenario 2:
We re-sign Millsap and package other assets of ours with him to bring in a star player through a trade that would fit one of our many needs. OR, I guess we could use Millsap in a S&T but teams don't usually deal key pieces in a S&T so I don't see us gaining a major return from going that route. We'd be much better off re-signing Millsap and trading him later when the season starts around the deadline.

We would have to severely overpay Millsap IMO because like DMC he will have several suitors.
You have to give up either AH or PM if you want a legit center, PM is logical casualty.
I'm sorry I don't buy the "floor spacing" narrative anymore . youre watching 1 guy single handedly push his team past "shooters" . when you go cold, you need to be able to get a high % shot, we can't.
Lebron is like 6/54 from 3 this season, 80% of his pts have come FROM THE PAINT.

Re: Atlanta Hawks 2015 Off-Season Thread
I've seen us whiff on free agency enough to know that we have no shot in h3ll of getting a big name player (preferably center) to come to Atlanta. What good is cap space whe you can't sign any star players in free agency?
Guys like DJ and Aldridge are just pipe dreams. Why the h3ll would they want to come to Atlanta? Does anyone seriously think we have a shot at signing one of those two guys?
A Robin Lopez or Tyson Chandler is at least more realistic but still far fetched imo.

DJ and LMA would waltz into the ECF every year if they pick their spots right.
Depends on $$
LMA will do one of two things. Remain in Portland because that's where he can get the most cash. Or he will go to a Texas team and follow the "I'm coming home" narrative.
DJ will most likely get the 5 year max with clippers instead of the 4 year max every other team can offer. Steve Balmer practically poops $100 bills daily so he will have no problem overpaying for DJ. If DJ wants to also follow the "I'm coming home" narrative then he would also only be in play for Texas teams.
I just don't see these guys as realistic options whatsoever.

Hawks needs to start using the Atlanta nightlife as a recruiting tool in FA.

I agree that lack of recruitment has been one of our biggest problems during free agency. I mean just look at all the strategies teams are doing during free agency and compare it to what we do. It's like we are a sun belt conference team trying to get on the level of SEC recruitment teams. We need to step our game up this off-season and make better/stronger sales pitches.
