Opinions on Wilner
Look,
I'm sure this has been talked about many times, but I'm just curious what other Jays fans think about this guy. I'll make a couple of things extremely clear. I respect his acumen and believe that he's quite knowledgeable, I just can't get over his attitude on the phone in portion of Jays talk.
He absolutely cannot allow another person to express their opinion without childishly cutting them off and such. I would say that he's generally right about 80% of the time. The thing that really bothers me is that when a good caller makes interesting points which I think are quite valid, his over the top self-righteousness becomes even more evident.
I would enjoy this guys insight a lot more if he was able to allow callers to say what they've got to say without continually interrupting them in a childish fashion. To be clear, I've never called his show and this is not based on personal experience. There's just a difference between an abrasive personality and an absolute arrogant idiot. This guy needs to tone it down a bit.

Honestly,
I think Wilner is a smart guy, knows his stuff. Problem is the callers are so uninformed, uneducated. Leafs talk callers are able to voice their opinion freely whether or not it's based on fact. He doesn't accept stupid suggestions/comments, which I find quite refreshing.
IE: Fire Gibbons, stupid trades, the bs leadership issue, goins over reyes, etc... It's all uber crap.

Have you seen the movie Whiplash? Wilmer wants to be that teacher only he never goes full Jk Simmons. I think this is part of his problem.

Hate the guy. He's smart and sometimes he's spot on, but he always has an agenda, he can't take criticism and he can't deal with people that don't see things his way.

Bang on. When someone brings up a valid point he just makes it about him and then doesn't let a discussion happen for fear of being wrong.
Also, he is trash on the radio, I can't listen to his call...
That's what she said.

His whole schtick would work a whole lot better in print.

Re: Opinions on Wilner
He's smart compared to the uneducated fan that typically calls in. He's actually an arrogant idiot though. Compared to most other people in the pro baseball industry he is at the bottom in my opinion of generally knowing the game and giving advice. How he has a show is beyond me

thats more along the line of what bob mccowan does but he doesnt have that same condescending tone...hell let the caller air out what they have to say and hell have a rebuttal. but at the same time he rarely allows callers ahah.
wilner on the other hand will cut you off and wont even listen to what you have to say. hes no diff than guys on here we all have access to the same statistics. wilner as we all know has an agenda and is a company man so he wont let certain subjects fly. its not refreshing id rather have campbell/zaun as bj's talk.

Re: Opinions on Wilner
I dislike Wilner's show. If you are doing an open line type broadcast, you have to have some patience with the casual fans or less well informed. We aren't tuning in - if we still do - to hear him ride roughshod over callers. It's a schtick that wears out rather quickly. However, what I really dislike about all of the Sportsnet media guys is that they are flunkies to the party line.

Bang on.
He blocked me on twitter a few years ago simply because I didn't agree with him on something. Gave me a good laugh at the time.
He must have blocked thousands of people by now.

Re: Opinions on Wilner
i don't envy wilner's job in the slightest, you listen to some of the irrational, knee-jerk calls and tweets he has to deal with and sometimes i feel sorry for the guy. that being said, he can never admit being incorrect about anything and is far too argumentative. a well-informed caller could call in, make 10 points -- 9 of them factually accurate, but he'll pick out the one off-base point and argue it to death like a **** prick.

If I had to deal with as many morons as Mike Wilner does on a daily basis, I'd be way more of an **** to them than him. He's honestly pretty restrained (which is unfortunate, because his show would be more entertaining if he did go off on people occasionally).

I don't listen to the guy. Besides being an arrogant prick, he's a Jays flag waver and not someone who is going to provide much honest insight.

Re: Opinions on Wilner
Wilner is insufferable and he is an arrogant prick and is like that to the other on air personalities, not just the callers. He is so desperate to keep his job that he will agree with everything the Jays do. His insecurity has gotten worse ever since he got suspended for criticizing Cito Gaston continually. I'm not the biggest Cito fan but Wilner had an axe to grind with him because Cito embarrassed him one time at a presser years back and when Cito got rehired he would bash him on everything he did to a point where it got comical.
Ever since that suspension, he is so paranoid about losing his job he will defend everything the Jays do to keep himself in the Jays good books. Remember with his continual "it's early" refrain when the 2013 Jays stumbled out of the gate totally ignoring how badly fundamentally they were playing, never mind just the losing. And then he gloated because the Jays won like 10 in a row in July to get within 3 or 4 games of a WC spot and saying how everyone was overreacting. Of course when the Jays crashed and burned after that, he was strangely quiet about that.

I think he subscribes to the John C. Dvorak school of journalism. Click bait. ie. Apple computers suck and a mouse is useless. A couple months later, do an article on how well Apple is doing and how useful a mouse is. No culpability.
