Jose Bautista spoke to the media today and it's clear that no one knows or even has a clue when he might play in the field. Took the cortisone shot because progress in rehabbing the shoulder had stalled, and the pain meds he was taking were keeping him up at night. Of the various courses of action available to him, the shot is the most aggressive yet least invasive remaining. There is inflammation but no structural damage, but as Adam Lind's mother would tell you, if there is inflammation, something is causing it.

Exploratory surgery was considered, but won't be tried except if all else fails.

I'm still not sure how they expected anything to improve by keeping him in the lineup. I'm amazed at how reckless and short-sighted an organization could be with player injuries (Bautista, Reyes, Travis, etc). If a player is hurt, he's hurt. Either DL him or rest him a bit. Putting him at DH, or asking him to stop batting left-handed, and so on, is not the answer.

Well, they have stopped playing him now. Not in tonight's lineup, and I'm guessing we won't even see him DH before the weekend.

Indeed. Injury management of this organization is decidedly bush league. In this case I very much hope I won't be able to say "I told you so", but it's looking pretty bad at the moment.

And Randle made a game thread? That's gotta be a first!

ColabelLOL in the outfield again. Already his defense lead to two losses. Not sure if he will get better or not.

Unfortunately, Bautista needing some type of surgery wouldn't surprise me at this point. I'm not a doctor, nor do I pretend to be one, but I can't imagine someone's bad shoulder will magically heal by violently swinging a bat everyday (especially someone with Bautista's swing).

When you have a GM and a manager both looking to save their jobs above all else, it's amazing how they suddenly stop caring about consequences.

Players play hurt regularly over the course of a season. JD is doing it right now with his own hamstring issue, Goins sprained his ankle on Saturday, Buehrle has reportedly been struggling physically all season, and Edwin has also been banged up for a while now himself (and those are only the situations we know about). It's just the nature of professional sports that you're never going to get a full lineup of guys at 100% health (especially in this particular marathon sport which requires them to play virtually every day for 6 months).

Usually, athletes are praised for their selflessness, devotion to the team, and grit when they do it (see LeBron last night, for example). Oddly, the media narrative has been quite the opposite for Bautista. For whatever reason, his decision to continue to play while hurt has almost been deemed a selfish act...like he's somehow choosing to DH to maintain his own stature at the expense of the team (rather than doing the only thing he can to provide value while he can't throw and doing it quite well at that). It's obviously not the first time this city has turned against its stars (or even Bautista himself) for bizarre reasons, but it's seemingly happening again.

I don't recall reading stories vilifying Bautista for playing hurt. I don't think that's the issue. The issue is with the medical staff.

Also, the examples you cite are really different from I can't even lift my arm. There are different levels of injury. I think we can all agree that Bautista does not have a routing nagging injury common amongst ballplayers.

You haven't heard or read the same stuff I have over the past few days/weeks, I guess.

The issue is with the medical staff.

Because we know more about sports injuries than the actual doctors and trainers employed by the Blue Jays?

Except we know literally nothing about any of these injuries beyond the little information they've divulged about them in the media (if they have at all), so I'm not sure how you can say anything definitive about them.
