OT- Found an awesome painting

Post#1 » by theSkinny » Fri May 29, 2015 7:12 pm

Hiya Laker Fans,

I recently bought an estate sale condo down in Belize and the previous owner had this painting.

After some research I learned it was commissioned by the Lakers after their 1987 championship painted by Ernie Barnes.

Looks like what I have is number 27/50 artist print signed.

I imagine it might be worth a few thousand, so my question is.

Do any of you cool cats know anything about the painting or value or anything really.. I am pretty stoked I have acquired it.

It's called "Fastbreak" and was a commissioned piece from around 1985.

He died in 2009, and you can still buy his stuff on his Amazon store.

Well, just heard back from the Ernie Banks fan page and apparently it is worth on the low side $4k.. SCORE!

I also read the Swizz Beats bought Ernie Banks first ever painting for 1.7 million... wow.

Never heard of this guy before, but the more I learn the more I really like about him.
Was a professional football player

His style is very interesting
lots of sports and music related material.

Now I am torn, do I sell it or do I keep it

You must be a "youngin" lol

Dude Ernie Banks is one the most prolific urban artist's in the 70's and 80's. I dont know for sure but i would imagine it could be worth anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand based on condition and "THE ABILTY TO VERIFY AUTHENTICITY" and thats not very easy when someone is forking over that much money on a "PRINT"

I have seen Ernie Banks copies and i cant tell the difference and almost just gave up and said screw it i'll take the chance but good thing i did not.

I hope you make some $$ on that but its hard to verify authenticity

"Mid 30's youngin from Canada"

There may be a COA for it, will know next week when the executor has a chance to go through some docs the owner had. She thinks it's there but needs to check.

I am pretty certain it's authentic, the owner was the stage manager on "what's happening" and Mr Banks was on the show and his work was featured on the show (usually presented as JJ walkers own paintings)

The more I look into his story, and work and being an avid fan of basketball, I don't know what I want to do with it yet. As well with me living in Belize currently it makes the whole eBay thing a bit of a pain in the arse potentially since it is mounted and shipping it could be sketchy.

I do appreciate the feedback, if anyone else has any other info or comments.. I would enjoy hearing them.

Man that's an awesome painting. Curious...is it depicting a particular moment in that series?

It was not "Whats Happening" it was "Good Times"

Anyhow if you ever want to sell it let me know. I have 2 of his original prints and would love to add that one.

I first heard of ernie banks when I looked into the cover art of my copy of "uptown saturday night" by camp lo. His style is really cool, the long-limbed figures, the cool sense of movement...

That picture is awesome btw
