Opinions on Wilner
I very rarely now listen to JaysTalk. My life has improved tenfold. I suggest everyone else do the same.

Agreed. Not my fav guy, but imagine if your job was to provide an instant on the air response to every post on Real gm. Most good, some jaw droopingly silly. I listen from time to time when thinking about the Jays right after the game isn't too depressing.

Re: Opinions on Wilner
the simple fact is that most of the posters here have as much if not more knowledge than wilner does. listening to his congested nasal voice does nothing to further the experience of being a fan of the blue jays. my opinion of wilner is vastly critical for all the reasons already stated above.
my greatest fear is that wilner will get the play by play gig after jerry finally retires.

Re: Opinions on Wilner
okay well.
good to see I'm not the only one who feels this way. He just rubs me the wrong way every time he cuts someone off. My girlfriend knows nothing about baseball so couldn't possibly critique him for knowledge, but she gets mad whenever I put Jays talk on the radio after a game because she doesn't like Mike Wilner.
He could be 1000% right about everything he says, but his condescending and childish act bothers her. She is actually trying to learn the game somewhat, so when he starts talking over the questions it irritates her that she doesn't even get to hear the question before it's being answered.
Le sigh. I love siddall though, he does remind me of an Ashby type who i REALLY liked.

Re: Opinions on Wilner
Joe Siddal is the best thing the Jays did. I wish I could hear more of him. Guy has a great baseball knowledge and an enthusiasm that translates well over the radio.
Wilner has a good baseball knowledge but his voice just isn't made for radio. All his emotions seem forced during broadcasts. On twitter Wilner is condescending to even some really good points. I hope he is not the future of bluejays baseball radio

Wilner the king of "it's still early" until it's too late and then it's "the future is still bright"

Re: Opinions on Wilner
Wilner is much smarter than the average fan but much dumber than a knowledgeable baseball person.
He refuses to assign blame to AA or Gibby for anything and always says the players just aren't playing up to their potential. Even when it's obvious they are over the hill or making the same errors over and over again.
When the Jays were playing horribly last year he would always say don't worry they will revert to their mean. But guess what, losing is now the new mean.
He tries to act like a lawyer and present lengthy arguments to bolster his case, but unfortunately most fans don't have the wherewithal to poke the obvious holes in them. I am waiting for someone smart and patient to destroy him on the air.

Re: Opinions on Wilner
He can be pretty annoying, my friend once tweeted him a question and accidentally made a typo and Wilner just pointed out his typo and didn't respond to the question.
Thing is though, how would you react of you had to field as many dumb calls as he does? I sometimes will listen to Jays talk just to listen to the amount of comically bad comments people make about the Jays.
Yea that's what really bugs me and a lot of the Toronto media is guilty of that holier than thou "I'm better than the average fan because I'm so optimistic" attitude. Last year in August the Jays the Jays were around 6.5 games back of a wild card spot and Wilner is still saying "I don't understand why fans are so quick to write them off". Call me crazy but when a team hasn't made the playoffs in 23 years it's hard to be optimistic of them suddenly overcoming a huge gap in the standings.

Re: Opinions on Wilner
the stupid people and questions are inevitable, and I think for the most part.... when an absolute idiot calls in, we're more than ok with him dumping on them and making them feel stupid as they should... those people are certainly part of the problem.
My problem stems from the fact that he treats EVERY caller that way. He can't continue to use bad callers as an excuse for his poor attitude and inability to act in a fashion which is conducive to being a good radio call in host. Sometimes, well educated callers make their way to the air waves, and he immediately categorizes them in the same place as the uneducated stupid callers. I'm sure that there are posters on this very site who could school dude easily, and if they ever did so on the air waves, it's almost a given that he would backpedal and assert his "dominance" and act self-righteously about his side of the argument that he was losing, all while discrediting the caller who may have just zipped him up in a body bag.

Re: Opinions on Wilner
I still remember back in the year when the Rays had their first breakout season and they had that hot start and people were calling in and asking Wilner if we should be worried about the Rays coming up. People were saying things like they have some real young talent this time and etc,. And Wilner just scoffed at the callers and snorted "C'mon, they're the Rays. They'll always suck. They'll come back down to earth soon."

Re: Opinions on Wilner
yea... pretty much.
I'm just so sick of this guy. Love Siddall though.
I've always loved Howarth, but recently, he's been getting on my nerves criticizing people like Jose Reyes because he thinks Ryan Goins should be the everyday SS.
I mean ****.... great D.... one of the worst wRC+ imaginable.... uh I'll take Reyes... Reyes did more offensively this week than Goins can do in 1-2 months... so yea.
but ya... **** Wilner...
I wish the radio crew was Siddall & Someone knowledgeable and likable.
