Should Baynes start next season?
Baynes had a career year and as a starter was a double double machine putting up some consistently huge games.Should he start for the spurs next season?

No, but he should be first big off the bench replacing (insert name here we get from a trade for Splitter/FA).

I said no because I highly doubt we trade Splitter.

Re: Should Baynes start next season?
Is Baynes even with us? He played on the qualifying offer this year, so he is a UFA. He wanted more than the QO last summer, but the FO wouldn't give it to him... I'm not sure that he is looked on as more than a replaceable vet min big man, and I agree: he's not a special piece. He has the continuity factor, but from a basketball POV, I would be talking to Ajinca rather than Baynes, and having Boris and Parker here might give us the inside line...

If Baynes is starting next year it means the Spurs struck out in free agency. In that event they might as well just blow this thing up and start to rebuild.

I'm a fan of Baynes, but if he is starting for the Spurs, something went wrong. Could he start on a team like the Knicks? Sure, but not for us.

Re: Should Baynes start next season?
I like Baynes but if Splitter's healthy he should be starting over Baynes.
Baynes is a nice energy guy off the bench but we're just a better team with Splitter on the floor, Splitter does all the little things off the ball that make our starting unit so good. He sets better screens than Baynes, rotates better off the ball, his positioning on both ends is far better and he's a much better passer.

Yeah, and even if Splitter isn't here, Duncan and Diaw should still be the starter. Baynes is a nice backup big to have. Big body, not afraid of contact, soft touch around the rim. Not a starting caliber Center though unless Tim Duncan gets on the time machine. We had guys like Rasho/Oberto/Elson before next to Duncan and still be a very good team, but that was a younger Duncan. A Superstar PF.
My guess is he's not even here next year.
