Fox Sports- Lakers possibly interested on Jennings

Post#1 » by MotownMadness » Tue Jun 16, 2015 10:19 pm

The Los Angeles Lakers want to compete again, and they want to do it soon.
The free agent market has some goodies this summer, but L.A. will also be looking for upgrades via trade. According to Bleacher Report's Kevin Ding, that could mean Detroit Pistons point guard Brandon Jennings leaving the Motor City for Hollywood.
If the Lakers were to target Jennings and get Stan Van Gundy on the phone, they might find a very willing partner. Van Gundy brought in Reggie Jackson midseason and it's expected that he'll re-sign with the Pistons as their point guard of the future. This means a less than guaranteed future between Jennings and the Pistons.
Check back for more info as this possibility unfolds.

No real good details but interesting non the less.

I just looked at their roster and they really don't have anyone we could use. Unless they're offering a future 1st for Jennings, I'd probably rather hang on to him. Especially since Dinwiddie probably isn't ready to be our primary backup yet.

Hmm. I would do it for sure if we get something decent in return.

Actually, I might trade Jennings to the Lakers for a future 1st and Robert Sacre (3rd string Center) if the Pistons went after Jeremy Lin. He could probably be had for relatively cheap (18-21mil for 3 years?) and would be a solid backup PG.

What about Jordan hill and a future 1st round pick? he could be a solid backup center.

I wouldn't be opposed to that. And quality centers definitely cost more than any other position, but I feel like we could find a better backup C for less than 9mil next season. Maybe I'm just crazy though.

If this happens, I think it will be for Jordan Hill straight up.

Jennings for Hill would solidify our big man rotation

Ilyasova / Tolliver
Drummond / Hill

Not great, but not terrible

We can get a cheap veteran PG but we wont be able to find a cheap back up C to play quality minutes

Lakers wont trade a pick for an expiring deal but getting Hill for Jennings straight up still works out for us especially since he will play extra hard in a contract year and would be perfect to spell Drummond during foul trouble

I'd trade him for the Lakers 2nd rounder and a $8M TPE.

I honestly don't find anything that the Lakers would make available attractive.
I'd rather see how the draft plays out before anymore trades.

I really like the possibility of Jennings coming off the bench as a 6th man, if he can get back healthy. I really think that might be his perfect position in the NBA. I trust whatever SVG does so far, lol.

Jordan Hill and a 1st round pick sounds nice. We could hold him until next seasons trade deadline but that's a risk, if he plays bad next season from coming back from injury or unhappy about playing off the bench or him not used to playing off the bench, then his trade value goes down.

Jennings is gone either from a trade or free agency either way. I don't want this to be another Monroe situation where we lose him for nothing.

So we might want to trade him before the season starts.

I'd pull the trigger on a Jennings for Hill and the Lakers' 2nd rounder. even through I'm not entirely convinced hill is a very good fit for us at either frontcourt spot, he's a capable big that gives us the extra body we desperately need. Ed Davis would honestly be a better fit for us at the backup center, but I'm not sure that's a deal that's even possibly seeing as how he's opting out on a player option.

I'd then package our two early 2nd rounders to move into the mid-to-late 1st round and target Harrell. In a league that's rapidly downsizing, I think he'd be a great backup to Drummond eventually. Initially, he could play sparingly and serve as a defensive specialist/energy guy until he's ready to handle a larger role.

Don't they have another 1st rounder in this Draft? If so I would do Jennings and 38 for I believe the 19th pick or something.

I'd guess they are interested in taking a flyer on him, not giving up anything of considerable value.

I think our best play is to hold onto him, hope he's productive for us, and that means that either he gives us a better bench than we've had in a while, or becomes trade bait for something substantial.

Moving him now is the wrong decision IMO.

That largely depends on how he recovers next season. You could either be selling high or low on him.

I'm with you, though. Jennings isn't going to net anything that will significantly alter this team's fortunes. The better bet would be to see if he can recover to 80% of who he was and try to sell at the deadline. Assuming Detroit comes to terms with RJ.

I don't think there's any way his value is lower now that it could possibly be. Right now his value is probably that of an expiring contract- a contract that won't be any less expiring if he ends up stinking on ice.

I think his value has nowhere (or very little where) to go but up from here.

If Detroit could get a deal like Kilo mentioned with a 2nd round pick and a traded player exception in return I would definitely want them to take it. My biggest reason being that I don't think Jennings does a whole lot on the court this year. An Achilles injury is something that's really tough to come back from in any sport and especially so in basketball. Taking over a year just to start moving around decently isn't unheard of at all. That timeframe would place him in late January only a couple of weeks before the trade deadline. If that ends up being the case it isn't enough time for him to regain much value.

The Lakers are probably thinking more along the lines of dumping Nick Young on Detroit for Jennings though and that's a solid no for me. I would want the Pistons to trade Brandon if they could get something remotely useful but I don't think Swaggy P fits that description.
