Andy Lee traded to Cleveland

For a 7th round pick

@AdamSchefter: Cleveland is trading a 7th-round pick in 2017 to San Francisco for three-time Pro Bowl punter Andy Lee, league sources told ESPN.

@AdamSchefter: From moment 49ers used a 5th-round pick on Clemson punter Bradley Pinion, Andy Lee's days in SF were numbered. Now Lee starts fresh in CLEV.

Just take all of our pro bowlers away from the team.

No way you use a 5th rounder on a punter if they didn't feel he would be an upgrade/lateral move over Lee.

The buzz on Pinion has been pretty positive and he'll come at a fraction of the price.

Lee was going to count 2.55 million against the cap and Pinion is only going to be 483,550 against the cap.

Plus, Pinion can do kickoffs.

And Lee's contract was increasing in cap hit over the next few years, ie 3.3 mil, 4.3 mil, etc.

It sucks seeing the MVP Lee go, but he's given a great 10 yrs and hopefully his replacement is here for 10 yrs.

Not surprised that Pinion won the job. He'd better win the job after we used a fifth on him. But it seems premature to move Lee this early. Pinion hasn't even kicked in an NFL exhibition game. And what if Pinion gets hurt (admittedly unlikely)? I guess getting anything for Lee is a plus, but a 2017 7th-round pick has fairly insignificant value.

While I agree with you, Crimson, I think the motivation was more motivated by the desire to carry out a fire-sale to free up cap space than whether or not Pinion can execute a punt in Levi's.

Lee's days were numbered once he started having a few very un-Andy Lee-like shanked punts (ie: more than zero) over the past 2 seasons.

The thing that makes it suck the most, is the fact that we will be punting more this season.

I'm not so sure that's true. Our offense was bad last year relative to the talent. We punted four or more times in 14 of 16 games, including the final 11 games (averaging just over 5 punts/game over that span). We were still right about the mid-point of the league in terms of number of punts, but I think we'll move the ball more consistently this year.

Nope the curse is in effect, we will start Blaine Gabbert the majority of the season.

Maybe this was common knowledge around here, but I didn't know that his daughter was lost. I can't imagine that happening to any of my kids, even a week old. As a father, I know you spend at least nine months either thinking about having a baby or your wife/gf pregnant. And then to lose it all week later.
