80's Broncos in the NFC
How much success do they have? What does this do to Elway's legacy?

They'd get destroyed by the 49ers/Redskins/Giants. You know, the same teams that whooped them in all those Super Bowls.
Eric Maynor is the worst basketball player I've ever seen.

IMHO, Elway would have never made it to those Super Bowls. Can't see him getting by the 49ers, Redskins, Giants and Bears. No way.

I think it's a testament to Elway's greatness that he dragged that useless bunch of crap to the Super Bowl three straight years, despite the whoopings they suffered at the hands of the NFC. Give him Jerry Rice, Charles Haley, Bill Romanowski, Roger Craig and Ronnie Lott and he would have buried anyone at that time.

One person once claimed Elway as the greatest quarterback in history. The comebacks were great but statistically he was much closer to Eli than Payton. Eli has better playoff numbers, so there's not a huge gap between the two.

It's also a testament to how Cleveland is so unlucky.

Lol. That is so true. The world kicks that city in the crotch constantly. I have always thought that those Browns teams weren't as good as the NFC champs of the time and apparently not quite as good as John Elway by himself, but they would have been pretty damn competitive if they had gone instead of Denver. They had very good players at every level on both sides of the ball.

Greatest is pushing it. I am just talking off the top of my head, but it seems he got more efficient as he got older. I always hear that he never cared much for Dan Reeves and his offense. Whether or not that affected his productivity, I can't say. I will say this and it applies to Marino also, his surrounding talent was mostly garbage and the only reason you heard about these guys is because Elway and Marino made them better. So while, Elway isn't THE greatest, I can overlook his numbers a little and make the leap that he was better than some of the guys with better numbers than him. I would take him over Favre for instance and this may start a dumpster fire here, but probably over Peyton Manning too.

I don't think the Browns had the talent of the Broncos or the NFC champs, but I think they overachieved because Marty Schottenheimer coaches his teams to be mistake free (few turnovers, penalties). I felt this way about the Chiefs when he was there too. Being a Chargers fan, I thought he took a little bit too much blame for playoff losses because, again, they may have outplayed their talent (even though that Chargers team was very talented). The Chargers also had two VERY unlucky playoff losses while he was there. The first one, against the Jets, they missed a FG in OT (not a long one), and then against the Pats a couple of years later, they had a bunch of crazy things happen. The worst was an interception that would have sealed it but the Chargers fumbled it back to the Pats on the int return. Being a mistake free football coach, these things had to really frustrate Marty.
Of course with Norv, Kaeding misses three fgs in a playoff game against the Jets, a game they lost by three.

If the Browns were in the NFC they likely go nowhere. If anything, they were lucky. And I'm a Browns fan.

I agree about the NFC as I said, but they did blow two AFC Championship games at the very end in consecutive years. I wouldn't call the way they ended those games lucky.

Would you care to explain why it's obvious?

Not really. We can pick this debate up after you grow up, do some homework, study, see and UNDERSTAND the COMPLETE history of the NFL and how it was played with different rules before you were born.

Idealistic? At the point you ripped me for having not watched any football in the 80s I was saying that it was a testament to Elway's greatness that he was able to get a sad sack Broncos team to three Super Bowls even though they got their asses kicked. I used the 49ers as an example since that's one of the teams that they played. Are you disputing that outside the position of QB, that the 49ers weren't vastly more talented AND better coached?
