Drafts Soon, Who's on everyone's wish list?

Post#1 » by cubsflan24 » Thu Jun 11, 2015 10:26 pm

So, I have came up with the top 3 guys I wouldn't mind seeing the Pacers pick. Some others I really prefer the Pacers to stay away from. Here's my top 3 list for the Pacers.

1. Cameron Payne PG, Murray St. - I think he would fit nicely in what Bird and Vogel are trying to make this team become more of a up tempo team. The NBA is becoming more of a smaller/ Up tempo game and we would just more Hill more to the SG position which I think in this style of ball he would fit better at anyways.

2.Frank Kaminsky PF, Wisconsin. - Kaminsky would fill In the spot when West an Hibbert both leave at the end of this season (most likely). Also in my opinion Kaminsky can fit on a team that's more up tempo because you always need that stretch 4.

3. Bobby Portis F, Arkansas - I see a bit of David West in Portis and he could take over right in West's spot. I prefer Payne or Kaminsky over Portis.

Agree with Payne, but at this point I'll be kind of shocked if he's there. He seems to be shooting up draft boards.

Other than Payne, I'd love to grab Booker, Lyles, or Turner.

For guys who have almost no chance of being at our pick (though could conceivably drop) Porzingis or Johnson. Both have top 5 potential, but I've seen them in the 10-12 range on a couple of mocks, though I don't expect them to be there at all.

Just not a big fan of Booker and Lyles. Not saying that because they played for UK lol, just not that high on them. Turner I think has a chance to be solid but just not totally sold on him. I think Payne will be there for us, if not we can always trade up little bit to get him as well. ( As long not asking for too much)

I think those two got hurt more than anyone by going to UK in that they had to defer to other top notch players.

HOWEVER, one thing they did gain is flexibility, and they showed that they're true team players. They sacrificed their own games to play out of position or different styles in order to better suit the team and help them win. Have to respect that. I've come around on Booker, and I really do like Lyles.

After the guys that really aren't going to be there...(Hezonja, Porzingis, Johnson, Winslow, WCS), I really like Lyles, Payne, Booker, Portis, and Kaminsky. If were a little further down, I'd like Oubre, Grant, and Dekker.

I have a feeling we might do a Kawhi Leonard part 2 this time. Picking whoever slips out of the top 10 and trading it for a young vet. And maybe lower picks.

But if we stick into keeping our own pick, I'd love to have Cameron Payne. WCS and Payne are climbing up the draft boards but I think Payne is not going into the top 10.

If Payne is gone, however, I'd pick whoever slips out of the top 10 and trade down.

Myles Turner would be a good pick too, but not a great one. Kaminsky would help us a lot but he's got a low ceiling. And I'd go Devin Booker over Trey Lyles. I just don't like Lyles that much.

I would love to have Willie Cauley-Stein on the team, but i can't see him dropping down to 11, neither do i see us moving up.

I like Kaminsky, but i doubt he'll be more then Spencer Hawes in this league.

So realistically Payne would be a player we could use. But on the other hand, i think Vogel will play GHill on the PG position anyway, so is that really gonna help, i don't know

I like Lyles and Payne....I am not very high on Kaminsky. If we could trade down for multiple #1's (think Boston) I would love a combination of Jerian Grant, Kevin Looney, or Delon Wright.

I've liked Lyles from the beginning and I haven't liked Booker although I wouldn't scream if our front office turns out to like him. I like Kaminsky and think Bird will too should he fall. I was on Grant before I heard of Payne but again I wouldn't scream if we went with either of them. I wouldn't trade down unless there were lots of people we liked. I don't see the point in gambling with a lower pick if we only like one guy who the mocks have going lower. I think Bird agrees. he did take Solo in the first when we thought he was worked out as a possible second round pick.

#1 Devin Booker, I think there is a very good chance he will develop into a blend of Bradley Beam and Klay Thompson. There might be guys with higher ceilings but I don't see anyone else with as high a probability of hitting his ceiling as Booker.
#2 Trey Lyles, if Lyles works to become a more explosive athlete no telling how good he could be. Highest ceiling guy I"ve seen available at 11 in any of the mocks.
#3 Sam Dekker, remarkable combination of size, skill and athleticism for a wing player.
34 Bobby Portis, maybe a bigger version of David West? What's not to like about this?

I'm not as interested in fit as I am getting a guy who will be a good player for years to come.

I'm a bit afraid we take Kaminski and he turns into Kelly Olynyk.

1. Lyles
2. Johnson
3. Payne
4. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson

I'd like to see us get a 2nd pick in the middle of the 1st round and get Portis or Hollis-Jefferson.

This is really what we should be doing. We have needs everywhere really (for young talent at least) and it's worked in our favor to just take BPA generally. There will be one or two guys who likely drop to us that have top 5 talent. If Bird feels their head is right too, that's who we should pick.

I have always felt that the Pacers should always draft best player available. Drafting a guy to fit in, to me, is such a flawed way of drafting. If you draft the BPA and he pans out into a star, you can always change things and adjust to whatever it is you have. Having too much talent is a good problem to have. Also opens up the trade market for your team.

That said, i really like Payne. Its been reported his workout with the Pacers didnt go very well but from all ive read is he may be one of the shining players from this draft. Another guy i like is Mario Hezonja. Although, i am not sure how raw he is and how many years he'd need before he can have a impact in the NBA? Im sure the Pacers are wanting someone to help the current players.

I just cant get sold on Kaminsky and hes who i think the team has settled on. He is actually working out with us tomorrow.

This. I am not high on Kaminsky. I'd go for Lyles, the guy has the right physique and can play a bit. He has a year behind West and Scola to pick up tips and tricks from two of the best PFs in the game in the past decade.

If not Lyles than I'd like to see a trade. Call me stupid but I'd like to see Miles Plumlee back in the fold, I genuinely wonder if there is some combination of our pick for the Bucks pick plus Plumlee that will work. The Bucks are stacked in the front court as it is.
Vogel is Dutch for Bird.

I'm not sure Scola will be back, I saw a report that said he was wanting more than we would be offering, If I can get him back at $3 million or so that's great but if he's wanting $5-5.5 that might just be too much. I think Lavoy Allen might be a better signing.

if Payne shoots up the board and is gone at 11, then I think we should draft a big and let Scola go. which big probably depends on how the workouts went. We had Lyles and Portis together and now we have Kaminsky and Turner together. the mocks and rumor mill are not to be trusted as to how the workouts went.

Of all the players the Pacers have worked out so far. Turner looks to be the best by a long shot. He made Kaminsky look bad. Turner listens and understands what the coaches are telling him to do. Kaminsky was lost most of the time. When Payne was here he did not have a good workout. He didn't shoot the ball well at all and turned it over. They are trying to schedule a couple guy's they are really interested in.

When did Turner make Kaminsky look bad? You write as if you were at today's workout and perhaps you were.

I don't know how you'd know that but if it's true I would weight head to head workouts heavily. I believe the workout was closed to the public but agents might have been inside.

edit: I see the Star has posted a story about the workout so maybe it wasn't closed. however, the story doesn't read like either player was dominate. looking at DraftExpress I don't think I'd throw things at the TV if we took anyone they have in the top 20. Booker, Oubre, and Looney would be at the end of my list though and Tyus Jones would be a total shock.

edit_2: it turns out that part of the workout was open to the press. here is what Bruno had to say on 1070thefan.com:

"Scrimmaging against each other in the Pacers’ sixth pre-draft workout Sunday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and, Kaminsky got the better of things – at least in the final portion of the session open to the media. Though he had trouble getting his shot to fall, Kaminsky’s dexterity with the ball allowed him to get to the rim with ease and he seemed to pull every rebound. Turner blocked a couple of shots and hit a mid-range jumper."
