Cap Space What If Scenarios

Post#1 » by Smitty731 » Tue Jun 16, 2015 1:44 pm

I wanted to put this out there to see what interest there is...

I get a decent amount of requests through posts, PMs and whatnot asking "What if Team X did....? Where does that leave their Cap space?" I miss some when I'm not quoted or they are buried in a thread.

I am happy to run these, but I ask that you post them in this thread. And please be reasonable. I don't want to run a bunch of stuff that involves 25 crazy moves. And, above else, have patience. I'll get to them, but it might take a bit.

My thought is post in this thread something like "If the Knicks stretched Calderon and traded Hardaway without taking back salary, where does that leave them?" I will then quote you with a response.

Does that work for all? I'm open to suggestions as well. Thanks everyone for your continued interest and support!

How much total cap space do the Hawks have if they were to waive their early bird rights/cap holds to both Carroll and Millsap? I know they would at least have enough for a max slot to make a hard push for LMA, Gasol, etc.

How much total cap space do the lakers have if they manage to deal Nick Young off for a 2nd round pick or cap space?
it would be interesting to see what we can do and if we can get something like a max, or more

How much cap space would the Sixers have if they did nothing. Oh wait, nevermind.

If the Hawks were to renounce both Carroll and Millsap, they would have $23,125,886.00 in Cap space by my projection. This has them keeping Muscalaa and giving a QO to Antic, but waiving/renouncing Ayon, Brand, Daye and Jenkins.

Definitely enough to make a Max offer to Aldridge or Gasol. Both of them fall in the 7-9 Veteran status and their Max contract will likely start at just over 20 million dollars.

If the Lakers could deal Nick Young without taking on any additional salary they would have $26,309,489.00 in Cap Space, per my projection. This includes dropping Black, Blue, Boozer, Brown, Hill, Lin and Price as well.

That figure would be enough to offer any FA a Max contract. The Max amount for a 10+ year Veteran is likely to be around 23 million dollars or so. If you were to add back Black or Brown (as some Laker fans have suggested) the number drops down to around 21 million or so.

Do cap holds apply to trades?

For example, let's say Portland resigns Aldridge in July for a contract with the first year at $19,000,000. And let's say Afflalo opts out. Would Portland be able to make a lopsided trade of Batum for a player like Melo, who makes roughly double what Batum makes? Or would they first need to renounce Matthews and Lopez to clear the cap holds?

I'll take your answer off the air. Thanks.

Cap Holds can't be traded, but they do count as part of the team salary when figuring out if a trade works or not.

If they were attempting to use Cap space to bring in Carmelo Anthony, they would have to renounce Matthews and Lopez. If they were to put Batum together with some other pieces to match salary, they wouldn't have to renounce anyone. Does that make sense?

Edit - And welcome to the boards!

F it, this came up in the other thread, and I've asked before, but....assume a 90 mil cap in 2016.

OKC with Kanter at 12 mil per year, the rest of the roster the same. Assume they renounce Novak and drop Waiters, any real cap space?

Two years out is tricky, but....

I assume they also renounce Jones and Lamb and Augustin in an effort to have Max space. They keep Durant's Cap Hold (obviously) and pick up TO on Adams, McGary, and Roberson and they could get to around 8 million in space. Far from exact, obviously, but something in that range is reasonable.

Kind of complicated:

Let's say Brooklyn decides to just renounce all of their free agents followed by sending Joe Johnson to Cleveland for Brendan Haywood, J.R. Smith, Joe Harris and Mike Miller.

This is followed by waiving Brendan Haywood, stretching J.R. Smith and Mike Miller retiring.

Where do they stand in terms of total salary on the books for 2015-16?
Disclaimer: Trades I post shouldn't make you stressed or angry if you disagree. If you say it's unproductive because it won't happen and we're only allowed to post deals that actually happen, it takes away 99% of trades here and the fun out of the board.

Are you assuming that Anderson, Lopez, and Young all opt out and are renounced? Let me know about that part and I will run it.

Yeah, it's a moot point with J.R. Smith opting out, but let's just say Lopez/Anderson/Young opt out and are renounced, then they make this deal. I'm just curious because if the Nets decide that A) they will not win a championship either way and B) since they will not have their draft pick whether it is 1st overall or 30th overall, it doesn't matter if they rebuild... then wouldn't it make sense to save tons of money instead of getting an 7 or 8 seed to save face by giving up a 15th or 16th overall draft pick instead of a top five pick if they don't have the pick either way?

Being a 7th or 8th seed and playing in the playoffs and playing meaningful games in April has some serious monetary implications as well.

In this scenario, now, it would basically be just swapping Johnson for Harris for the Nets. All the other salaries would come off the books. But, as you said, with Smith more or less saying he is opting out, the Cavs can't match salary.
