Anyone else see this? Is it a moot point wouldnt the bulls match any offer he gets? Is there anyway the Lakers can offer a shorter deal where the bulls wouldnt match I havent been able to find anything on that.

Re: Jimmy Butler Yahoo Sports
The Bulls have no reason not to match any offer butler signs. if the Bulls offer him a max qualifying offer of 5 yrs max money, it would force any offer sheet to be a guaranteed 3 years with no options making his earliest yr of free agency 2018. It's basically all in the Bulls hands.

Im sure shorter contract makes it that much easier for chi to match in case Butler plays decline after the signing

See, this is where the salary structure sucks in the NBA. The Lakers should offer Jimmy Butler a 1 year, 30 mill deal... or however much they have available. Why is he capped out? The Lakers would be paying more money to secure his rights. This is Lebron's issue with the collective bargaining... he should be making 50 mill a year.

Re: Jimmy Butler Yahoo Sports
This is probably an intentional leak by the agents to entice some FO with nothing to lose. Mitch probably won't offer that because he knows the Bulls will match. Some other team will make that offer and the Bulls will obviously match despite a request from Butler not to match. Then when the Bulls do match, Butler with either say he understands the Business and is glad to be back or outright say that he didn't want to leave but had to do what's best for his family.

Doesn't matter what he wants. Gordon Hayward and Eric Gordon wanted to be Hornets and Suns after being wined and dined by those teams, but the Jazz and Pelicans didnt give a ****. Same will happen to Butler short of taking a QO for one year ala Greg Monroe. This rfa stuff is also why this league will never see a franchise tag

To me it's a horrible strategy on Butler's agent's part, a shorter deal easily give the Bulls a chance to back hand anybody coming their way. JB may have to do what Monroe just did and take the QO, this way he becomes his own man. To me the league needs to do away with restricted free agency, it's handcuffing some guys that want to leave teams earlier in their careers...especially when they're in bad situations like Monroe was.

just too dang dangerous to get our money tied up in rfa's who's teams are willing and able to pay big dough for them. You get that tied up and you are out of the running for every FA you wanted with nothing to show at the end.

I think Butler's situation is similar to Bledsoe last year which may not be as deeply rooted as Monroe's situation.
Anyway, I think its tough for teams to let go of restricted free agency. You spend all that time trying to groom the young player only to have him leave. With restricted free agency, you do your best to groom him throughout the 2-4 years. Without it, you find yourself in a situation wherein you may even restrict playing time to lessen a player's value. The QO is a fair deal already and should be treated as a 5th year for players who really want to go to another team.

its only 3 days....if we're not getting any interest or signs of it from non restricted FA, what could it hurt to shoot an offer his way?

Re: Jimmy Butler Yahoo Sports
Yeah I don't really think JB genuinely wants to be a Laker. Just using us as leverage to get CHI to bite on a deal he wants. Fact is, he wants to secure his future while he is at his top form, he wants to get paid. If for some miracle he ends up with us, I'd say offseason job well done. but i seriously doubt it. lol.

If no top unrestricted FA targets agree to a deal with us prior to the end of the moratorium, then I'd be ok with offering Butler what he wants.
3 days is huge. Last year was an anomaly because Melo couldn't make up his damn mind and everyone else was waiting for him. Any other year, top free agents would have had a destination on the first day of signing. If we commit to waiting for 3 days, everyone else that we want may have already signed before the Bulls decide to match.

What I wish he could do was take a 2 year max with an opt out after 1 so he can control where he can be traded and give them pause

This might be a dumb question but how does restricted free agency work if one team offers 5 yrs 90 mill and the other offers 3 yrs 50 mill? The second is more favorable and desirable for the player... This is diffrent than the same contract amount from 2 different teams.

Re: Jimmy Butler Yahoo Sports
Length of deal matters a lot now b/c of the tv deal money/cap spike. Take 50M now and reup in 3 years for a huge payday or take a 5 year deal now and be out of your prime and probably never maximize those earnings.
