True, he's not landing 1st round talent. What he did was use his "NBA connections" to recruit a bunch of guys on the outside looking in. Hey man leave UNLV and come to ISU where you can showcase your game to scouts. You get a bunch of fringe 2nd rounders together and by Cyclone standards that's a highly talented team.
If the Cyclones were so full of fringe talent, why on earth were they the #3 seed last year? I watched the Cyclones last year a number of times and it seemed like Fred's philosophy is an unreasonably fast offense, with a lot of three point shooting, and not much emphasis on rebounding or defense. It's the GSW way, but who's our Stephen Curry? We don't have the personnel to chuck threes. There's no way any of our guys hit 44+ percent of their threes while taking 8 - 9 per game. Plus, playing hard only one side of the court is a recipe for disaster. The only reason GSW are in the Finals right now is that their defense held up thanks to an unusually healthy Bogut and a brand new all-world defender in Green. Even if the GSW pull it off, that won't change the fact that three point chucking teams typically fail in the playoffs. The Warriors would only be a very rare exception that proves the rule. I'm glad the Iowans want Fred and have a deep respect for him but what's Fred going to do to put us over the hump exactly? He has zero experience at the NBA level, and our FO probably won't even spring for the couple of good assistant coaches needed to properly support the transition. His philosophy stinks, and he is hardly a household name. What on earth makes you believe he will bring a strong defensive presence to complement his eccentric three point focused offense?

Ridiculous. This entire post is so ridiculous I'm not sure why I'm responding to it - but i feel compelled to at least respond to the bolded part.
The Bulls just paid Thibs 9 million dollars to walk away, and Doug Collins is being talked about as an assistant - but you think they won't pay for good coaches? Holy christ.

Also Amnestied Boozer and paid him 13.5 million to play for the Lakers! That is noyt cheap, they showed they would give up huge dollars to get something done

The NCAA tournament isn't a good way to judge coaching, usually the best basketball programs with the most money invested attracted the best talent in the country. Iowa State isn't a big-time basketball recruiting school

Hoiberg can draw up a crafty play, but he is a below average coach who came in with limited experience. He loaded his teams with talent, at times they didn't play hard, and he managed games poorly at the end of games. Sure they won, but they also lost several games they should not have... including their last one.
Fred and staff have done a fantastic job assembling a team that can win. Hopefully it gets turned over to a Eustachy or Floyd type who is actually a better NCAA coach.
Hoiberg is not a good game manager. And you don't need a recruiter in Chicago. He's just the polar opposite of the guy they fired. He's a lot more likable and will be a much better politician. But you are getting a lesser skilled coach than the one you are paying not to coach... and it's all just politics.
Thanks for this. Overall I'm optimistic about Hoiberg but you spoke to some of my concerns. Any time a hire is cut from the square-jawed, own-the-room, Captain America mold, I wonder if we'll be equally impressed by what's under the hood. We don't need a Mayor, we need a coach with a sharp tactical mind. That said, coaching is by and large a people business. Kerr, for instance, is a smart guy no doubt, but a lot of his success comes from his ability to work both his top-notch assistants and his front office. If Hoiberg is cut from the same cloth, I think he can have success here while building his own coaching acumen.
Well you're getting THE Mayor if we hire Fred
