I don't know what to do with myself after Game of Thrones ends...

This is a pretty bold claim, but I think it is the best TV series I've ever seen. Nothing will ever surpass Twin Peaks as my favorite series, but objectively speaking of pure quality, I think it doesn't get better than GoT.

Yes, start watching it immediately. You don't even necessarily have to be a fan of fantasy. Its basically a political drama set in a fantasy setting, but the fantasy stuff is relatively subtle, especially in the beginning.

Have you seen The Americans (FX Networks)?

Bill Simmons might be getting a show on HBO. That actually seems like the perfect place for him.

Lol no. I know that a hell lot of people don't know about the best show on TV entitled The Americans. The third season ended last April.

Rape of Thrones is entertaining, sure, but to say that it is the best show on TV in terms of quality is a reach, IMO.

I had heard about this too. Is it the one where the plot is about a rookie who doesn't speak English and a translator who doesn't know anything about basketball?

I don't know if I'll ever get to it. From what I understand it's a whole lot more about the overall GoT world and the way the writer wants to manipulate with it than characters themselves. They almost aren't characters, moreso they are plot devices. That scares me off and makes it sound like a series that I wouldn't like. Not to mention the fact that I usually have to spend considerable amount of time to buy in this whole fantasy world that the creators are offering me (re: my post in the OT thread yesterday about films of "chosen ones who are destined to save the world and humanity from some evil dudes).

Obviously, I haven't seen anything from one of the candidates for best series ever in Game of Thrones but I think I've seen the majority of the rest. And The Wire stands out as the best TV series to me. I'm obsessed with it, just wrote a thesis on it in university. Still thinking whether I'll continue developing it into my bachelor's thesis.

The Wire is a god-tier show imo.

The fantasy elements in GoT are pretty light and not at all jarring. Its not like Lord of The rings or something where there are different creatures and magic going on all over the place. The world is basically a kind of traditional medieval'ish feudalistic setup, and things like the magic are more like what we view as the occult/mysticism/religion, but with real tangible power, and the line between folklore/mythology and reality is blurred. For instance, the civilized world in the universe of game of thrones doesn't even believe in magic or most things fantasy related.

Either way, if you aren't particular fond of fantasy you could certainly do without it, but that isn't to say that you might still not like it.

I don't know how to call it in English or whether you have anything like that in USA. But it was my "closing paper", the thesis I had to write at the end of your first year in university (I just finished my sophomore year, yet this was one of my many debts that I hadn't done in year 1).

Well.. I hope you wouldn't have hated my paper. I compared The Wire, mainly McNulty as a character and the way they close out their season narratives, with the conventions of police TV series. Looked in the history of it, researched theory of police series and proved how The Wire differs from most police series, inspired by David Simon's quote of "It looks like a cop show. But actually we tried to mask something within that cop show."

And I also dedicated a part of the paper to how unique their soundtrack is. The way they don't use any music to send a message to the viewer. How sound is usually used to help the viewer, yet in the case of The Wire only serves the role of creating a realistic world and in some cases actually (by dialogue) creates difficulties for the viewer to understand the series.

To date, we have never seen a TV show with the production quality, budget and scale as Game of Thrones. That alone makes it pretty awesome. The depth of the history in the world they created is, to me, the most impressive part of the show along with the amazing production quality. Its not my favorite show of all-time but its definitely near the top.

The Wire
Spartacus
Breaking Bad
Hell on Wheels
Game of Thrones
Mad Men

The next tier: Walking Dead, Fargo, True Detective, Sorpranos, Six Feet Under, Friday Night Lights, Deadwood, Battlestar Galatica

Shows that were great for a time, but fizzled out at the end (or I stopped watching): Sons of Anarchy, True Blood, Prison Break, Shameless, Homeland, Weeds

That's probably my top 6 as of right now, but still so many shows I've yet to watch, like the Americans and Twin Peaks. Now that basketball is over I can dedicate some time this summer on catching up on some shows.

Based on season one, Better Call Saul will be near the top by the time its over.

You should watch Black Sails fatlever. It starts off slow in the first season, but towards the end and through the entire 2nd season it's some of best TV you'll ever see. I cannot wait for the 3rd season to start. I enjoyed the 2nd season more than anything I've watched since Breaking Bad.

Yes, it's about Pirates that actually existed.

edit: well, it's a mix of fictional pirates and actual pirates that lived I should say.

I enjoyed Spartacus but could not rank it along side breaking bad or the wire. I guess I just didn't take it as serious.

I was discussing Mad Men with the wife the other day, we both enjoyed it, but when I asked her why it was good, she couldn't answer.
either could I, its a show that's good but it felt like nothing explosive happened, nothing stood out and I couldn't tell you why its enjoyable. it just was.
