Now, hear me out... We are all aware of his defensive shortcomings. However, the guy is very skilled. He can score efficiently from lots of spots, pass the ball, rebound, gives effort every night and is extremely high energy.

If we can get him without biting into our cap space too much, I'd much rather have him than all of the other FAs we have been talking about in the 10 mill range.

For instance, a trade of:

David Lee

for

Trade exception
Calderon
Throw-ins

Does not cost us a ton against the cap. It also give Golden State some extra cash to resign Green while providing a decent backup ball handler for Curry.

What do you think?

adding an additional 8 million dollars isn't costing us a ton against the cap????

I know GS woudn't do this because they whole point of shedding Lee is to pay Green and not be in luxury tax hell, but if Knicks pick up Larkin's option, they could spend ALL their cap space, and then trade Calderon, Hardaway and Larkin for Lee straight up.

Works under the non-taxpayer trade rules (150%), which the Knicks would not be even after taking $5m+ in salary with the trade.

So they could spend $27m, use the room exception and THEN flip those three for Lee, but again, I don't think GS does that to only save $5m.

4. Rodney Stuckey, SG

Where's Terrance Jones on this list? Isn't he a RFA? Make HOU decide if theyre going to keep Jsmoove or keep Jones. 3 yrs 20 Mik should shake him loose and get our starting PF. Him and Koufus. Add that to Melo and Mudiay.

Could have a way worse summer

On the Lee thing:

Unless they take back Calderon, I pass easily. we don't have enough room for 2 max contracts, and taking on Lee means we can no longer offer anyone a max deal. Even such, I dont think I would even do it if it went. GS has zero leverage here too, they have a gigantic luxury tax bill incoming if they keep Lee on the roster.

It would be a hilarious poison pill for us to offer Draymond Green a max contract and deny them trade talks for Lee at the last moment.

2015 pick (or 2016pick) + Lee for Calderon.

It removes our ability to pivot in the offseason. We cant pivot to Khris Middleton, Tobias Harris, etc.

According to Tim MacMahon of ESPN Dallas has told Monta that if he opts out of his $8.7mil---he won't be getting a raise from them.
Monta is a one way undersized 2 guard. but he is a legit #2 on a playoff team in the east. if Butler , Middleton are off the table Monta would make a good robin to Melo's batman.
However, he will be 30 before this coming season starts, and there might be a bidding war with Boston.

NY Trades : #4 (Porzingis), Jose Calderon, Tim Hardaway Jr. and the rights to a 2018 Lotto-Protected 1st pick swap (us/Philly)
NY Receives : #3 (D'Angelo Russell), Ben Gordon (non-guaranteed) and #51

PHI Trades : #3 (D'Angelo Russell)
PHI Receives : #5 (Emmanuel Mudiay), Tim Hardaway Jr, Mo Harkless and the rights to a 2018 Lotto-Protected 1st (NY) pick swap

ORL Trades : #5 (Emmanuel Mudiay), Ben Gordon (non-guaranteed), Mo Harkless and #51
ORL Receives : #4 (Kristaps Porzingis) and Jose Calderon

WHY FOR PHILLY? - If Russell is Phil's guy, he's likely going to have to move up to select him. Hinkie takes no prisoners, and if he knows Phil will pay, he will play. Now whether or not Hinkie wants Russell for himself is a debate all to its own. I mean, everyone and their mother has Russ being picked by Philly because of the fit. But who knows? He may even value Mudiay over Russell to begin with. Even if he compares them as similar level prospects, this may be a deal that entices him to roll the dice.

WHY FOR NY? - Phil get's his guy. Russell is a much better fit in the Triangle than Mudiay, and Porzingis may be a little further away from contributing than the others. My NY fans aren't going to be happy to hear of the pick swap, but if it's Lotto-protected, and Phil rights this ship in Free Agency, that swap may never happen in the future. Its a calculated risk. It becomes even more worth it when you factor in shedding Calderon's contract, which opens up just about 2 Max cap slots. THjr is a decent SG prospect, but nothing we lose sleep over. This is Phil's version of going "all-in".

WHY FOR ORLANDO - Porzingis hype is crazy, and they just may have been bitten by the bug. A young up and coming roster with 2 penetrating guards in the backcourt, could certainly use some spacing in the frontcourt. Porzingis projects to be a very good stretch 4, who would also be a nice look alongside their young low-post Center in Vucevic. Mudiay isn't a fit here with the very promising Payton already in tow. Calderon would be a nice mentor for him. With Frye's signing last off-season, you can see Hennigan is trying to put the right vet pieces around his young core to accelerate the development curve. And I'm sure Skiles, who loved Ridnour, would love a vet PG who doesn't turn the ball over.

I would draft Mudiay, offer the max to Deandre, give the rest of the cap space to Carroll.

Mudiay
Calderon
Carroll
Melo
Jordan

Similar to the 54 win 2012-13 team

Neither would net you a late 2015 pick. Teams looking to trade out of that spot are looking to get out of guaranteed contracts.....not ideal for an old broken, heavy two year deal PG or a trigger happy SG, as those guys can literally be found throughout the draft. THJr might net a 2nd round pick because he's cheap.....but teams always value potential and unknown.

Nice, but I'd start Galloway over Calderon. Very nice defensive team.

We'd need a 3rd team involved to even out the salaries in any type of D-Lee trade is that accurate?

Looking at the players we can trade (leaving out Galloway) I've got Calderon, Hardawy, Early and Larkin they only tally $10.5M combined and Lee has a $15.0M deal. Delta gets worse if you starting adding in an Ezeli or say a H-Barnes.

No.

Knicks have cap space. They can aborg up to 150% of $33m dollars if Calderon is being moved.

Matching is only for teams over the cap.

So we can do Jose for Lee straight up and then figure out what picks come our way?

Might as well hope to sign LeBron to a veteran minimum contract. The chances are about the same.

How about

Mudiay
Monta
Melo
Taj Gibson(Calderon + Tim Hardaway trade) or Brandon Bass
Robin Lopez

Seems like a solid team on defense and offense that is reasonably attainable.
