If we resign him I would basically just throw in the towel.

Honestly it would depend on the contract. New cap max for Al would be horrific. A longer cap friendly deal could be OK. Al's long term value is as a mentor for younger bigs. Once he's not the focus of the offense and is coming off the bench he's fine.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

he's a liability on defense and can be an offensive stopper. i won't be able to handle more than one more year of him.

He would be be just perfect off the bench around 20-25 min a game.
Playing against second string center. Giving easily 10-15 points a game.

Re: Fat Albatross: The Al Jefferson Thread 2.0
I'm really surprised some of you still have so much confidence in Al. He was not a good player before he came here and he was only a good player here for a few months. His body is breaking down due to not being in shape for years. It is only going to get worse. Hes had the same awful habits for a decade now. If we resign him and Clifford doesn't change his stance on where the focus of the team should be we are completely screwed and the next 3-4 seasons are going to be a complete waste unless he gets traded or injured too much to play.
Even if he gets back to his normal pre-Charlotte form that isn't a good thing or what we should be doing as a team. I don't even want him as a backup after next season. Most of the good teams in the league can make him a liability at any point in the game, so he would basically serve no purpose other than stat padding against weak and poorly coached teams and if we ever made a playoff run he would barely be able to see the court.

My bet is he slims down over the summer in order to have a good year and get one more solid contract. I do think we'll probably let him walk - if Vonleh and Cody continue to develop.

He and Biz should switch off season regiments, but I'm not holding my breath. (Assuming Al works on his skills in the offseason.)

I look forward to seeing the results of his weight loss and if it'll attribute to Al Jefferson returning to the All-NBA form of the 2013-14 season

Re: Fat Albatross: The Al Jefferson Thread 2.0
Knowing the NBA is such a copycat league, it will be interesting to see the impact of this finals series on how teams play next year. Guys like Jefferson were already dinosaurs that can't guard anyone outside of the paint. If more teams start playing small, Jefferson basically becomes unplayable.
I also wonder of Clifford will be a little less rigid about his demands of having two bigs on the floor at all times next year. Certainly he can see the value of an occasional small ball lineup with Zeller/Vonleh at the 5 and MKG at the 4.

MKG would break down playing the 4.
He's already breaking down now.
Vonleh/Biz is a great small ball front court anyway.

Re: Fat Albatross: The Al Jefferson Thread 2.0
At one point last night there were 9 guards on the floor. Draymond Green plays the 5 with near-identical measurables to MKG, the obvious exception being weight but we're talking PF here not C. Those lineups often involve Harrison freaking Barnes playing the 4. No reason he can't play it situationally.
I say that as if he has a true position aside from guarding the other team's best player and then staying out of the way on offense.

So this does mean we can trade him on or before draft day correct?

Correct. I'm surprised that no one commented before on the timing.
What makes it strange though is that what benefit did he get from definitively opting in before the draft? Seems like it only opens him up to be traded. Since I see him wanting to be traded as extremely unlikely, I think it just means he's really confident that he's not going anywhere.

I think his day to chose was today. Cho won that part of the contract making him choose in time for us to trade him if we wanted.

Was thinking the same thing. We all have hopes for him to be gone, but it seems like the organization just loves him too much. I feel like if Cho trades him, and we end up having a bad season then Cho could easily get fired.

I pray you are right. But I'm afraid Yosemite Ben is correct, the love fest between our FO and Al is palpable.

I am not saying we will trade him although I hope we do. What I am saying is he had to choose by now no matter what. I believe one of the reports said Monday was his deadline. Now what we do with that is still up in the air.
